The 2027 BMW X1 xDrive28i and 2026 Mercedes-Benz GLA 250 4MATIC offer different answers to the small luxury SUV question. The BMW has the stronger published engine output, while the Mercedes fits into a shorter, narrower footprint. For an urban buyer, the meaningful decision may be whether the cabin, parking space and equipment package work together—not which badge has the more impressive reputation.
This Canadian comparison uses a 2027 X1 with Premium Essential Package, supported by a Canadian inventory configuration, and the documented Canadian 2026 GLA. Exact Canadian 2027 GLA equipment was not established, so it is not assumed unchanged. The X1 example’s separately listed Driving Assistance Plus is an option, not a promise about every Premium Essential build. No personal driving impressions are claimed.
Measure the parking space before the showroom visit
The BMW Canada specification gives the X1 a length of 4,500 mm and mirror-to-mirror width of 2,104 mm. The Canadian GLA 250 page lists 4,412 mm and 2,020 mm respectively. That makes the Mercedes 88 mm shorter and 84 mm narrower across the mirrors on these published dimensions.
Those differences are not dramatic on an open road, but they can matter beside a pillar or in a narrow garage. Measure the opening and the usable space with stored items in place. Then consider room to open the driver’s door and reach a child seat. A vehicle fitting between two walls does not necessarily mean the family can comfortably use it there.
Do not translate the smaller exterior directly into a rear-seat verdict. Front-seat adjustment, the shape of the seatback and the position of a child seat can change the result. Bring regular passengers and set the front seats realistically before judging the second row. Check visibility when reversing as well as the camera image.
More power, but no automatic economy verdict
BMW lists 241 horsepower and 295 lb-ft from its gasoline four-cylinder, with AWD and a seven-speed automatic. Mercedes lists 221 horsepower and 258 lb-ft from its turbocharged mild-hybrid four-cylinder, an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic and 4MATIC AWD. The BMW has the higher published output on both measures, but a test drive is still needed to judge response and low-speed smoothness.
The GLA’s mild-hybrid label is not a promise of plug-in-style electric commuting. Its cited Canadian page leaves city and highway fuel figures as TBD, so this guide does not manufacture an annual savings estimate. Ask for the applicable fuel label and compare the same annual distance and fuel price before treating one as less expensive to run.
The equipment comparison begins with the package sheet
BMW Canada’s package description identifies Harman Kardon audio, a heated steering wheel and a panoramic glass sunroof in Premium Essential. Those are selected-package features here, not an assertion about an unoptioned X1. The Canadian inventory example also lists perforated Veganza upholstery and separately specified front active seats.
Mercedes includes a panoramic roof, heated steering wheel, heated power front seats with memory and ARTICO upholstery in the cited GLA specification. Leather is optional. Neither Veganza nor ARTICO should be described as leather merely because the vehicle is a luxury model. Judge the comfort first, then decide whether a different material is worth the extra cost.
Assistance equipment needs its own line on the quote. The GLA lists DISTRONIC adaptive cruise and a 360-degree camera as optional. The selected BMW’s Driving Assistance Plus with Stop and Go likewise needs to be confirmed on the purchased build. A parking-assistance label does not by itself establish adaptive cruise, and a rear camera is not the same as a surrounding view.
Have the retailer demonstrate the exact functions while explaining their limits. Decide whether following-distance assistance, camera coverage or an upgraded audio system is the genuine priority. It is easier to compare two tailored equipment lists than to discover later that the better-looking monthly payment omitted something you expected.
Choose the version that fits your daily routine
Try the GLA first if parking clearance is tight and its included comfort features cover your needs. Try the X1 first if the higher published output and Premium Essential equipment appeal more. Check the rear seats and load the normal bags in both; no cargo winner is declared from differently presented litre figures.
Finish with written Canadian quotes for the actual vehicles, including installed packages, freight, fees and taxes. Keep the mixed model years explicit and verify each vehicle’s delivery status rather than assuming an online listing guarantees immediate availability. The right comparison is between the two configurations you can actually buy.
Once the X1 and GLA fit your parking space, compare the precise assistance and cabin packages on their quotations. The written quote checklist helps separate those choices from financing and trade-in amounts.
