The 2025 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 is a useful middle ground for buyers who want four-wheel-drive truck hardware and a more comfortable cabin without stepping into the ZR2. The important comparison is not simply which badge sits higher: Trail Boss and Z71 put their equipment budgets into different things.

Engine and transmission
The Canadian 2025 fleet guide lists the TurboMax 2.7-litre four-cylinder at 310 hp and 430 lb-ft, paired with an eight-speed automatic. GM Canadian 2025 fleet guide. This is not an older Colorado V6 or diesel configuration.
Choose between trims based on the equipment you need, not on the assumption that paying more always buys a different engine. For daily ownership, compare the seating position, visibility, loading routine and available storage alongside the specifications.
Z71 hardware
The Canadian Z71 catalogue lists four-wheel drive, a two-speed Autotrac transfer case, an automatic locking rear differential and 18-inch all-terrain tires. Canadian Z71 equipment. The rear differential is not the same specification as the ZR2’s driver-selectable front and rear lockers.
The Trail Boss catalogue separately identifies a two-inch factory lift and wider stance. Canadian Trail Boss equipment. Do not transfer that lift description to Z71 just because both are marketed for outdoor use. The most suitable version depends on your actual terrain and access requirements.
Cabin and technology
Z71 equipment includes heated front seats, a power driver’s seat, remote start, dual-zone climate control and wireless charging. Its displays are an 11.3-inch centre screen and an 11-inch driver information centre. Ventilated seating, a heated steering wheel, adaptive cruise and surround-view cameras are listed as optional equipment rather than universal Z71 features. Standard and optional Z71 equipment.
Fuel economy
Natural Resources Canada lists the ordinary 2025 Colorado 4WD at 13.6 L/100 km city, 11.0 highway and 12.4 combined. It separately lists a Mud Terrain Tire configuration at 13.1 combined, ZR2 at 14.0 and ZR2 Bison at 14.9. 2025 Canadian fuel-consumption data. Match the actual configuration rather than applying one number to every Colorado.
At 20,000 km annually, 12.4 L/100 km is approximately 2,480 litres. That is a planning calculation based on the published rating, not a result from this video. A tire change, towing or winter use can change the real-world outcome.
Towing and carrying
Chevrolet Canada’s 2025 Colorado trailering chart lists a maximum trailer weight of 7,700 lb for properly equipped TurboMax configurations. That is not a rating for every Colorado: the chart lists 6,000 lb for ZR2 and specifies additional equipment requirements for the 7,700-lb ratings. Confirm the exact truck’s trailering equipment and individual loading labels before planning a trailer purchase. Passengers, cargo and accessories can reduce the amount it can tow.
Include people, tools, accessories and trailer tongue weight when assessing the load. A tonneau cover or bed rack also needs to work with the items you carry; check access, security and dimensions before choosing it only for appearance.
Canadian trim comparison and pricing
Current Canadian manufacturer pricing for these exact 2025 configurations has not been verified as of October 31, 2026. Vehicle prices and price differences are therefore omitted; the chart compares equipment only.
| 2025 Crew Cab 4WD | What the comparison means |
|---|---|
| Trail Boss | 2-inch factory lift and wider stance; a different chassis setup from Z71. |
| Z71 | Heated front seats and dual-zone climate, plus automatic rear locker and two-speed transfer case. |
| ZR2 | Driver-selectable front and rear locking differentials instead of Z71’s automatic rear locker. |
Check Chevrolet Canada’s official Colorado page for manufacturer pricing. Match the exact model year, trim and equipment; a current later-year starting price is not a 2025 Z71 quotation.
The ZR2 catalogue confirms the front and rear selectable lockers; that is a genuine mechanical distinction, not simply different trim upholstery. ZR2 configuration. Conversely, a buyer focused on commuting and occasional hauling may value Z71 comfort more than additional off-road hardware.
