The 2026 Ram 1500 Black Express and 2026 Ford F-150 STX offer a more styled pickup without automatically buying a luxury trim. The comparison becomes useful only when the cab and engine are named. A Black Express Quad Cab with a Pentastar V6 is not the same purchase as a Hurricane-powered Crew Cab, and an STX is not automatically a four-wheel-drive FX4 or V8 Lobo.
This Canadian guide was checked October 30, 2026. For family-oriented quotes, use Black Express Crew Cab 4×4 with the 5-foot-7-inch box against STX SuperCrew 4×4 with the 5.5-foot box, then identify the Ram engine explicitly.
The engine choice changes the comparison
Ram lists the standard 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 at 305 hp and 269 lb-ft, and the available standard-output Hurricane at 420 hp and 469 lb-ft. Its specific Black Express configuration text distinguishes those choices; the optional engine must not be rolled into the V6 starting price. Ford’s standard STX powertrain is the 2.7-litre EcoBoost V6 with 325 hp and 400 lb-ft, paired with a 10-speed automatic. Source: Ford Canada’s 2026 F-150 STX page.
The Ford’s published standard-engine output exceeds the Ram’s standard V6 figures. The optional Ram Hurricane exceeds those Ford figures instead. This is exactly why “Black Express versus STX” is not enough information for a price or performance verdict. Decide which engines you are considering before interpreting either quote.
Do not use these output figures as towing ratings. Ask how the configured truck meets your load and route requirements, then test the powertrain in ordinary traffic. A specification sheet does not establish which engine will feel smoother, quieter or more responsive in your daily use.
Cab and bed: make the rear seat work
Ram shows Quad Cab 4×4 with a 6-foot-4-inch box and Crew Cab 4×4 with a 5-foot-7-inch box. Ford lists STX SuperCab with a 6.5-foot bed and SuperCrew with 5.5- or 6.5-foot beds. Confirm current order combinations rather than treating those names as identical cabin dimensions. Sources: Ram Canada’s 2026 Black Express configuration page; Ford Canada’s 2026 F-150 STX page.
If rear passengers are frequent, sit behind the correctly adjusted driver’s seat and test access in a realistic parking space. If you carry child restraints, check installation and usable access under the vehicle and restraint instructions. An attractive payment on the wrong cab is not good value.
If bed length is the priority, bring the dimensions of the item that must fit with the tailgate closed. Include any toolbox or rack in that exercise. A longer bed and a larger passenger cabin may change parking and storage requirements, so measure the driveway or garage rather than relying on how compact a truck appears in a photograph.
Style and cabin equipment without the wrong package
Black Express includes black 20-inch wheels, a sport hood, LED fog lamps and black cloth bucket seats with a full-length console and 7-inch gauge cluster. Source: Ram Canada’s 2026 Black Express configuration page.
STX lists 18-inch gloss-black wheels, cloth front bucket seats with a console and a 12-inch SYNC 4 centre touchscreen. The standard instrument display is 4 inches; a 12-inch digital instrument screen is optional. Neither is the centre touchscreen. Ford identifies FX4 equipment group 201A as an additional off-road specification and Lobo as a separate package. Source: Ford Canada’s 2026 F-150 STX page.
Choose the equipment you will use rather than the largest collection of names on a listing. Try the console storage, phone connection, seating position and controls while parked. Ask for wheel and tire replacement quotes if the appearance specification is important to you; the purchase price is not the only cost attached to a wheel choice.
Neither Black Express styling nor an STX badge establishes a locking differential, skid plates or the rest of an off-road package. Have any required hardware listed on the build sheet. Do not borrow Warlock features for the Ram or FX4/Lobo features for a standard STX.
Match the trailer equipment before comparing capacity
For each exact truck, obtain the manufacturer’s configuration-specific tow rating and check its loading label. Account for passengers, accessories, tools, bed cargo and trailer tongue load. Establish the trailer’s loaded weight and confirm the required braking and hitch equipment from the relevant instructions.
A high advertised towing figure may require a different engine, axle, cab or package from the truck you are pricing. A trailer receiver is useful hardware, but it does not answer the complete compatibility question.
Our worked payload example shows how people, cargo, accessories and trailer tongue load use the loading allowance. Its hypothetical SUV weights are not ratings for these pickups. Apply the method to the actual truck’s loading label, then check its tow rating, vehicle and axle limits, combined-weight limit, and hitch and braking requirements.
Get a price comparison that survives the small print
Ask for itemized current Canadian quotes with cab, bed, engine and driven wheels written at the top. Include every package you actually need, separate freight and fees, and make taxes and financing conditions clear. A two-wheel-drive STX starting figure should not be compared with a Black Express 4×4 total as though the equipment matches.
Obtain the EnerGuide information for the trucks on your quotes, and do not attach the Hurricane’s consumption reference to the Pentastar. If financing, compare total payments over the same term as well as the monthly amount.
Which one should you price first?
Start with STX if its standard EcoBoost output and centre-screen equipment meet your priorities without extra packages. Start with Black Express if its appearance and cabin layout appeal, but settle the Pentastar-versus-Hurricane decision before judging value. For either, the right cab and verified load suitability should come before cosmetic upgrades.
