2026 Audi SQ5 vs 2026 Mercedes-AMG GLC 43: Canadian Powertrain, Suspension and Option Choices

The 2026 Audi SQ5 TFSI quattro and 2026 Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 4MATIC approach the fast family SUV differently. Audi pairs a turbocharged V6 with a cabin built around a broad digital display. Mercedes uses a high-output four-cylinder and includes rear-wheel steering. The important choice is not simply which engine has more cylinders or which badge carries more prestige: it is which combination remains useful when the vehicle is doing ordinary family work.

This comparison uses verified Canadian 2026 models. The exact Canadian 2027 SQ5 configuration was not established here, and the newer AMG GLC 53 is not being substituted for the approved GLC 43 matchup. These are specification-based buying observations, not impressions from a back-to-back road test. Confirm the model year on any quotation rather than assuming a similarly named vehicle has the same equipment.

V6 versus four-cylinder is the starting point

Audi Canada lists 362 hp and 406 lb-ft, a turbocharged V6, quattro AWD and a seven-speed S tronic transmission. Its national model listing identifies the 2026 SQ5 TFSI quattro; this article does not silently upgrade that baseline to a differently packaged SQ5 or to the Sportback.

Mercedes-Benz Canada identifies the 2026 GLC 43 with a hybrid-assisted 2.0-litre four-cylinder, electric exhaust-gas turbocharger, 416 hp, 369 lb-ft and nine-speed AMG transmission. Its AWD system is branded AMG Performance 4MATIC. The published power advantage does not establish a real-world acceleration, fuel-cost or reliability winner.

A useful test drive should include the situations you encounter every day: moving away gently, joining a faster road, rolling through slow traffic and accelerating after a brief pause. Listen at a normal cruising speed as well as under acceleration. An engine note you enjoy for a few seconds may matter differently during an hour-long commute, and another person in the household may have a different preference.

Suspension and steering deserve more attention than wheel styling

Audi describes an S-tuned adaptive air suspension with adjustable ride height. Mercedes lists AMG RIDE CONTROL suspension and active rear-wheel steering as standard GLC 43 equipment. These are different mechanisms, not interchangeable promises of a comfortable ride. Try the available settings over the same representative road, keeping the wheel and tire specification in mind.

The Audi starts with 21-inch wheels; the Mercedes lists 20-inch wheels, with 21-inch designs optional. That does not prove either is more comfortable. Ask what tire is actually fitted, obtain replacement and winter-wheel quotations, and confirm an approved size rather than assuming a smaller aftermarket wheel will clear the brakes. Wheel appearance is a one-time showroom decision; replacement cost and seasonal suitability recur.

The technology bill can change the comparison

Audi describes an 11.9-inch instrument display alongside its 14.5-inch central display. Its passenger screen, upgraded Bang & Olufsen audio and adaptive cruise assist are available equipment. The Mercedes lists a panoramic sunroof as standard, but places its 360-degree camera, DISTRONIC distance assistance, heated rear seats and Burmester audio in the optional list. Match the actual builds rather than assuming a performance badge includes every convenience.

Make a short list of functions that will earn their place in the purchase. A surrounding camera may matter more in a narrow garage than a passenger display; rear-seat heating may matter more to regular passengers than an audio upgrade. Have the retailer show each desired function on the vehicle itself. A photograph or a general model-page highlight is not a substitute for an equipment code on the order.

Keep family practicality in the decision

Take the usual passengers and luggage to the viewing. Set the driver seat first, then assess the rear seating and the ease of getting in and out. If you use child restraints, check the actual installation and access rather than judging the space from a photograph. Test the luggage that travels most often instead of awarding a cargo winner from measurements that may use different methods.

Neither AWD nor a performance suspension replaces suitable tires and attentive driving. Nor does a premium badge establish a towing rating for the vehicle you receive. If a trailer or roof-mounted load is part of the plan, confirm the required equipment and applicable limits for the exact order before paying for cosmetic extras.

Which belongs on your shortlist?

Start with the SQ5 if its V6, air-suspension arrangement and display layout fit your priorities. Start with the GLC 43 if its included rear-wheel steering and particular AMG powertrain appeal more. Then compare finished Canadian quotations with equivalent convenience equipment and a clear delivery commitment. The better purchase is the one whose specification you will use, not the one with the most impressive collection of optional features on a webpage.

Include approved winter-wheel fitments and the convenience options you require in the SQ5 and GLC 43 budget. Our ownership worksheet helps organize actual service and tire quotations without guessing which performance SUV costs less to maintain.
