2027 Honda HR-V Sport vs 2027 Subaru Crosstrek Onyx: Daily Comfort or Rough-Road Priorities?

Do you need a small AWD SUV for ordinary daily driving, or does your route regularly include a rough cottage entrance, deep ruts or loose surfaces? That distinction gives the 2027 Honda HR-V Sport and Subaru Crosstrek Onyx a useful reason to share a shortlist. It does not justify calling one universally better in winter.

This Canadian comparison uses the 2027 HR-V Sport AWD and the gasoline 2027 Crosstrek Onyx. Subaru also offers a Hybrid Onyx for 2027; its powertrain, consumption and price must not be substituted for the gas vehicle here. These are specification-based observations, not a personal road-test account.

The specifications that matter here

The HR-V Sport combines a 158-hp, 138-lb-ft 2.0-litre engine, CVT and AWD. It includes a moonroof, heated steering wheel, fabric seats and a six-way manual driver’s seat. Its nine-inch centre screen and wireless phone charging are standard. Honda lists regular-fuel AWD consumption at 9.5/7.8/8.7 L/100 km city/highway/combined. Do not give Sport the EX-L’s parking sensors or leather seating. Honda Canada’s 2027 trim specifications.

Subaru’s gasoline Crosstrek has a 180-hp, 178-lb-ft 2.5-litre engine and CVT. Its 2027 engineering page lists 220 mm of ground clearance and 9.0/7.1 L/100 km city/highway for the non-hybrid powertrain. Subaru Canada’s 2027 engineering information.

The Onyx adds a ten-way power driver’s seat, dual-function X-MODE and Reverse Automatic Braking. Checked October 31, 2026, Subaru Canada’s consumer configurator lists the 2027 gasoline Onyx automatic at C$35,395 MSRP, with Nunavut selected and no added accessories. Freight/PDI, other fees, taxes, licensing, registration and insurance are additional; this is not a fee-inclusive Ontario quote or the Hybrid Onyx price.

Ground clearance is useful only when the route demands it

If the final kilometre to your cottage is the difficult part of the trip, assess that section rather than judging only the highway drive. Look at the depth of ruts, the steepness of the entrance and the surface after rain. Clearance and low-speed traction controls can be more relevant there than an extra convenience feature.

That does not make the Subaru a substitute for an off-road truck. Clearance alone does not tell you whether the bumpers, underbody or tires will clear a particular obstacle, and an electronic drive mode cannot remove every traction limitation. Ask for a demonstration of what the controls change and when they should be used.

For a mostly paved commute and a maintained gravel driveway, the extra capability may see little use. In that case, seating comfort, visibility, price and the way the vehicle responds in traffic deserve at least as much weight.

Do not turn AWD into a winter-braking promise

Both vehicles provide AWD, but the presence of AWD is not a promise of shorter stops on ice. Tire choice and condition remain central to how the vehicle behaves. Budget appropriate winter tires into both quotes instead of spending the entire allowance on trim equipment.

Avoid a showroom comparison that treats a drive-mode label as proof of superiority in every condition. A useful discussion is specific: where do you drive, how often are conditions difficult, and what tire and wheel setup will you actually use?

The driver’s seat is a daily-use difference

The Subaru’s powered adjustment gives you a different way to find a comfortable position than the Honda’s manual seat. Try both with the steering wheel correctly adjusted. Check whether your thighs are supported, your shoulders relax and the pedals are easy to reach without crowding the wheel.

Power adjustment does not automatically guarantee a better seat, and it does not automatically mean memory settings. If the Honda fits you comfortably, its manual mechanism need not be a disadvantage. If it does not, extra engine output or a preferred badge should not distract you from that problem.

Reverse assistance needs a practical demonstration

The Onyx’s Reverse Automatic Braking is a meaningful feature to investigate if you frequently back out of a driveway or parking space. Ask how its warnings and intervention work and when the system can be limited. It is assistance, not permission to reverse without checking.

Try the camera views and sightlines in both vehicles with the driver’s seat in your preferred position. A system that looks clear on a bright showroom screen may feel different in poor weather, and no electronic feature eliminates the need to check for people or obstacles.

Power and fuel: keep the comparison honest

The Subaru has higher published output, but this article does not claim a measured acceleration advantage. Drive both on the same merge lane or hill and judge response, noise and how easy it is to make a smooth speed adjustment.

Subaru’s verified page provides city and highway fuel figures but not a combined figure for this comparison. The published route figures are lower than Honda’s corresponding AWD figures; a combined annual-cost ranking is deliberately omitted rather than calculating an unofficial rating or borrowing the 2026 number. Check the exact vehicle’s Canadian fuel label before making a budget calculation.

Which one should you try first?

Start with the Crosstrek Onyx if ground clearance, its low-speed controls, powered seat adjustment and reversing assistance address needs you can identify. Start with the HR-V Sport if your use is mainly conventional daily driving and its seating, controls and driving response suit you better.

Then fit your child restraints and normal luggage, obtain comparable Canadian quotes and include winter tires. A small SUV that fits your household comfortably is a better purchase than one chosen for a capability you rarely use—or for a fuel number taken from the wrong powertrain.

After settling on the equipment you need, compare the written offers with our vehicle quote comparison guide, keeping vehicle price and borrowing costs separate.
