A hybrid sedan does not need to be an all-wheel-drive, top-trim purchase. The 2027 Toyota Camry SE FWD and 2026 Hyundai Sonata Preferred-Trend Hybrid are front-wheel-drive alternatives with different priorities: the Toyota starts with a relatively straightforward equipment specification, while the Hyundai includes several comfort features that deserve attention before you move up the Camry range.
This is deliberately a mixed-year Canadian comparison. Toyota publishes the 2027 SE specification; Hyundai Canada’s verified Sonata showroom and equipment table identify 2026. The Hyundai is used as a documented current alternative, not a prediction of 2027 equipment. This is a buying guide based on specifications, not a claim that both cars have been tested together.
Keep the hybrid and drivetrain together on the quote
The 2027 Canadian Camry SE FWD specification lists 225 horsepower from its 2.5-litre hybrid system. Hyundai’s Canadian specification table identifies the Preferred-Trend Hybrid as a 192-horsepower 2.0-litre hybrid with a six-speed automatic and front-wheel drive. The Sonata’s similarly named 2.5-litre AWD model is a different powertrain, not an AWD version of this hybrid.
Toyota’s higher stated output is useful information, but it is not an acceleration test. During a drive, compare a gentle pull-away, a rolling merge and the response when the cabin is carrying your usual passengers. Pay attention to how each powertrain responds to a modest accelerator input, not just what happens during one hard acceleration.
Neither selected car needs to be plugged in. That makes this a different ownership decision from a plug-in hybrid: you are not choosing a charging routine or buying a particular electric-only commute. Fuel savings still depend on your driving and the final purchase cost. Use the applicable Canadian labels for these exact model years rather than inserting last year’s Camry figure into a spreadsheet.
The cabin equipment changes the value comparison
Camry SE lists heated mixed-fabric/SofTex front seats and a heated steering wheel. Hyundai specifies leather seating surfaces, front-seat heating and ventilation, driver seat-and-mirror memory and a heated steering wheel on this Hybrid trim. Its panoramic sunroof is also listed equipment. These are concrete reasons to inspect the Sonata even if the Toyota’s drivetrain is your initial preference.
For two regular drivers, memory can be more useful than an appearance package. Try storing both seat-and-mirror positions, then adjust the steering wheel separately for each driver. For a passenger who frequently finds a cabin too warm, test the ventilation rather than assuming the upholstery label tells the whole comfort story. A feature is valuable when someone actually uses it.
The base Camry SE rides on 16-inch alloys. Toyota offers an Upgrade package including 18-inch wheels, a moonroof and Smart Key entry; these should not be priced as if already included in the basic SE. The Sonata Hybrid has 17-inch alloys. Compare the exact Toyota package against the Hyundai quote, including replacement tire costs, instead of comparing a basic advertised price with a richly equipped demonstrator.
Bigger infotainment is not the same as a bigger instrument display
Toyota lists an 8-inch multimedia screen and 7-inch driver information display for SE. Hyundai lists a 12.3-inch audio touchscreen but a separate 4.2-inch instrument display for Preferred-Trend Hybrid. The Sonata’s wide centre screen therefore does not mean it includes the N Line’s larger digital gauge cluster or its navigation-equipped audio system.
Set up your own phone while parked and try a familiar destination, a call and an audio source change. Look at where useful information appears and whether the controls you use daily are easy to reach. Screen dimensions can narrow a shortlist, but they cannot establish which interface you will find less distracting. Check connected-service conditions separately from basic phone compatibility.
Budget the fuel and the coverage separately
Hyundai’s exact 2026 table lists 5.0 L/100 km combined for the selected Sonata Hybrid. At 20,000 km a year, that rating corresponds to 1,000 litres before allowing for your conditions and driving. Multiply by your own fuel-price assumption rather than treating that volume as a dollar bill. This is a Sonata budgeting benchmark, not a measured result or a saving over the 2027 Camry. Hyundai Canada’s model-year specifications.
Hyundai’s published Canadian new-vehicle limited warranty is five years/100,000 km; Toyota’s published basic coverage is three years/60,000 km, whichever limit arrives first. These headline periods are not identical lists of covered parts, and hybrid-system or powertrain coverage has separate terms. Confirm the applicable model-year booklets, exclusions and in-service date with the order. A longer warranty does not prove lower maintenance costs or better reliability.
Use our vehicle ownership budget worksheet to keep fuel, insurance, scheduled service and tire reserves separate from the payment. Compare the exact equipment and complete purchase prices before estimating whether fuel savings could offset a higher price.
Make the final decision around your routine
These remain sedans with a separate trunk opening. Take the stroller, mobility aid or suitcase that causes problems in your current vehicle and check it with the rear seats in the position you normally need. Rear headroom and child-seat clearance should be checked with the front occupants comfortably positioned, not with the front seats pushed forward for a photograph.
Start with Camry SE FWD when its specified equipment is sufficient and you want to keep optional upgrades under control. Start with Sonata Preferred-Trend Hybrid when the included ventilation, memory and panoramic roof address real needs. Neither should win merely because one quote has a lower monthly payment: match the term, down payment, fees and exact equipment before deciding.
