The 2027 BMW X5 40 xDrive and Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 4MATIC both pair a turbocharged six-cylinder engine with mild-hybrid assistance, but the most useful buying differences sit around the occupants. BMW’s new generation uses a windshield-wide information concept and five-seat layout. Mercedes’ updated GLE emphasizes a three-display dashboard and offers an additional seating row. These are two distinct cabin approaches, not just competing engine figures.
This is a Canadian specification-based comparison of the new 2027 models. BMW Canada announced an October 2026 rollout for the X5 40 xDrive. Mercedes Canada describes the refreshed GLE arriving during 2026, but its detailed current-model pages still cover 2026. Confirm final Canadian packages and local delivery before ordering; this article does not transfer the outgoing vehicles’ equipment into the new model year.
Two ways to organize the information in front of you
BMW’s Canadian X5 page describes Panoramic Vision across the windshield area, a central display and a standard 3D head-up display. Its separate front-passenger display is optional. Mercedes’ preview lists a standard MBUX Superscreen comprising three 12.3-inch displays, with an augmented-reality head-up display available separately.
The right comparison is a sequence of normal tasks, not a total number of screens. While parked, enter a destination, change the ventilation, select a familiar audio source and locate the information you will need during a drive. Check the layout from your adjusted seating position, including how it works with your normal eyewear. Do not assume an unfamiliar interface is better simply because it looks newer.
If the front passenger frequently manages music or navigation, let that person try the controls too. Ask which functions can be used while moving, which require a data connection and which depend on a paid service. A feature demonstrated on a connected showroom car may involve an ownership commitment that belongs in the purchasing discussion.
Five seats versus an optional extra row
BMW identifies the new X5 as a five-seat SUV. Mercedes lists optional power-adjustable second- and third-row seats for the GLE SUV. This gives the GLE a configuration worth investigating if six or seven occupants are part of your regular use, but the option must appear on the actual order.
Do not let a premium interior distract from the seating requirement. Test entry and exit with the people who will occupy the rear, and check the remaining luggage area with the necessary seats upright. If five places are enough, assess second-row space and cargo access without giving unused extra seats an automatic advantage. Neither brochure establishes comfort for your passengers.
Air suspension remains an equipment choice
BMW’s Canadian launch release identifies standard adaptive suspension and optional two-axle air suspension. Mercedes describes AIRMATIC as available on the updated GLE. Both manufacturers offer a standard panoramic roof, but that shared feature does not make their suspension specifications interchangeable.
Record the suspension and wheel setup of every demonstrator. If you test an air-suspension vehicle but order another configuration, the result is not a direct assessment of your intended purchase. Try the same imperfect road, parking entrance and normal cruising route where practical. This article does not claim that either design is smoother, quieter or more capable from specifications alone.
Engines and hybrid systems
The X5 40 xDrive uses a 3.0-litre turbo inline-six with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology. The GLE 450 preview specifies a 3.0-litre inline-six with an electric auxiliary compressor and integrated starter-generator. Both are AWD gasoline models; neither is the plug-in or fully electric alternative in its manufacturer’s expanding range.
Mild-hybrid assistance is not evidence of a meaningful electric-only commuting range. Nor should separate engine and starter-generator peaks be added into a homemade total. Evaluate low-speed response and braking during a proper test drive, then use the final Canadian consumption figures when available rather than estimating running costs from the hybrid label.
Which deserves the first appointment?
Begin with the X5 if five seats suit your life and you want to try its new information layout. Begin with the GLE if its extra seating option or standard passenger-display arrangement addresses a real need. Obtain complete, equipment-matched written offers and confirm delivery before deciding. Published towing headlines and preliminary acceleration estimates are intentionally not used to declare a winner here.
Separate a confirmed vehicle specification from a forthcoming cabin preview. The vehicle quote and total-cost guide provides a written framework for that comparison.
