The 2026 Audi Q3 Technik and 2027 BMW X1 xDrive28i are close enough in size and purpose to share a Canadian shopping list, but their equipment needs a careful comparison. The Audi combines its new-generation powertrain with a useful Technik specification. The BMW can be tailored through packages, making the exact build more important than the xDrive28i badge alone.
This guide uses the Canadian 2026 Q3 because an exact Canadian 2027 Technik specification was not established. The BMW is a documented 2027 xDrive28i with Premium Essential Package. A Canadian inventory example, VIN WBX73EF00V5805746, confirms that package and separately lists Driving Assistance Plus with Stop and Go. Its additional options are not treated as standard on every X1. This is a specification comparison, not a road test.
A split decision on the headline outputs
The Audi Canada Q3 page lists 255 horsepower and 273 lb-ft. The BMW Canada technical data lists 241 horsepower and 295 lb-ft for the X1 xDrive28i. Both use AWD and seven-speed automatic transmissions; the Audi uses S tronic, while BMW identifies a dual-clutch Steptronic transmission.
The Audi has the larger horsepower figure; the BMW has the larger torque figure. Neither number alone tells you which will feel more natural in daily traffic. Transmission response, accelerator calibration and the situation in which you request power all affect the experience. A useful test route includes a rolling merge and several low-speed parking manoeuvres, not just one brisk acceleration from a standstill.
Also keep the selected BMW separate from an M35i. An M Sport appearance or chassis package does not turn the xDrive28i into that higher-performance model. If a showroom vehicle has different wheels or suspension equipment from the one on your quote, do not assume the ride will be identical.
Compare package content, not package names
BMW Canada describes the Premium Essential Package with Harman Kardon audio, a heated steering wheel and a panoramic glass sunroof. The Canadian Q3 Technik equipment record identifies leather seating surfaces, three-zone climate control, a panoramic roof, heated front seats and a heated steering wheel. Those are concrete items to check, rather than competing definitions of “premium.”
The BMW example has perforated Veganza upholstery. Buyers who specifically want leather should not treat that description as interchangeable with the Audi’s leather seating surfaces. Conversely, the material name does not determine whether a seat fits you. Sit in both for long enough to judge thigh support, the backrest and the ease of getting in and out.
The same caution applies to driver assistance. The Audi Technik record lists adaptive cruise control with Stop and Go and Park assist plus. The selected BMW lists Driving Assistance Plus with Stop and Go as a separate option. Confirm it on the actual X1 order if following-distance assistance matters; do not assume Premium Essential includes every assistance feature. Neither system removes the driver’s responsibility to supervise the road.
Practicality is more than the largest cargo number
Audi’s rear bench slides, reclines and folds in a 40/20/40 split. That flexibility is useful when carrying a long object with passengers, but sliding the seat to increase luggage room changes the space left for people. Test the layout with the rear seat where your passengers would actually use it.
Bring the everyday load: a stroller, mobility aid, sports bag or suitcases. Check the opening, load-floor height and whether the tailgate clears your garage. We are not awarding a cargo winner from maximum litre figures that may reflect different measurement conventions or seat positions. A bag that fits without rearranging the cabin is more informative than a headline volume.
The Q3’s 12.8-inch centre display is another visible difference, but screen size is not a usability score. Pair your own phone and try your normal navigation and audio tasks while parked. Ask both retailers to show how commonly used settings are reached rather than concentrating only on the dashboard’s appearance.
Which should you try first?
Start with the Q3 Technik if its documented comfort equipment, included adaptive cruise and flexible rear bench match your priorities. Start with the X1 if its seating and controls work better for you, then build the quote around Premium Essential and the assistance options you actually want. Compare the final equipment lists and total Canadian purchase costs, not two unmatched monthly payments.

The X1 quotation should identify Premium Essential and the separate assistance option, while the Audi quote should retain the actual Technik specification. Use the vehicle-quote guide to organize the finished equipment lists and total purchase figures.
