The 2025 Chevrolet Suburban Z71 combines a three-row family SUV with an off-road-focused equipment package. The important buying decision is not just whether the Z71 looks better: it is whether its hardware suits your plans better than an LT, or whether a comfort-oriented Premier is a better use of the budget.

Models available
The Canadian range includes LS, LT, RST, Z71, Premier and High Country. Z71 is an equipment direction rather than the top luxury trim. The equipment comparison below keeps the longer Suburban body and four-wheel drive consistent; moving to the shorter Tahoe is a separate space-and-budget decision.
Engine and transmission
The 5.3-litre gasoline V8 is standard on Z71. A 6.2-litre V8 is optional, and the updated 3.0-litre Duramax diesel joined the 2025 lineup after initial launch. The diesel is rated at 305 hp and 495 lb-ft and uses a 10-speed automatic. Do not identify the engine from the Z71 badge alone. Chevrolet Canada’s engine announcement.
Compare the actual engine option price, local fuel prices and expected annual kilometres before choosing. A lower consumption rating does not establish the cheapest total ownership cost: purchase price, maintenance requirements and the fuel specified in the owner’s manual matter too.
Z71 equipment, suspension and towing
A Canadian dealer’s 2025 Z71 equipment listing identifies a front skid plate, tow hooks and a two-speed Autotrac transfer case. These are functional differences to check when comparing it with a road-focused trim, not proof that every pictured accessory is included. Canadian 2025 Z71 equipment listing.
Air Ride Adaptive Suspension and Magnetic Ride Control are available on Z71, not equipment to assume from the badge. Air suspension changes ride height; adaptive dampers address a different function. Verify both independently on the build sheet. Canadian suspension details.
For towing, use the rating and payload information for the individual Suburban, with its engine and trailering equipment. A hitch or Z71 badge does not prove that the Max Trailering package is fitted. Passengers, luggage, accessories and trailer tongue weight use payload, so a large family and a loaded trailer need to be assessed together. Do not substitute a Tahoe maximum for a Suburban rating.
Fuel economy
Natural Resources Canada lists the following 2025 Suburban 4WD ratings in L/100 km. These are engine-specific laboratory figures, not consumption measured in our video. They should not be replaced with the two-wheel-drive Suburban or Tahoe figures. NRCan 2025 fuel-consumption data.
| Suburban 4WD engine | City | Highway | Combined |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5.3-litre V8 | 17.1 | 12.6 | 15.1 |
| 6.2-litre V8 | 16.6 | 13.0 | 15.0 |
| 3.0-litre diesel | 11.5 | 9.7 | 10.7 |
At 20,000 km per year, the 5.3-litre’s combined rating works out to about 3,020 litres. Multiply that by your local fuel price for a basic fuel budget. Winter idling, short trips, tires, cargo and towing can change actual consumption substantially. The small difference between the two gasoline combined ratings should not be read as a guarantee that the larger engine will cost less to fuel.
Infotainment and technology
The refreshed cabin has a standard 17.7-inch central screen and an 11-inch driver display. Test the screen and physical controls for your own use rather than judging the system only by its size. Canadian interior announcement.
Safety and driver assistance
The Canadian 2025 announcement lists Super Cruise availability on LT, RST, Premier and High Country—not Z71. Do not select a Z71 expecting that hands-free feature. Other assistance systems also have operating limits and are not substitutes for an attentive driver. Canadian driver-assistance availability.
Canadian trim comparison
Current Canadian manufacturer pricing for these exact 2025 configurations has not been verified as of October 31, 2026. Vehicle prices and price differences are therefore omitted; the chart compares equipment only.
| 2025 Suburban 4WD | Why compare it |
|---|---|
| LT | Leather-appointed front seats, heated front buckets, driver memory and wireless charging |
| Z71 | Skid plate, recovery hooks, all-terrain tires and two-speed transfer case; air suspension optional |
| Premier | Magnetic Ride Control, ventilated front seats, heated second-row buckets and Bose audio |
Equipment comparison: Canadian dealer references for 2025 LT, 2025 Z71 and 2025 Premier; Chevrolet Canada’s suspension distinctions. The listed vehicles may have different options from the vehicle shown in our review. Optional packages remain separate from the base configurations compared above.
Premier’s standard adaptive dampers are confirmed in Chevrolet’s Canadian announcement. Match the options on the actual vehicles before comparing purchase costs; no current manufacturer price difference has been verified.
Is the Z71 the right choice?
Choose the Z71 for the equipment you will use, not simply because it sits above an LT in price. If your priorities are passenger comfort and highway travel, compare the actual LT and Premier builds as well. If you want the Z71 with optional suspension or a different engine, obtain an itemized quote before assuming it remains the less expensive alternative.
Frequently asked questions
Is every Suburban Z71 a diesel?
No. The standard engine is the 5.3-litre gasoline V8. Verify the engine on the specific vehicle.
Does the Z71 automatically have air suspension?
No. Air Ride is available equipment, so confirm it separately rather than inferring it from the trim name.
