Engine and transmission
The hybrid uses a 2.5-litre four-cylinder, electric assistance, an e-CVT and a rear electric motor for AWD. Total system output is 243 hp. Its published towing limit is 3,500 pounds, subject to equipment and loading. Toyota Canada’s 2023 announcement.
Do not confuse this with the gas Highlander or use the gas version’s towing figure when selecting a trailer. Ask for the actual vehicle’s towing instructions and labels, including how passengers, luggage and tongue weight affect the load you can carry.
Interior and seating
The Canadian Hybrid XLE seats eight. Compared with LE, it adds a moonroof, heated steering wheel, SofTex upholstery, powered passenger seat and wireless charging. Limited changes to seven seats and adds leather, ventilated front seats, larger displays, JBL audio and a panoramic roof. Canadian grade differences.
That seating change is a reason to compare the grades in person. An extra seat may be more useful than a longer equipment list. Install your own child seats and test access to the third row with the second row occupied; the best arrangement is the one that works with your passengers, not merely the highest trim.
Cargo and daily use
Try the luggage area with all seats you need raised. Bring the stroller, sports equipment or shopping bags that normally travel with you. Check liftgate access where you park and whether each driver can reach the controls comfortably. These checks answer questions that a maximum cargo figure cannot.
Fuel economy
NRCan’s 2023 Highlander Hybrid AWD entry, applicable here rather than its separate Limited/Platinum entry, lists 6.7 L/100 km city, 6.8 highway and 6.7 combined on regular gasoline. Actual consumption varies with conditions. NRCan historical data.
At 20,000 km annually, the combined figure represents 1,340 litres. Use your own distance and fuel-price assumptions for a budget, and allow for winter, short trips, idling and loading. A calculation from a laboratory rating should not be treated as a promised annual bill.
Canadian trim comparison
Current Canadian manufacturer pricing for these exact 2023 configurations has not been verified as of October 31, 2026. Vehicle prices, fee amounts and price differences are omitted; the table compares equipment only.
| Grade | What the change buys |
|---|---|
| Hybrid LE | 8-seat starting point |
| Hybrid XLE | Moonroof, heated steering wheel, SofTex, power passenger seat and wireless charging |
| Hybrid Limited | Leather, front ventilation, JBL, panoramic roof, larger displays and 7 seats |
| Hybrid Platinum | Heated second row, head-up display and surround-view monitor |
Which version makes sense?
Choose XLE because its equipment and seating meet your needs, not merely because it sits between two prices. Consider LE if the additions are unnecessary; look at Limited or Platinum only after confirming that their seating arrangement still works. On used examples, compare condition and history before attaching a value to the badge.
