Starting Delivery or Rideshare Work in Ontario? Confirm These Insurance Details First

Ontario insurance guide · Sources checked October 30, 2026

Before accepting your first paid trip, give your own insurer the actual work plan. “Business use” is too vague if it could mean visiting clients, carrying restaurant orders or transporting paying passengers. Platform insurance and acceptance by your personal insurer are separate matters; downloading an app does not answer both.

Describe the job precisely

Sonnet’s business-use guidance distinguishes ordinary commuting and some business travel from delivery or rideshare work, and tells drivers to disclose the change. Depending on the insurer and activity, a different policy or endorsement may be needed. Undisclosed, uninsured activity can put a claim or policy at risk.

Send your representative a factual summary before starting:

  • Every app, employer or business you will work for.
  • Whether you will carry passengers, food, parcels or other goods.
  • Expected hours per week and additional kilometres per year.
  • Where you will drive, including any trips outside Ontario.
  • Who owns the vehicle and who will drive it.
  • Whether it is financed or leased.
  • Whether you plan to run multiple apps at once or accept direct cash jobs.

Ask for a written answer identifying the insurer, vehicle, approved activity, required changes and effective date. A useful confirmation would name the actual service rather than simply say “business use added.” Do not start the work while a necessary insurance change remains an unanswered request.

Check the platform and insurer, not just the brand name

FSRA maintains a list of approved Ontario rideshare, carshare and delivery insurance products. As checked on October 30, 2026, examples include Uber ridesharing with Economical Mutual Insurance Company, Lyft with Aviva Insurance Company of Canada, Amazon Flex delivery with Northbridge General Insurance Company, and Uber Eats with Economical Insurance Company.

These are examples, not recommendations or a promise that your intended work qualifies. Open the current list and obtain the current Ontario certificate and policy for the exact platform. A policy for a similarly named service, another province or an earlier year is not a reliable substitute. If the service is absent, ask for evidence of the applicable approved arrangement or appropriate commercial coverage before proceeding.

Carsharing is also different: letting someone rent your vehicle is not the same transaction as driving passengers yourself. Do not use one platform’s insurance summary to answer questions about another business model.

Map a complete shift

Write down what happens from leaving home until returning. Have the representative or platform insurer explain coverage at each transition:

Part of the shiftQuestion requiring an answer
Driving with all apps offDoes my personal policy accept my disclosed overall use?
Logged in and waitingWhich policy applies, with what limits and deductible?
Request accepted, travelling to pickupWhen does the relevant coverage begin?
Passenger or delivery on boardWhat vehicle-damage and liability protection applies?
Job completed or cancelledExactly when does the coverage change?
Another app active or a direct job acceptedDoes that change eligibility or create an exclusion?

This worksheet is a way to expose unanswered questions, not an assertion that all platforms divide a shift identically. Save the answers alongside the actual policy documents.

Look beyond the headline liability limit

For a concrete example, Economical’s Ontario Uber summary lists $1 million third-party liability while available for requests and $2 million after accepting a request and during the trip. Its Ontario collision/comprehensive protection is contingent on carrying those coverages personally and has a $2,500 deductible. The commercial policy does not cover offline personal use. The insurer also says personal-policy endorsements generally do not transfer to the commercial policy in Ontario.

Those details matter more to your immediate cash needs than the largest number in an advertisement. Suppose a covered physical-damage claim had a $2,500 deductible: keeping only $500 available would leave a $2,000 funding shortfall. That is a budget illustration, not a claim determination. Confirm your own contract before using any number.

Ask specifically about damage to your vehicle, transportation while it is repaired, depreciation-related protection, selected accident benefits and any exclusions relevant to the work. Do not assume an optional feature on your personal policy follows you throughout an app-based shift.

Keep a claim-ready record

Store the current personal and platform insurance documents somewhere accessible. Record how each insurer wants a claim reported. After an incident, preserve trip identifiers, times, acceptance or cancellation records and relevant app status without altering them. Follow safety and police-reporting instructions first, then disclose the work circumstances accurately when reporting the claim.

Revisit the arrangement when adding a platform, changing vehicles, increasing hours or accepting a different kind of job. Insurance confirmation is tied to the facts you supplied; an approval for one activity should not become an assumption about every future side business.
