After a Seasonal Wheel Change: Get the Right Torque-Check Instructions

Your winter wheels are installed, but the handover should include more than the keys and an invoice. Before leaving, find out whether a follow-up wheel-fastener check is required, when it should happen and who will perform it.

There is no single return distance or tightening value that this guide can safely prescribe for every vehicle and installation. The useful answer is the instruction for your exact vehicle, wheel setup and service—not a number remembered from another car.

Start with the specification, not “extra tight”

Transport Canada says wheel nuts must be tightened to the vehicle manufacturer’s specifications and directs owners to the owner’s manual for the correct tightness. A wheel-fastener torque specification is not the same thing as tire pressure. Keep the number and its units together when recording it.

Ask the installer to confirm the applicable specification for the wheels and hardware actually fitted. If the winter setup differs from the original equipment, say so. Do not take a torque value from another trim, an unverified online chart or the neighbouring vehicle in the service bay.

This is a service-planning guide, not instructions to loosen or tighten wheel nuts yourself. Applying more force “to be safe” is not a substitute for the correct procedure.

Ask whether you need to return

Shop procedures can differ. Kal Tire’s published process describes an initial hand torque in the service bay and a second check before the vehicle is returned. Under that particular procedure, it says a subsequent visit after 50 km is not required, although customers can request a complimentary check. That is Kal Tire’s stated process—not a rule for every installer.

  • Was the final torque check completed before handover?
  • Is another check required for this installation?
  • Is the instruction based on distance, time or both?
  • Where can it be completed, and is an appointment or fee involved?
  • How does that instruction fit the vehicle manufacturer’s requirements?

If the invoice, verbal advice and manual seem inconsistent, have the installer resolve the discrepancy. Do not simply choose whichever instruction means the longest wait.

Turn a return distance into an odometer reminder

Record the odometer reading at collection. If the shop gives a distance-based follow-up, add that distance to the collection reading.

For example, if your installer specifically instructs a check after 80 km, collecting the vehicle at 42,350 km gives a reminder reading of 42,430 km. These are illustrative numbers, not a recommended interval.

A calendar reminder can help, but it does not track kilometres. Before a long trip, tell the shop your route and expected distance so the follow-up can be arranged rather than forgotten.

If you have already passed the instructed point, contact the installer promptly for advice. Do not add more driving merely to reach a convenient appointment without discussing the situation.

Use current instructions—not just an old screenshot

Specifications can be corrected. Transport Canada recall 2021336 concerned certain Ram trucks whose manuals listed an incorrect wheel-nut torque. The recall was limited to affected trucks with dual rear wheels and flanged lug nuts; the remedy included inspection and an updated specification. It was not a recall of every Ram.

That example is a reason to ask a qualified provider about applicable updates—not to guess a replacement number yourself.

Symptoms are not an appointment reminder

If the vehicle develops new shaking, clunking or instability after wheel work, contact the installer promptly. Do not assume a routine retorque will diagnose or fix it. If steering or control is affected, stop safely and arrange assistance rather than continuing to the planned check.

Keep the installation invoice, written follow-up instruction and confirmation when the check is completed. Ask the provider to explain any abnormal finding and whether further inspection is needed.

A good handover leaves you with three clear answers: which specification applies, whether another check is required, and exactly how to arrange it.
