The 2027 Ford Expedition Active and Nissan Armada SL offer two different routes into an eight-seat, body-on-frame SUV. Ford’s basic specification puts a useful trailer-control package and unusual tailgate arrangement ahead of plush upholstery. Nissan supplies a richer cabin specification, but its SL trim still leaves an important towing component off the standard-equipment list.
This Canadian specification comparison covers the regular-length 2027 Expedition Active 200A 4×4 and 2027 Armada SL 4WD—not Expedition MAX, an upgraded Ford 202A build or an Armada PRO-4X. Official 2027 Canadian information is available for both. Nissan’s September 17 announcement says sales begin later in fall 2026; confirm local arrival and exact stock before treating either specification as an available vehicle. This is not a back-to-back driving review.
Start with what is actually standard
Ford lists eight cloth seats, powered front seats, a power-folding third row, 18-inch wheels, a 3.5-litre EcoBoost engine and ten-speed automatic. The Active has a 24-inch instrument display and 13.2-inch centre screen. Its Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package, integrated trailer brake controller and powered split tailgate are standard. ActiveX upholstery, seven-seat configuration, panoramic roof and BlueCruise are optional rather than part of a basic 200A comparison. Ford advertises up to 9,600 lb towing when properly equipped. Ford Canada’s exact 2027 Active specification.
Nissan’s SL seats eight with TailorFit appointments and heated front seats. It has a nine-speed automatic, dual 12.3-inch displays and Klipsch 12-speaker audio. Its Class IV hitch, harness and brake-controller prewiring are standard; the integrated controller is not. Maximum advertised towing is 8,500 lb, configuration dependent. SL does not inherit the higher trims’ heated second row or adaptive air suspension. Nissan Canada’s 2027 Armada trim specifications. At the time of this October 31, 2026 update, the exact SL’s current Canadian manufacturer-site price and complete fee basis remain unverified; no purchase-price advantage is claimed.
Why a brake controller matters more than a headline tow rating
A tow hitch and a brake controller are different pieces of equipment. A buyer moving a trailer with electric brakes needs to establish how those brakes will be controlled—not simply whether the SUV has a receiver. Ask a Nissan dealer to quote a compatible controller and installation for the exact trailer setup. Ask a Ford dealer to demonstrate the standard controller’s adjustments and connection checks.
The Ford’s higher advertised maximum is not permission to hitch up a 9,600-lb trailer behind any loaded Active. Passengers, bags, accessories and tongue weight can exhaust the actual vehicle’s payload allowance first. Calculate with the door-jamb label, owner’s manual and the trailer’s loaded weight, not its empty shipping weight.
This creates a practical buying distinction even for a trailer well below either headline limit: the Ford starts with more of the relevant control hardware already identified. Whether it is the better purchase still depends on a complete equipped quote and load calculation. If you do not tow, this advantage may be worth very little to you.
The tailgate deserves a real loading test
Ford’s split opening changes the way you reach the cargo area. Try loading a heavy cooler, reaching an item near the seatbacks and handling a stroller without leaning awkwardly over the lower section. What works as a convenient platform for one person may be an obstruction for another.
Compare both vehicles in the parking situation you actually use. Open the rear door fully, leave room for a person behind it and consider how an attached trailer would affect access. Do not award a cargo-space winner by combining a manufacturer’s optimized measurement with another brand’s differently measured figure.
The Armada’s cabin argument is easier to appreciate every day
Upholstery, audio and the feel of frequently touched controls matter on every school run, not only during holiday towing. Sit in each vehicle long enough to judge the driving position and bring a passenger who will regularly occupy the second row. A specification advantage is only valuable if you prefer it in use.
Make sure the demonstration vehicle matches the quote. An upgraded Ford with different seats or a higher-grade Nissan can make the base comparison misleading. For eight-person use, also check access to the third row with your child restraints installed correctly. Folding-seat demonstrations without the restraints are not the same test.
Do not carry 2026 fuel figures into a 2027 verdict
A verified, directly comparable Canadian 2027 fuel-consumption pair has not been established for this comparison. No running-cost winner is being declared from the previous model year. Obtain the exact vehicle’s Canadian fuel label and check the owner’s-manual fuel recommendation before calculating annual costs.
Likewise, peak engine output is not a substitute for loaded driving behaviour. A test drive should cover the roads, parking manoeuvres and passenger load you normally face. Neither the transmission’s gear count nor the largest display tells you whether the vehicle will feel easy to live with.
The buying decision
Start with the Expedition Active if towing equipment and the split-tailgate arrangement directly address your needs. Start with the Armada SL if the standard cabin equipment is the stronger attraction and any necessary towing additions fit the budget. Compare complete cash prices or equivalent financing terms—not one manufacturer’s MSRP against another’s fee-inclusive selling figure.
Before signing, write down the exact year, trim, equipment group, seat count, towing hardware and installed accessories. That single-page specification is more useful than a generic promise that the vehicle is fully loaded or tow-ready.
