2027 Ram 1500 REV vs Next-Generation F-150 Lightning: What Canadian Buyers Can Confirm

The 2027 Ram 1500 REV and next-generation Ford F-150 Lightning are worth watching if you want electric propulsion without making every long trip depend entirely on plug-in charging. They are not yet a matched Canadian trim-and-price comparison. This preview separates announced plans from the information still needed before choosing a truck. Canadian manufacturer information was checked October 30, 2026; no driving impressions or delivery promises are implied.

What each manufacturer has actually announced

Ram Canada’s 2027 REV page describes a 92-kWh battery and a 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 powering an onboard generator. Its advertised figures are targets: 1,110 km total range, 663 horsepower, 615 lb-ft, maximum towing of 6,350 kg and maximum payload of 1,179 kg. These are not certified results for a priced Canadian configuration. The page shows preproduction vehicles and describes plug-in charging as well as generator operation.

Ford’s Canadian next-generation Lightning announcement confirms electric-motor propulsion with an onboard generator and an estimated total range exceeding 1,100 km. Exportable electricity is also planned. It does not establish a matched Canadian battery size, trim price or numerical towing rating for this comparison. The current Canadian Lightning FAQ says specific availability dates have not been announced. Accordingly, this article does not assign Ford a 2027 model year or a launch month.

Why the headline range cannot pick a winner

Ram’s target and Ford’s estimate are not a controlled back-to-back test. Comparing the two numbers as though they were certified highway distances would create a precision the evidence does not support. Neither announcement establishes how far your selected truck will travel while towing your trailer through a Canadian winter. Total range also must not be confused with distance driven before the generator starts.

The more useful questions are operational. Can the truck cover your ordinary driving on stored electricity? What happens to fuel use and performance after the initial battery energy is depleted? How does the system behave during a sustained climb with a loaded trailer? Those answers require final specifications and representative testing, not a subtraction between promotional range figures. A larger advertised total range alone does not establish lower running costs.

Build a two-part energy budget

For a future ownership comparison, keep electricity and gasoline as separate cost lines. Record home electricity rates, public charging costs where applicable, and the portion of your driving likely to use each energy source. Do not calculate an annual saving using an assumed electric-only range or an unverified generator fuel-consumption figure. Neither a pure battery-EV cost estimate nor an ordinary gasoline-truck estimate automatically describes this usage pattern.

If you are considering home charging, obtain a site-specific installation quote before treating a charger as a small accessory expense. Ram’s page specifically warns that electrical-system changes may be necessary. Separate the truck purchase, charging equipment and installation in the vehicle ownership budget worksheet. For Ford, wait for the final vehicle’s charging requirements rather than assuming the previous Lightning’s equipment will transfer unchanged.

What needs to be confirmed before a deposit or trade-in

Ask for the exact Canadian model year, trim, battery specification and included equipment in writing. Then obtain the actual purchase terms, including freight, fees, accessories, taxes and any deposit conditions. A refundable expression of interest and a firm order are different commitments; read the document you are being asked to sign. There is no verified matched transaction price here from which to name the cheaper truck.

Use the vehicle quote and total-cost guide once comparable written offers exist. For towing, require configuration-specific ratings and the actual truck’s payload information. A headline maximum is not permission to combine maximum trailer weight, passengers and bed cargo without checking the limits. Also request the new model’s warranty and maintenance documents; existing-model support language is not a substitute for those terms.

Should you wait?

Keep both on a watchlist if generator-backed electric driving addresses a real problem in your routine. Do not sell a usable truck around an unconfirmed Ford delivery date or treat Ram’s targets as a guarantee. If you need a replacement on a fixed schedule, compare vehicles with verifiable Canadian specifications and delivery commitments now, then revisit these two when final configurations and prices make a genuine head-to-head decision possible.
