2027 Mercedes-Benz GLC 350e vs 2027 Volvo XC60 T8 Ultra: Canadian Plug-In Hybrid Comparison

The 2027 Mercedes-Benz GLC 350e 4MATIC and 2027 Volvo XC60 T8 AWD Ultra make two different arguments for a luxury plug-in hybrid. The Mercedes deserves attention if charging opportunities shape your day. The Volvo deserves attention if you want a well-equipped five-seat SUV with a stronger published power figure. Neither should be bought on the assumption that a plug automatically guarantees low running costs.

This Canadian comparison uses both manufacturers’ current 2027 listings. It is a specification-based buying guide, not a claim that these exact vehicles have been driven back-to-back. Optional equipment matters, particularly the Mercedes’ DC-charging system.

The Canadian specifications that matter

Mercedes-Benz lists 313 combined horsepower, 406 lb-ft, a nine-speed automatic and five seats. Its charging specifications show 9.6-kW AC capability, while 60-kW DC charging is explicitly available rather than standard. Overall length is 4,716 mm; width including mirrors is 2,076 mm. These figures refer to the plug-in GLC 350e, not the separate all-electric GLC. Mercedes-Benz Canada specifications.

Volvo lists five seats, AWD, a 19-kWh nominal battery and estimated combined output of 401 horsepower, with 494 lb-ft. Its published AC charging example is approximately five hours from empty to full on the specified Level 2 supply. Length is 4,708 mm and width including mirrors is 2,117 mm. The Canadian PHEV page identifies Ultra equipment including a panoramic roof and Harman Kardon audio. Volvo Canada specifications; Canadian Ultra equipment listing.

Charging: buy for your parking routine

The useful question is not simply which vehicle charges faster. It is where the car sits long enough to charge. If you arrive home each evening and leave the next morning, a quicker refill may not change your routine. If you make several journeys with short breaks between them, the Mercedes’ charging equipment becomes a more relevant part of the decision.

For the GLC, put the DC option on the actual order sheet before assigning it any value. Then look at stations you would realistically use: an available charger beside your usual stop is more useful than a faster station requiring a detour. Compare the session cost with the distance you expect to drive electrically. A charging capability is a convenience option, not an automatic saving.

For either vehicle, start with permission to charge where you park and an installation quote. A condo buyer without dependable access has a different ownership case from a homeowner with a dedicated connection. Do not build a purchase decision around an advertised charging time without confirming the electrical supply and equipment behind it.

Power is not the whole driving experience

The Volvo has the higher published combined output. That makes it the more interesting starting point for someone who values performance, but it does not establish a ride-quality or handling winner. Drive both on the same route, with similar passenger loads, and ask to experience operation after the readily available electric charge has been used. Smoothness during a showroom demonstration should not be your only reference point.

Test the ordinary tasks, too: accelerating into traffic, easing into a tight parking space and adjusting climate settings without studying the screen. An impressive specification matters less if the controls irritate you every commute. Bring your phone and confirm the functions you actually use rather than buying a dashboard on appearance.

Space, equipment and the final quote

These are similarly sized vehicles, but their mirror-to-mirror dimensions are a reminder to measure the garage opening, not merely its floor length. Bring the family’s child seats and normal luggage. We are not awarding a cargo winner from litre figures measured or presented differently.

Compare written Canadian quotes with the same must-have equipment, taxes and delivery charges. Keep charging installation and winter-wheel costs visible rather than burying them in a monthly payment. No price winner is declared here without equivalent configurations.

Which one belongs on your shortlist?

Start with the GLC 350e if its optional DC capability solves a real charging problem in your week. Start with the XC60 T8 Ultra if the stronger published output and its identified equipment fit your priorities. If neither has a dependable place to plug in, settle that issue before choosing between the badges.

Separate charging equipment and optional comfort packages from the vehicle price. The vehicle quote and total-cost guide provides a written framework for that comparison.
