2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 ZR2 vs 2027 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4X: Canadian diesel comparison. The useful question is not whether a GMC badge unlocks a fundamentally different kind of trail truck. These redesigned half-tons share substantial off-road hardware and the same standard diesel output. The decision is whether the Sierra’s particular cabin equipment better suits your needs once you compare equipment-matched quotes, or whether the Chevrolet already includes the capabilities and technology you actually want.
Model-year and availability note: Both Canadian manufacturers have announced their 2027 trucks, with arrival anticipated late in 2026. This is a specification-based buying comparison, not a road test or confirmation of local inventory. It compares the regular ZR2 and AT4X, not special-edition accessory packages, and it does not recycle specifications from the outgoing 2026 models or the separately offered heavy-duty trucks.
Start with matching engines
The Canadian model pages identify the 3.0-litre Duramax turbo-diesel as the starting engine for both trims, with a 6.6-litre gasoline V8 available. The diesel produces 305 horsepower and 495 lb-ft of torque; the new V8 produces 481 horsepower and 501 lb-ft. Both use a ten-speed automatic. These are engine ratings, not evidence that the trucks achieve identical acceleration, consumption or towing performance. Chevrolet Canada model details; GMC Canada specifications.
That distinction keeps the quote comparison honest. Comparing a diesel Chevrolet with a V8-equipped GMC bundles an engine decision into the price comparison. First ask for two diesel quotes with the same accessories, then repeat the exercise with the V8 if that is your preference. A large horsepower increase and a small peak-torque difference describe only part of how an engine delivers its performance; they do not establish which will suit your driving without considering use and operating costs.
Similar trail equipment, not a guaranteed identical ride
Both trucks pair a two-inch factory suspension lift with 35-inch mud-terrain tires, front and rear electronically locking differentials, and Multimatic DSSV dampers supplemented by jounce damping. Chevrolet identifies these components for its 2027 ZR2; GMC specifies them for AT4X and adds a standard Baja mode. Those are meaningful mechanical features, not merely cosmetic off-road badges. The shared hardware means the GMC should not be selected simply on the assumption that its badge brings the only serious differential setup. Equally, matching component names do not prove identical suspension tuning, braking distances or cabin noise. Test both on the same broken pavement and highway route when demonstrators become available. Check how readily you can enter the cab, whether the tire noise is acceptable, and whether the truck fits the places you actually park.
Where the GMC cabin differs
The AT4X cabin brings a Timber Mahogany colour scheme, carbon-fibre accents, 14-way power heated, ventilated and massaging front seats, and a 16-speaker Bose system with speakers in the front head restraints. Its panoramic sunroof is standard. Chevrolet lists the panoramic roof as optional on ZR2, making that a concrete equipment difference to price rather than an assumption about brand positioning. Do not confuse those GMC features with a monopoly on modern screens. The ZR2 already includes a front-passenger display alongside its central touchscreen and driver display. GMC also includes a passenger screen on AT4X. A passenger who regularly uses entertainment features may value that arrangement; someone who usually drives alone may not. Try the seats and controls before treating speaker counts, screen measurements or massage functions as a substitute for comfort.
Price the package, not just the badge
At the time of this October 31, 2026 update, exact current Canadian manufacturer-site prices and complete fee bases remain unverified for the diesel 2027 Silverado ZR2 and Sierra AT4X. No numerical starting-price gap is used here. Compare equipment-matched quotes, including the Chevrolet roof or other options you actually want, and keep freight, fees, taxes and incentive conditions visible. Both trim listings include Super Cruise capability with trailering and a three-year OnStar One plan. That does not turn either truck into an autonomous vehicle: driver attention, compatible roads and service conditions still apply. For towing, use the selected truck’s ratings and payload label rather than the biggest number advertised for the entire Silverado or Sierra range. Passengers, accessories and trailer tongue weight all belong in the load calculation.
Which one makes more sense?
Start with ZR2 if the shared off-road equipment is your priority and you want to control the finished price. Start with AT4X if its particular seats, audio system and included panoramic roof are features you would actively use. Neither conclusion requires pretending these close relatives are radically different. Any GMC premium should be justified by equipment you appreciate after comparing equivalent engines and completed quotes, not by the badge alone.
Include tire replacement and diesel operating expenses in the ownership plan. The vehicle ownership budget worksheet provides a written framework for that comparison.
