The 2026 Ram 1500 Big Horn and 2026 Ford F-150 XLT can become very different trucks as options are added. For a Canadian buyer, the first useful comparison is what comes with the starting specification—and what must be purchased separately. In this pair, the standard engines and the treatment of adaptive cruise control are more informative than a broad claim that one mid-level trim is better equipped.
Specifications were checked October 30, 2026. This is researched buying guidance, not a road test. It does not substitute a Big Horn Night Edition or a heavily optioned XLT for the basic trim.
Standard engines before optional powertrains
Big Horn starts with a 305-hp, 269-lb-ft 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 and an eight-speed automatic. Ram offers other engines, including the standard-output Hurricane and the returning 5.7-litre HEMI, subject to the Canadian configuration. XLT’s standard 2.7-litre EcoBoost V6 produces 325 hp and 400 lb-ft and uses a ten-speed automatic. Ford lists larger gasoline engines and the PowerBoost full hybrid as alternatives. Source: Ford Canada’s 2026 XLT specifications.
The standard Ford has higher published output, especially torque. That does not tell you which configured truck can tow your trailer, or which optional engine is worth its price. A Ram with an upgraded engine should be compared as that specific build, not credited with optional output while retaining the V6 price.
If the Ford hybrid is attractive, start with the job it needs to do: supplying electrical power, covering your daily route or reducing fuel use. A hybrid is not automatically the cheapest option. Compare its purchase price and the fuel rating for the exact configuration before estimating a saving.
Included assistance versus optional convenience

Ford lists adaptive cruise as optional on XLT. Its standard equipment includes a 12-inch SYNC 4 centre touchscreen, a separate 12-inch instrument display, cloth 40/20/40 front seating and single-zone manual climate control. Heated seats and dual-zone climate are optional. Source: Ford Canada’s 2026 XLT specifications.
For either truck, a quote should identify the equipment group that supplies the features you need. Adaptive cruise and heated seats are worth checking separately: seeing them on one Big Horn or XLT does not make them standard on every version.
Try the interfaces while parked: connect a phone, find navigation, adjust the display and locate the assistance controls. Ask about operating limitations and any subscription-dependent connected functions. An assistance system still requires the driver to follow its instructions and remain responsible for the vehicle.
The optional power outlet can be a real differentiator
Ford offers Pro Power Onboard configurations, with up to 7.2 kW available with PowerBoost. This is optional capability, not equipment on every XLT. Source: Ford Canada’s 2026 XLT specifications.
If portable electrical power matters to your work or recreation, list the devices, their running loads and starting demands, then have the dealer explain the applicable outlet configuration and operating instructions. Do not assume every device can be powered. Ford’s 2026 F-150 manual prohibits connecting the 2.4-kW or 7.2-kW vehicle power outlets to premises or the main electrical supply. Use the generator only outdoors: the gasoline engine can start automatically and emits carbon monoxide. Ford owner’s manual, page 218.
If you would rarely use it, do not let a distinctive optional feature drive the entire purchase. Compare the truck you actually need, including its purchase and operating costs.
Match the cabin and working load
For family use, compare the intended Crew Cab/SuperCrew configurations with similar bed needs and driven wheels. For work use, specify the number of regular occupants and the longest item that must fit with the tailgate closed. Test the rear seating with the driver’s seat set correctly, and include any child restraints under the relevant installation instructions.
Before towing, obtain each exact vehicle’s loading label and configuration-specific trailer rating. People, accessories, bed cargo and trailer tongue load all matter. Do not turn a model-family maximum into a rating for a particular Big Horn or XLT, and do not assume the presence of a hitch settles the brake-controller or other equipment requirements.
A quote should make the differences visible
Request current Canadian quotes naming the engine, cab, bed, drivetrain and equipment groups. Separate required options from appearance packages, show freight and fees, and confirm which discounts apply to your payment method. Compare financing totals as well as monthly payments.
The final price and fuel bill depend on the engine, cab, drivetrain and options you choose. Compare the EnerGuide ratings for those exact configurations, then add insurance and tire costs to the ownership budget. A rating for another engine or drivetrain is not a reliable shortcut.
The practical choice
Start with Big Horn if its listed assistance equipment and chosen cabin meet your needs without costly additions. Start with XLT if its standard EcoBoost output, digital displays or a genuinely useful optional power setup justify the complete quote. The better mid-trim is the one whose actual build fits your requirements—not the one with the most options available somewhere in the range.
