The 2026 Honda Pilot TrailSport and 2027 Ford Explorer Tremor may attract the same family shopping for rough-road capability, but the Pilot seats seven and the Tremor seats six. This comparison selects Ford’s standard 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine, keeping an optional V6 and its associated equipment separate from the starting-price discussion.
This is deliberately a mixed-year comparison. Honda Canada’s current Pilot specifications are for 2026; sufficiently detailed Canadian 2027 Pilot TrailSport evidence has not been established here. The competing 2027 model is documented in Canada. Nothing in this article assumes a future Pilot retains the same equipment.
Count passengers before counting features
Honda’s TrailSport has second-row captain’s chairs and a three-place third row. Ford’s Tremor also has captain’s chairs, but only two seats in the third row. If seven people must travel together, the Pilot is the viable choice within this specific pairing. Neither configuration seats eight.
If six seats are enough, there is no automatic winner from capacity alone. Install your child seats and check access for the people using the rear row. Take the bags you normally carry and see what remains with every needed seat upright. On occasional trips with fewer people, check how easily each folded-seat arrangement works for bulky items.
The equipment trade: roof opening or front-seat ventilation
Honda TrailSport includes a panoramic moonroof, heated front seats and heated second-row captain’s chairs, but not ventilated front seats. Ford Tremor lists front-seat ventilation and rear-seat heating as standard; its panoramic roof is optional for the standard-engine configuration used here. Both list multi-view camera systems. Honda Canada’s 2026 TrailSport matrix and Ford Canada’s 2027 Tremor equipment.
That is a more concrete buying choice than calling either cabin “more premium.” Decide whether ventilation is important in your use and whether you want to pay for the Ford roof. Test headroom and glare in the actual vehicle. Equipment on a Pilot Touring or an extensively optioned Tremor does not establish what the starting configurations include.
Two different powertrains and puncture plans
Honda specifies a 3.5-litre V6, ten-speed automatic and i-VTM4 AWD. The Ford has a standard 2.3-litre turbo four-cylinder, ten-speed automatic and Intelligent 4WD; a 3.0-litre V6 is optional. Compare the actual engines you intend to purchase rather than using an optional-engine road test to judge a base-engine quote.
Pilot TrailSport’s all-terrain spare is the same listed size as its road tires. Ford’s detailed Tremor list specifies a tire inflator/sealant kit, with a spare-wheel/jack kit available. For remote travel, confirm the installed equipment and its limitations before choosing. A repair kit and a spare are not interchangeable answers to every kind of tire damage.
Do not let an unresolved axle claim decide the purchase
Both brands document suspension and underbody equipment intended for rougher roads. Honda’s exact TrailSport sheet identifies off-road suspension and underbody protection, while Ford describes increased ride height, tuned suspension and underbody deflector plates. These features do not establish an instrumented off-road ranking.
Ford’s Canadian page contains a rear-axle conflict: its Tremor highlights describe a Torsen limited-slip unit, while the detailed handling list also names a non-limited-slip axle. Confirm the delivered specification on the order sheet.
If your usual route is a maintained gravel road, practical issues such as tires, visibility and luggage restraint may matter more often than a differential specification. If that axle is essential to your intended use, make its written confirmation a purchase condition rather than relying on a showroom description.
Compare prices on the same basis
Honda Canada’s 2026 Pilot TrailSport configurator, checked October 31, 2026 with its location set to National, lists C$61,750 MSRP for the automatic TrailSport in no-charge Solar Silver Metallic, without added accessories or protection products. Freight/PDI, dealer and regulatory fees, taxes, licensing, registration and insurance are extra. This is a vehicle MSRP, not an all-in purchase price or a finance payment; provincial fees and any selected options must be added before comparing complete costs.
Ford’s Canadian 2027 Explorer configurator, checked October 31, 2026, lists Tremor starting at C$63,195 in the displayed Ontario location. That figure includes delivery, specified charges and applicable adjustments or incentives; taxes, options, dealer fees and certain other charges are extra. Honda’s MSRP above excludes freight and fees, so subtracting the two advertised numbers would not show the true purchase-price gap.
Obtain current quotes for the exact builds, including any Ford roof or spare kit, and separate cash price from financing. Use the same deposit, term and trade treatment. A lower payment is not a saving if it simply stretches the loan or omits equipment you will add later.
Honda lists 11.8 L/100 km combined for TrailSport. At an illustrative 20,000 km and assumed $1.70 per litre, that represents $4,012 annually. A matching exact-configuration Ford figure has not been verified here, so no annual fuel-cost winner is claimed. Add insurance and tires using the vehicle quote and total-cost guide rather than assuming engine displacement predicts the final bill.
The practical verdict
The Pilot makes the clearest case when seven seats and its supplied roof and spare arrangement matter. The Ford is a credible alternative for six passengers when front-seat ventilation and its chosen configuration fit your needs. Confirm the axle if relevant, then decide from the actual cabin, equipment sheet and current total price.
