2026 Hyundai Sonata Preferred-Trend AWD vs 2027 Toyota Camry SE Upgrade AWD: Gas or Hybrid, With Different Comfort Priorities

The 2026 Hyundai Sonata Preferred-Trend AWD and 2027 Toyota Camry SE Upgrade AWD answer the same basic request—an all-wheel-drive midsize sedan—but not with the same powertrain. The Hyundai is a conventional gasoline car with a generous comfort specification. The Toyota is a hybrid with an AWD-specific equipment package. For a Canadian buyer, the useful question is what that difference means for the whole purchase, not which badge appears more winter-ready.

This guide deliberately pairs verified Canadian 2026 Sonata equipment with Toyota’s published 2027 Camry specification. Exact 2027 Sonata equipment was not established, so no future-year carryover is assumed. It is a specification comparison, not a back-to-back road test or a prediction of either vehicle’s real-world running costs.

AWD does not identify the engine

Hyundai Canada’s 2026 equipment table identifies Preferred-Trend AWD with a naturally aspirated 2.5-litre four-cylinder, 191 horsepower and an eight-speed automatic. The separate Preferred-Trend Hybrid is front-wheel drive; it is not the powertrain being compared here. Confirm the AWD and engine descriptions together on the vehicle quotation.

Toyota Canada’s 2027 SE Upgrade AWD listing specifies a 2.5-litre hybrid system with 232 horsepower. This is also not the basic SE FWD, whose output and equipment differ. Toyota’s hybrid system rating and Hyundai’s gasoline-engine figure are not evidence of a measured acceleration gap. Compare their response in the situations that matter to you rather than treating the difference as a stopwatch result.

A hybrid’s additional hardware is not automatically a reason to buy or reject it. Work out your annual distance, the balance of short urban trips and highway driving, and how long you expect to keep the car. Then compare exact-year Canadian fuel-consumption labels and written purchase quotes. A fuel-cost calculation that ignores the equipment and financing difference can be more misleading than helpful.

Two different ways to equip a comfortable sedan

The Sonata includes leather seating surfaces, heated and ventilated front seats, driver seat-and-mirror memory and a power-adjustable passenger seat. Its panoramic sunroof and heated steering wheel are documented in the Canadian table. This is not a case of assigning top-trim N Line features to the AWD car; the selected Preferred-Trend column supports those comfort items.

Camry SE Upgrade AWD lists heated mixed-fabric front seats, an eight-way power driver’s seat with lumbar support and a six-way manual passenger seat. It includes a heated steering wheel and a moonroof. A household with two drivers or a passenger who frequently changes position should try those adjustment arrangements before deciding that the cabins are equivalent.

The Sonata’s ventilation and memory make a useful case for it when those features solve daily frustrations. The Camry’s specification may be entirely sufficient if you do not need them. Avoid paying for a higher Toyota grade simply to make every line match: first decide which missing features would actually change your ownership experience.

Wheels and screens: match the specific equipment

Both selected versions have 18-inch alloy wheels. That is a much better starting point for a tire-cost comparison than comparing the Sonata with a Camry photographed on another grade’s wheels. Ask for winter-wheel compatibility and tire quotes for the actual cars. AWD can assist traction, but it does not replace appropriate tires or remove the need to adapt to road conditions.

The Sonata combines a 12.3-inch audio touchscreen with a 4.2-inch instrument display. The Camry lists an 8-inch multimedia screen and 7-inch driver information display. Neither screen-size comparison tells you how easy it is to adjust the heating, follow directions or change an audio source. Try those operations with your own phone while the car is parked.

Toyota also lists a wireless charger and five USB ports on SE Upgrade AWD. Do not infer that every convenience shown on a general Sonata page belongs to Preferred-Trend AWD; its navigation-equipped audio and larger digital instrument display are assigned to a different trim in Hyundai’s table. Have the retailer identify any equipment that is essential to you in writing.

Budget the fuel and the coverage separately

Hyundai’s exact 2026 table lists 8.6 L/100 km combined for the selected Sonata AWD gasoline. At 20,000 km a year, that rating corresponds to 1,720 litres before allowing for your conditions and driving. Multiply by your own fuel-price assumption rather than treating that volume as a dollar bill. This is a Sonata budgeting benchmark, not a measured result or a saving over the 2027 Camry. Hyundai Canada’s model-year specifications.

Hyundai’s published Canadian new-vehicle limited warranty is five years/100,000 km; Toyota’s published basic coverage is three years/60,000 km, whichever limit arrives first. These headline periods are not identical lists of covered parts, and hybrid-system or powertrain coverage has separate terms. Confirm the applicable model-year booklets, exclusions and in-service date with the order. A longer warranty does not prove lower maintenance costs or better reliability.

Use our vehicle ownership budget worksheet to keep fuel, insurance, scheduled service and tire reserves separate from the payment. Compare the exact equipment and complete purchase prices before estimating whether fuel savings could offset a higher price.

Choose the trade-off, not just the drivetrain badge

Before the final quote, fit the regular rear passengers and any child restraints with the front seats set realistically. Test the trunk opening with the item you carry most often. Sedan suitability can turn on access and shape rather than the largest advertised luggage-volume number, and neither AWD nor a hybrid badge resolves those practical questions.

Shortlist Sonata Preferred-Trend AWD when its included comfort equipment and conventional gasoline powertrain fit your priorities. Shortlist Camry SE Upgrade AWD when a hybrid is central to your plan and its specified cabin is enough. Compare total Canadian transaction costs with the same financing assumptions, then keep any proposed 2027 Sonata refresh separate rather than silently substituting a different year.
