The Canadian 2026 Honda Pilot EX-L AWD and 2026 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum 4×4 compare two different ways to buy an eight-seat V6 family SUV. The Honda offers a practical equipment level with a removable middle seat; the Nissan includes more premium cabin features and a higher published towing ceiling. This is not an equal-trim-label comparison, and the written quotes need to reflect that. It is a specification-based guide, not a road test.
Why these Canadian versions?
Pilot EX-L has a 285-hp, 262-lb-ft 3.5-litre V6, 10-speed automatic and AWD. It seats eight with a removable second-row centre position, uses 18-inch wheels and includes heated front and second-row outboard seats. Its upholstery combines front leather with second-row leatherette. Honda Canada 2026 EX-L specifications.
Pathfinder Platinum uses a 284-hp, 259-lb-ft 3.5-litre V6 and 9-speed automatic, with standard eight-passenger seating and an available seven-seat captain’s-chair arrangement. Its equipment includes a panoramic roof, ventilated front seats, heated second-row seats and Bose audio. Nissan Canada 2026 specifications.
Do you need premium equipment or seating flexibility?
The Pilot’s removable centre seat can matter when your passenger count changes from one trip to another. Practise the removal and storage procedure, then check how your child restraints and third-row access work in each arrangement. A flexible seat is useful only if the changes are practical for your household.
The Pathfinder’s extra cabin equipment may justify a higher quote for someone who specifically wants ventilation and a panoramic roof. Do not assume those features are included on Pilot EX-L. Conversely, if you would not use them, the Nissan’s longer equipment list is not automatically better value. Price the two actual configurations rather than treating EX-L and Platinum as equivalent labels.
The towing difference deserves a proper equipment check
Honda’s 5,000-lb maximum requires an additional-cost dealer-installed accessory towing package. Nissan lists 6,000-lb capability and standard towing cooling equipment for the Canadian 2026 Pathfinder. Both remain subject to the vehicle’s configuration and loaded limits. If your trailer’s loaded weight exceeds the Pilot limit, that is a real reason to investigate the Pathfinder. It is not permission to tow at the headline maximum with eight people and all their luggage. Confirm payload, tongue weight, hitch and wiring requirements, trailer brakes and the actual vehicle’s allowances. Add Honda’s required hardware to its quote before comparing totals.
Fuel ratings: city trips versus highway travel
Pilot EX-L is rated at 12.4 city, 9.3 highway and 11.0 combined L/100 km. Nissan lists Pathfinder Platinum at 11.8 city and 9.6 highway L/100 km. Those figures are specific to Platinum, not Rock Creek. Honda EX-L ratings; Nissan Platinum ratings; NRCan 2026 guide.
The Honda has the lower highway rating, while the Nissan has the lower city rating. Consider which driving pattern makes up most of your travel. These are standardized ratings, not a prediction of your consumption, and they should not outweigh the seating and equipment your family needs.
The family test is more important than the horsepower tie
With almost identical published output, a paper horsepower contest is especially unhelpful. Drive the same route with similar loads and compare response, noise and comfort. The number of transmission ratios is not proof that one vehicle is more refined or reliable.
Fit the child restraints in approved positions, try third-row entry and load your bags behind the seats that will remain occupied. In the Pathfinder, do not use the second-row slide-forward function while a child restraint is occupied. Avoid ranking luggage space from incompatible measurement methods. Price winter tires and insurance for the exact builds, and compare financing on the same term, down payment and total-cost basis.
Which should be on your shortlist?
Start with Pilot EX-L if removable-centre-seat flexibility and its practical equipment level fit your family. Start with Pathfinder Platinum if you genuinely want its premium cabin features or need to investigate the higher towing allowance. Neither is automatically the value winner until the exact hardware and transaction prices are compared.
Before choosing the family SUV, use our vehicle quote comparison guide to match seating, required options and the complete transaction cost rather than the monthly payment alone.
