Models Available

The 2026 Explorer lineup includes Active, ST-Line, Tremor, ST and Platinum. Platinum emphasizes cabin comfort and technology. ST has its own engine and performance specification, while Tremor adds off-road equipment. Features introduced on a later model year should not be assumed to apply to this 2026 Platinum.

Platinum’s standard wheels are 20-inch Lustre Nickel-painted aluminum with 255/55R20 all-season tires. Optional 21-inch wheels use 275/45R21 tires. Exterior details include Platinum accents and a standard panoramic fixed glass roof with a power shade. A fixed glass roof should not be described as an opening panoramic sunroof.

Engine and Transmission

The Canadian 2026 Platinum uses a 2.3-litre turbocharged EcoBoost four-cylinder producing 300 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. It has automatic stop-start technology and a 10-speed automatic transmission. Ford’s year-specific Canadian configurator lists this engine, rather than the 3.0-litre V6 shown for other Explorer trims or later specifications.

Intelligent 4WD is standard, together with Terrain Management drive modes and hill descent control. The engine’s maximum output figures depend on Ford’s specified fuel and test conditions; that is separate from the regular-gasoline consumption rating below.

Towing and Payload

The Class III Trailer Tow Package is standard on the 2026 Explorer Platinum. Ford specifies a maximum trailer rating of 2,267 kg, or 5,000 lb, when properly equipped and used within the vehicle’s limits. The package includes a Class III hitch receiver, a seven-wire harness and both four-pin and seven-pin trailer connections.

Trailer tongue weight, passengers and luggage still need to fit within the particular SUV’s payload allowance. There is no single trim-wide payload number that replaces its door label. Check the loaded trailer, hitch equipment, braking requirements and vehicle ratings together before relying on the published towing ceiling.

Fuel Economy

The 2026 Natural Resources Canada guide rates the 2.3-litre Explorer AWD at 11.9 L/100 km city, 8.7 highway and 10.4 combined, using regular gasoline. These are the relevant published figures for the regular 2.3-litre Platinum configuration.

Explorer Tremor has separate ratings, even with the same engine displacement, so its consumption should not be substituted here. Standardized ratings are comparison tools; cold temperatures, towing, load and accessories can change actual fuel use.

Seating: Seven Standard, Six Available

The standard second-row 35/30/35 split bench gives Platinum seven seats: two in front, three in the middle and two in the third row. Optional second-row captain’s chairs reduce capacity to six. Both layouts are listed in the Canadian 2026 equipment and builder information.

The third row has standard PowerFold operation. Front seats are heated, ventilated and equipped with Active Motion massage; the second-row seats are heated. Ford lists an eight-way power driver’s seat and a six-way power passenger seat. A heated leather-wrapped steering wheel, ambient lighting and tri-zone automatic climate control with rear controls are also standard.

Upholstery and Cabin Features

Standard upholstery is ActiveX with leather interlaced diamond-perforated inserts, with Mojave Dusk shown in the Canadian builder. The optional Lux Leather Package upgrades the seating treatment with premium leather surfaces and quilting. It was listed at $1,500; full leather upholstery should not be assumed on every Platinum.

Cabin features include acoustic-laminated front side windows, an auto-dimming mirror, four-door Intelligent Access with push-button start, remote start and a universal garage-door opener. The fixed panoramic glass roof brings light to the cabin, with its power shade providing coverage when desired.

Cargo and Dimensions

Ford lists 461.4 litres behind the third row and a maximum cargo volume of 2,415.9 litres with the rear seating folded. The all-seats-up figure is the useful reference for carrying luggage while using every seat; the maximum figure describes a different seating arrangement.

Platinum measures approximately 5,048 mm long, 2,004 mm wide without mirrors and 1,782 mm tall, on a 3,025-mm wheelbase. Width including mirrors is approximately 2,268 mm. The optional Cargo Area Management System was listed at $360 in the Canadian builder, and separate organizers and floor liners are available.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Ford Digital Experience uses a 13.2-inch centre display, with a separate 12.3-inch instrument screen. It includes Google Maps, Google Assistant and Google Play integration, plus wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. This is the appropriate Explorer system name, rather than describing it as the SYNC 4A system used in Ranger.

Platinum has a 980-watt B&O sound system with 14 speakers, including a subwoofer. USB ports serve all three rows, and Ford lists a 110-volt, 150-watt AC outlet. The Ford Connectivity Package includes one year under the published equipment terms. Longer-term connectivity and subscription options are available separately.

Safety and Driver Assistance

Ford Co-Pilot360 Assist 2.0 is standard, with adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance, automatic emergency braking and blind-spot assistance. Platinum also includes a 360-degree camera with split view, front and rear parking sensors and reverse brake assistance. These functions support an attentive driver and have operating limits.

Ford lists AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control, front airbags, front side and knee airbags, Safety Canopy side curtains with a rollover sensor, child-seat LATCH anchors and individual tire-pressure monitoring. Child-safety rear door locks and a post-crash alert system are also included.

The Canadian builder includes BlueCruise with a one-year plus 90-day plan. A one-time-purchase option was listed at $2,635 when checked. Activation, eligible mapped roads and service terms matter; included hardware should not be treated as an indefinite service entitlement.

Pricing in CAD

The Canadian Ford configurator showed Platinum starting at $65,595. Its selected build itemized a $63,100 base MSRP plus $2,495 in fees. The automatically selected $800 Star White paint brought that example to $66,395 before further options and sales taxes.

For lineup context, the same trim screen displayed Active at $54,995, ST-Line at $60,095, Tremor at $62,695 and ST at $73,495. These are dated starting references, not as-tested prices. Options, retailer charges, registration, taxes and changing incentives affect the final quote. Compare an itemized build with the same seating, wheels, leather package and service plans.

Competition and Specification Choices

Explorer Platinum competes with upper trims of the Honda Pilot, Toyota Grand Highlander, Hyundai Palisade, Kia Telluride, Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia. Seating layouts, cargo behind an occupied third row, towing requirements and powertrain options vary across those models.

For Platinum, the useful decisions are the seven-seat bench versus six-seat captain’s-chair layout, standard ActiveX/leather-insert upholstery versus the Lux Leather Package, and standard versus optional wheels. Its 5,000-lb towing rating comes with standard trailer hardware, but the actual SUV’s payload and trailer limits still control how it can be loaded.
