The 2027 Subaru Crosstrek Onyx and redesigned 2027 Kia Seltos EX Premium are both small AWD SUVs, but they spend their equipment budgets differently. The Subaru’s strongest case is a route that makes ground clearance and low-speed traction controls useful. The Kia’s case is comfort equipment that passengers can appreciate on an entirely ordinary day.
This Canadian comparison uses the gasoline Crosstrek Onyx, not Hybrid Onyx, and the Seltos EX Premium AWD with its 2.0-litre engine, not a turbocharged X-Line. It is a specification-led buying guide, not a claim that these exact vehicles have been road-tested together.
The two configurations
Subaru lists 180 hp and 178 lb-ft from the gasoline Crosstrek’s 2.5-litre engine, paired with a CVT. Its 2027 engineering information identifies 220 mm of ground clearance. The published non-hybrid city/highway fuel figures are 9.0/7.1 L/100 km; a combined figure has not been verified for this article. Subaru Canada’s 2027 engineering page.
Onyx includes a ten-way power driver’s seat, dual-function X-MODE and Reverse Automatic Braking. Checked October 31, 2026, Subaru Canada’s consumer configurator lists the 2027 gasoline Onyx automatic at C$35,395 MSRP, with Nunavut selected and no added accessories. Freight/PDI, other fees, taxes, licensing, registration and insurance are additional. This is not the Hybrid Onyx price or a fee-inclusive Ontario quote.
The Kia’s Canadian 2027 brochure gives EX Premium a 147-hp, 132-lb-ft 2.0-litre engine and IVT automatic. Its equipment includes a panoramic roof, 18-inch wheels, power driver’s seat with memory and relaxation function, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats and smart power liftgate. It retains a four-inch instrument cluster; the 12.3-inch cluster belongs to X-Line. Kia lists 9.1/7.8/8.5 L/100 km city/highway/combined for this AWD powertrain. First decide who benefits from the equipment
The Kia’s seat ventilation and rear-seat heating are easy to understand as purchase reasons: they address comfort for people who use those seats. If you regularly carry rear passengers, have them try the controls and seating position. If the rear seats are normally empty, those features should receive less weight in your decision.
Try the panoramic roof’s shade and the cabin with the roof closed, not only the bright showroom view. Also test the power tailgate at a height you can reach and in a space resembling your garage. Convenience equipment is most valuable when it removes a repeated annoyance.
The driver’s relaxation function is something to demonstrate while safely parked, not a feature to experiment with while driving. Neither a powered seat nor memory settings guarantee that its cushion and backrest will suit you.
The Subaru’s route-based argument
A steep, loose-surface driveway or an uneven access road gives the Subaru’s clearance and selectable low-speed controls a concrete job. Describe the actual conditions to the dealer and ask when each mode is appropriate. That is more useful than asking which SUV is generally more adventurous.
Do not assume a badge or drive-mode name means the vehicle can negotiate every obstacle. Tires, surface conditions, approach angles and the load all matter. Extra clearance also does not establish better handling or braking on an icy paved road.
For a maintained urban commute, you may rarely call on this equipment. It remains a legitimate preference, but it should not automatically outweigh everyday seating comfort or a better purchase quote.
Do not compare AWD marketing terms as if they were identical hardware
The two manufacturers describe their traction systems differently. This article does not equate Kia’s AWD terminology with Subaru’s dual-function X-MODE, or claim either is a mechanical rear locker. Ask for the relevant operating instructions and a practical explanation of the systems’ limits.
Winter tires deserve their own budget line on both vehicles. AWD can help the vehicle move, but it is not a substitute for suitable tires or a guarantee of shorter stopping distances.
Price: use the same definition on both quotes
A current Canadian manufacturer-site price for the 2027 Seltos EX Premium AWD could not be verified as of October 31, 2026. Check Kia’s current Seltos trim information and obtain an itemized quote for the 2.0-litre EX Premium AWD, rather than relying on an earlier launch figure.
No precise purchase-price gap is quoted without a verified Kia price on the same basis. Compare written quotes in the same province, with the same treatment of freight, fees, accessories and tax. Subaru’s MSRP above must not be compared with a fee-inclusive Kia quote.
If the final gap remains modest, identify which features you would genuinely miss. A lower price is less persuasive if it leaves you paying separately for a needed accessory; a higher equipment count is less persuasive if you will not use those features.
Fuel and performance need separate judgments
Kia’s combined fuel figure is verified, while a comparable Subaru combined figure has not been established here. No annual fuel-cost winner is calculated from a guessed average. The published city/highway figures can guide questions for the dealer, but confirm the exact vehicle’s Canadian label.
The Subaru’s higher output also does not establish a measured acceleration result. Test both on a familiar hill or merge lane, with attention to response and noise rather than just peak power. Neither engine size nor transmission branding is a reliability forecast.
The verdict
Put the Crosstrek Onyx first if its clearance, traction controls and driver-assistance equipment solve a regular route problem. Put the Seltos EX Premium first if the stronger attraction is seat comfort, rear-passenger amenities and the power tailgate.
Before deciding, fit your passengers, child restraints and luggage in each vehicle and compare properly itemized quotes. The better choice is the one whose useful equipment matches your actual week—not the one with the longer brochure.
