The Mazda CX-30 GS Kuro and Kia Seltos EX Premium put different priorities into a small AWD SUV. The Mazda combines stronger published engine output with a six-speed automatic and a distinctive infotainment-control arrangement. The Kia puts more equipment into seat comfort, rear-passenger amenities and loading convenience. Neither specification makes the choice for every household.
This Canadian comparison deliberately uses the 2026 Mazda CX-30 GS Kuro AWD and redesigned 2027 Kia Seltos EX Premium AWD. Mazda’s Canadian showroom and latest verified CX-30 packaging information still identify 2026; exact Canadian 2027 CX-30 specifications were not confirmed. Kia’s 2027 Canadian specification is available. No claim is made that the Mazda’s next model year is unchanged.
The Mazda specification
The Canadian 2026 CX-30 has 186 hp and 186 lb-ft from its naturally aspirated 2.5-litre engine, with a six-speed automatic and AWD. GS has a 10.25-inch display, wireless smartphone integration and charging; GS Kuro adds a moonroof, cloth/leatherette seating, a ten-way power driver’s seat with memory and 18-inch wheels. Touch operation is for Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, not a promise that every native menu is touch-controlled. Mazda Canada’s exact 2026 packaging announcement.
The Kia specification
The 2027 Seltos EX Premium has a 147-hp, 132-lb-ft 2.0-litre engine, IVT automatic and AWD. Its Canadian equipment includes a panoramic roof, powered driver’s seat with memory and relaxation function, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats and a smart power liftgate. The instrument cluster remains four inches; do not give this trim the X-Line’s 12.3-inch cluster or turbo engine. Kia Canada’s 2027 gasoline Seltos brochure.
The first decision is who uses the back seats
If rear passengers are a regular part of your week, Kia’s comfort equipment deserves more attention than a horsepower comparison. Have those passengers sit in the vehicle, adjust the seatback and check access with your child restraints installed correctly. A heated rear seat is not a substitute for sufficient space or comfortable access.
The power tailgate is another feature whose value depends on how you load the vehicle. Try it with the bags or stroller you normally carry and check the opening height in a garage-sized space. It is less valuable if you prefer to operate the hatch manually or rarely load bulky items.
If the SUV mainly carries one or two people, those rear-seat advantages may not justify much extra spending. The driver’s seat, controls and powertrain response then become stronger deciding factors.
Try the Mazda’s controls before judging them
A rotary-controller interface and a touchscreen-led interface encourage different habits. Set a destination, change audio sources and reconnect your phone while parked in both vehicles. Check which tasks require more steps and whether frequently used functions are easy to find.
Do not assume the Mazda’s display size means the entire interface works like a tablet. Likewise, do not assume a larger or more touch-oriented screen is automatically easier to use. Familiarity can matter more than a diagonal measurement.
The engine difference is substantial on paper, but not a road-test result
The Mazda has 39 more published horsepower and 54 more lb-ft of torque. That gives a buyer interested in engine response a good reason to drive it, not a basis for an invented acceleration time.
Use the same hill and merge lane in both vehicles. Pay attention to how smoothly you can adjust speed, how the engine sounds during a longer climb and whether the transmission’s behaviour is comfortable. The Mazda’s stepped automatic and Kia’s IVT may feel different; neither label proves a reliability advantage.
Price: compare MSRP with MSRP, then compare real quotes
Checked October 31, 2026, Mazda’s Canadian configurator lists the 2026 CX-30 GS Kuro AWD at C$34,400 MSRP with Ontario selected, before extra-cost paint, accessories, freight/PDI, fees and taxes; no incentive is deducted. A current manufacturer-site price for the 2027 Seltos EX Premium AWD could not be verified on the same date. Check Kia’s current Seltos trim information before requesting the matching 2.0-litre AWD quote.
There is no verified current price gap to assign to the Kia’s extra equipment. Obtain same-province written quotes for the exact vehicles and desired accessories, with delivery, fees, taxes, registration and insurance treated consistently. Compare MSRP with MSRP first, then the complete amounts payable.
The model-year difference may affect local stock or offers, but neither a discount on the Mazda nor a resale premium for the Kia is assumed here.
Fuel is not the strongest reason to choose between them
Mazda Canada’s 2026 CX-30 page lists the GS Kuro at as low as 7.5 L/100 km highway. Kia’s 2027 brochure lists 9.1/7.8/8.5 L/100 km city/highway/combined for its 2.0-litre AWD specification. Compare the same type of rating: Mazda’s highway figure is lower than Kia’s highway figure, but that alone does not establish a combined-consumption winner. The 2026 NRCan guide is another reference for model-year fuel information.
These are standardized ratings, not a prediction of your consumption, and they should not outweigh the seating and equipment your household needs. Check the actual Canadian fuel labels before budgeting.
The verdict
Start with the CX-30 GS Kuro if the engine/automatic combination and its control layout appeal to you after a drive. Start with the Seltos EX Premium if front-seat ventilation, rear-seat comfort and loading convenience are the features your household will use most.
The best answer comes from a passenger-and-luggage test and a complete equipped quote. Avoid buying unused comfort equipment—or choosing the more powerful specification without checking whether you prefer driving it.
