2026 Chevrolet Tahoe Premier vs 2027 Ford Expedition Platinum: Seven-Seat Layouts and the Cost of Options

A seven-seat full-size SUV should make its second and third rows useful, not simply impressive in photographs. Chevrolet Tahoe Premier and Ford Expedition Platinum both provide captain’s chairs and generous comfort equipment, but their seat-folding arrangements, loading access and option lists give a family different things to evaluate. Neither badge guarantees that the demonstration vehicle matches a basic order.

This Canadian comparison selects the regular-length 2026 Tahoe Premier with the standard 5.3-litre gasoline V8 and the regular-length 2027 Expedition Platinum 600A with its standard 3.5-litre EcoBoost engine. These are not Suburban or Expedition MAX. Chevrolet’s complete Canadian specification currently documents 2026, so that verified year is used rather than transferring its equipment into an insufficiently established 2027 configuration. Ford’s Canadian page explicitly identifies 2027.

Start with the people using the rear rows

Tahoe Premier includes heated and ventilated front seats, heated second-row bucket seats and seven-seat capacity. Chevrolet also lists a power-sliding centre console and ten-speaker Bose audio. Its 5.3-litre V8 is the standard engine; the 6.2-litre V8 and 3.0-litre diesel are alternatives, not equipment assumed here. Chevrolet Canada’s 2026 Tahoe trim and engine specifications.

Expedition Platinum starts with seven leather-trimmed seats, heated and ventilated front seats, heated power-folding second-row captain’s chairs, and a 40/20/40 power-folding third row with power recline. An eight-seat arrangement is optional. The selected 600A uses a ten-speed automatic and four-wheel drive; the high-output engine is optional. Ford’s three-part rear-seat split is worth testing if you frequently carry a long object alongside third-row passengers. Decide which seating positions must remain usable and whether the object can be secured without obstructing occupants. A convenient folding pattern does not make an unsecured load safe. Bring the actual item or its measurements rather than relying on a showroom photograph of a completely empty cabin.

For either vehicle, test third-row entry with the second row set for its regular occupants. If child restraints are part of the routine, follow both vehicle and restraint instructions before operating seats. Do not assume a powered folding demonstration can be repeated with an occupied seat or an installed restraint. Also check whether someone using the third row can reach their belongings and climate controls.

The option sheet matters even at this level

Chevrolet identifies Super Cruise and the AutoSense liftgate as available on Premier. Ford lists its panoramic roof, massage seats, power-deployable running boards and continuously controlled damping as optional. Platinum therefore should not be described as automatically including the equipment of an Ultimate or performance-package example. Both brands’ attractive display vehicles can represent a substantially different purchase from the baseline trims.

Build a short list of features you would genuinely miss. Separate seating comfort from appearance changes and assistance subscriptions. Have the retailer identify each required item on the specific order, then price the completed vehicle. If a feature is bundled with several things you do not want, its practical cost is the package difference, not an imagined standalone price.

Test the rear opening, not just the cargo number

Ford lists a powered upper liftgate and lower tailgate. Try reaching a bag near the seatbacks with the lower section in the position you would normally use, then compare the Tahoe’s loading routine. A lower platform can be useful, but its usefulness depends on your height, the object being loaded and the clearance behind the vehicle. Check the manoeuvre in a realistic garage or parking space.

This comparison does not turn a manufacturer’s maximum cargo figure into a family-trip verdict. Leave the seats occupied as they would be on that trip and check whether the stroller, bags and cooler fit together. A vehicle that holds everything only after folding a required seat has not solved the problem. Check cargo security as well as whether the hatch can close.

Purchase price is only the first equipment cost

Chevrolet’s Canadian price disclosure explains that its displayed prices include freight, the air-conditioning charge, dealer fees up to the stated maximum and applicable estimated luxury tax, while sales tax, licence, insurance and registration are extra. Ask Ford and Chevrolet retailers to itemize the same categories instead of subtracting two differently presented headline prices.

The Platinum equipment list also makes a practical ownership distinction: 20-inch wheels are standard, while 22- and 24-inch choices are optional. Before selecting the appearance package, request installed replacement and winter-tire quotes for that exact wheel-and-tire specification. Do not assume the larger wheel’s purchase option price captures its later running costs, or promise a saving without local tire quotes.

Use our vehicle quote comparison guide to compare the completed seven-seat builds, then keep the cost of required accessories and financing separate. A lower payment obtained with a longer term is not evidence that the SUV or its equipment is cheaper.

A sensible buying decision

Choose the Tahoe first if its seating, console and loading arrangement suit your daily routine without expensive additions. Choose the Expedition first if the third-row split and powered split opening solve a recurring need. Neither recommendation is a road-test verdict. Before towing, use the actual vehicle’s payload label and configuration-specific documentation; a trim name or model-range maximum is not a loaded towing calculation.

Compare complete Canadian quotes and confirm the exact model year before signing. The mixed-year choice here is deliberate, not a claim that an incoming Tahoe will be unchanged. A later 2027 Chevrolet order deserves a fresh equipment check rather than a relabelled version of this comparison.
