2027 Ram 2500 Big Horn vs 2026 GMC Sierra 2500HD SLE: Which Gas Crew Cab Fits Your Work—and Your Weekends?

A heavy-duty pickup can be the right tool and the wrong truck at the same time. It might tow the trailer but make every school run awkward, or offer a beautiful dashboard while leaving too little payload for the people and equipment you actually carry.

The 2027 Ram 2500 Big Horn and 2026 GMC Sierra 2500HD SLE approach that balance differently. The GMC puts a large-screen cabin high on the equipment list. The Ram combines a useful driver-assistance baseline with cabin upgrades that need careful option checking. Both deserve a closer look if you want a gasoline Crew Cab 4×4 rather than a diesel.

The decision starts with your load, not the grille badge. Once both trucks can safely do the job, their equipment differences become much more interesting.

Canadian information checked October 31, 2026. This is researched buying analysis, not a back-to-back road test. Ride comfort, cabin noise, acceleration and real-world fuel consumption have not been measured here. The model years are deliberately different; the announced 2027 GMC is discussed separately below.

The short answer

Start with the Sierra SLE if an upgraded dashboard is a priority. Its included centre screen and digital instrument display are a clear attraction without moving to a luxury HD trim. Just do not assume the advertised camera systems or multifunction tailgate come with every SLE.

Start with the Big Horn if its assistance equipment suits your driving. Then decide whether you actually need the optional cabin package. Comparing a basic Ram with a heavily optioned showroom truck is an easy way to misunderstand what you are buying.

Choose neither until the exact truck passes your load calculation. A more attractive screen, grille or payment cannot make up for insufficient payload. That is especially important if your trailer, passengers and work equipment all travel together.

What exactly are we comparing?

These are Canadian-market gasoline, Crew Cab, four-wheel-drive 2500-series trucks: Big Horn for Ram and SLE for GMC. This is not a Cummins-versus-Duramax comparison, a 3500 comparison or a comparison with GMC’s SLE light-duty 1500.

Engine specifications come from Ram Canada’s 2027 capability page and GMC Canada’s 2026 configurator equipment listing. Exact axle ratio, bed, installed options and ratings still need to match the truck on your shortlist.

The horsepower figures are close; the GMC has the higher published torque figure. Neither fact proves that it will be quicker with your trailer or quieter on a long grade. Transmission programming, gearing, load and road conditions also matter. Ten ratios rather than eight describe the hardware—not a measured advantage in every situation.

On a test drive, pay attention to ordinary transitions: pulling away, joining traffic and asking for more speed on a hill. Does the transmission settle comfortably, or does its behaviour irritate you? Do the same route in both trucks where practical. An unloaded demonstration is useful, but it does not reproduce your fully loaded journey.

Why a 2027 Ram against a 2026 GMC?

The 2026 GMC remains a specific, documented buying option rather than an assumed stand-in for its successor. GMC’s 2027 Canadian preview describes a revised gas engine rated at 412 hp, electric power steering and eBoost braking. Those are 2027 developments, not equipment credited to the 2026 SLE here.

That gives the buyer two separate decisions: which of these documented trucks fits now, and whether waiting for the next GMC makes sense. The preview does not establish the exact delivered price, order timing or complete Canadian SLE configuration you would receive.

If you need the truck soon, judge a 2026 against its actual equipment and condition. If your existing truck can stay in service, establish the 2027 order details before committing. An outgoing model is not automatically a bargain, and an announced replacement is not automatically available when you need it.

Exterior and bed: look past the showroom stance

The Big Horn equipment document lists LED headlamps and fog lamps with 18-inch polished wheels. GMC lists 17-inch machined wheels for SLE. These are useful trim distinctions, not grounds for declaring either truck more comfortable or more capable off-road. Ram equipment document, GMC SLE guide.

The bed deserves more attention than the wheel diameter. Ram’s utility guide identifies 6-foot-4-inch and 8-foot boxes for its HD trucks. GMC’s 2026 Canadian cab-and-box selector distinguishes Crew Cab standard- and long-bed choices; the standard-bed selection is approximately 2.09 metres long. Do not interpret “standard” or “shorter bed” as the same physical size across brands.

Before choosing, lay out what normally goes inside: a toolbox against the cab, equipment between the wheel housings, a hitch in the floor and anything you must secure with the tailgate closed. A nominal bed length is not the usable length remaining after those items are installed.

Then try reaching the cargo. Can you safely reach the tie-down you use most often? Will the loading method still work when a trailer is attached? Check the actual step, liner and tailgate fitted to the truck, rather than the accessories on a display vehicle beside it.

For parking, measure the whole truck with mirrors and accessories in their normal positions. Try the turn into your driveway and the parking space at work. We have not established a matched, exact-build dimensional comparison here, so there is no unsupported claim that one is easier to park.

Cabin and infotainment: the SLE’s clearest equipment argument

The GMC SLE includes a 13.4-inch centre display and 12.3-inch driver display. The basic Big Horn equipment document instead lists an 8.4-inch centre screen and 3.5-inch instrument display. The documented Ram’s optional Level 1 Plus package upgrades the centre screen to 12 inches. GMC trim information, Canadian Ram equipment document.

That makes the GMC an obvious first stop if you want a more substantial display layout without constructing an option package around it. It does not establish that its menus are simpler or its screen more readable in every light.

Bring your own phone. Connect it, open the navigation you normally use and make a short call while parked. Check where the phone can sit without blocking a cupholder or sliding into the footwell. Ask which connected features need a subscription after any included period; smartphone compatibility and every connected service are not the same thing.

The driver’s display deserves its own demonstration. Find the information you would want while towing, then return to an ordinary everyday layout. A large display is most useful when the things you need are easy to find—not merely because the diagonal measurement is impressive.

Seating and storage: compare the cabin you will actually buy

The documented Big Horn’s Level 1 Plus package adds a power driver’s seat and dual-zone climate control. Its heated-seat-and-wheel package and premium cloth bucket seats are separately identified options. Those distinctions matter when you compare an attractive stocked truck with an advertised starting configuration. The manufacturer document is used here for equipment, not as a current pricing source.

Do not give the SLE the heated or power-seat specification of the SLT simply because both appear on the same GMC page. Confirm the actual seat adjustment, heating, upholstery and front-seat arrangement before assigning a comfort advantage.

For a family, set the front seats where the adults really sit before trying a child seat or checking rear passenger space. For a work crew, consider boots, winter clothing and the equipment people bring into the cab. A front bench and a bucket-seat console solve different storage problems; neither should be selected just because it photographs better.

Try moving the items you carry every day between the cabin and bed. Where do wet gloves go? Can a passenger reach a charging lead? Can you secure a bag without leaving it loose at someone’s feet? These questions are more revealing than calling either interior “premium” without spending time in it.

Driver assistance and trailering technology: separate included from available

The Ram document lists adaptive cruise with Stop, pedestrian/cyclist emergency braking and front/rear parking sensors. These are meaningful features to check during a demonstration, but they do not replace the driver’s responsibility or guarantee performance in every road or trailer situation.

For GMC SLE, the manufacturer lists additional camera views, MultiPro tailgate and the X31 off-road package as available, not universal SLE equipment. Its standard Traction Select system includes Tow/Haul mode. GMC Canada SLE details.

If a camera feature is important, request a demonstration with the required hardware identified. A truck with a large screen is not automatically equipped to display every advertised trailer view. Check whether your trailer and its dimensions are compatible before treating a feature as part of the purchase decision.

The same practical test applies to a multifunction tailgate: establish clearance with your hitch and accessories before using its different positions. Optional convenience equipment is valuable only when it works with the way you use the truck.

Towing and payload: the numbers that can end the comparison

Ram identifies a standard link-coil rear suspension and an available rear air-suspension system on selected 4×4 models. That tells us something about the design and available equipment; it is not a measured ride verdict or permission to exceed a truck’s rating. Ram capability information.

Neither truck receives a towing trophy here. The advertised maximum for a diesel, a different cab or a 3500 cannot be transferred to these gas Crew Cabs. Even a gas-engine maximum is not automatically the rating of an optioned Big Horn or SLE.

Build a load sheet for each actual truck:

What to verifyWhy it changes the decision
Door-label payload and gross/axle ratingsEquipment installed on the actual truck matters
Occupants and luggageA full cabin consumes load allowance before tools arrive
Accessories, toolbox and hitch hardwarePermanent additions still count
Loaded trailer tongue or pin weightTrailer load is also carried by the truck
Exact towing and hitch limitsCab, bed, axle and hitch configuration must match

Use the trailer’s loaded condition, not just its empty brochure weight. If the arithmetic is close, get the combination weighed and the applicable limits checked before purchase. Payload, axle limits, hitch limits and towing capacity must all be respected; passing one test does not cancel another. For a preliminary payload check, subtract people, cargo, added accessories and hitch hardware not already included in the label allowance, and loaded trailer tongue or pin weight from the truck’s occupant-and-cargo limit. As a hypothetical example—not a rating for either truck—1,500 kg minus 300 kg of occupants, 200 kg of cargo and added equipment excluding hitch hardware, 50 kg of hitch hardware and 350 kg of trailer tongue weight leaves 600 kg. That remaining payload does not establish a safe maximum trailer weight: every other applicable rating must still pass, and the loaded combination should be weighed to verify vehicle and axle loads.

If neither configuration leaves adequate capacity for your normal use, change the truck specification or trailer plan. Do not try to solve that problem with a nicer trim, an air-suspension option or a more optimistic sales description.

Fuel costs and winter use: budget for your duty cycle

The Canadian Ram equipment label explicitly states that heavy-duty fuel-consumption ratings are not applicable. We do not have a comparable measured fuel test for these exact trucks, so there is no invented combined rating or fuel-saving winner.

For your own budget, use consumption records from genuinely comparable use and separate towing kilometres from unloaded driving. The calculation is straightforward: annual kilometres multiplied by litres per 100 km, divided by 100, then multiplied by fuel price. Change the assumptions and see how sensitive the annual bill becomes.

Winter preparation should also match the job. Check appropriate load-rated tires, wheel fitment, cold-weather equipment and storage for wet gear. Four-wheel drive does not remove the need for suitable tires or careful braking distances. If you tow through winter, include the trailer in your preparation rather than treating it as an afterthought.

Maintenance access matters, too. Ask about the schedule for your actual towing and operating conditions, then find out how service appointments fit around work. A truck that earns its keep needs a realistic downtime plan, not just a favourable brochure comparison.

Canadian warranty coverage

The documented 2027 Ram lists three years/60,000 km basic coverage and five years/100,000 km powertrain coverage, whichever limit comes first, with conditions including certain commercial-use exclusions. Ram’s separately advertised 10-year/160,000-km promotion explicitly names eligible 2026 vehicles. It is not assigned to this 2027 Big Horn.

For a retail gasoline Sierra, GM’s 2026 Canadian warranty booklet, which covers Chevrolet, Buick and GMC, gives three years/60,000 km base coverage and five years/100,000 km powertrain coverage, whichever comes first. Different powertrains and qualifying fleet situations have different provisions; do not substitute diesel coverage for this gasoline truck.

Those headline terms are not a reliability prediction. Confirm the applicable booklet, eligibility and warranty start date for the VIN—particularly for a demonstrator or previously placed-in-service vehicle. Also separate factory coverage from an optional protection plan when comparing the paperwork.

Pricing: no unsupported starting-price contest

At the time of writing, comparable current Canadian manufacturer-configurator totals for these exact two builds have not been verified. No dealer advertisement, launch-release price or vehicle sticker total is substituted here. The current Ram model site and GMC model site are the starting points for a fresh manufacturer build.

That prevents a numeric value verdict, but it does not prevent a useful equipment decision. First define the minimum truck you would accept: seating arrangement, required assistance features, towing equipment, bed and any comfort essentials. Then compare equivalent completed configurations, with freight, fees and taxes treated consistently.

Keep the purchase price, borrowing cost and trade-in separate. A lower payment can reflect a longer term rather than a better deal. Our guide to comparing complete vehicle quotes helps organize those differences without allowing the monthly payment to hide them.

Verdict: two sensible shortlists, one non-negotiable load check

The Sierra SLE earns the first look for the screen-focused buyer. Its included display layout is the strongest clear equipment distinction here. Confirm the seats and any camera or tailgate options rather than assuming the rest of the truck matches a high-trim demonstration.

The Big Horn earns the first look for buyers drawn to its documented assistance baseline. Be deliberate about cabin upgrades: the optioned truck that impresses you should be the truck you actually compare, not a bundle of features mentally attached to a basic configuration.

For a family towing a trailer, the winner is the properly rated build that accommodates the people and equipment comfortably. For a working owner, bed usability, payload, service access and downtime may outrank either dashboard. For someone who can wait, the 2027 GMC deserves a separate exact-configuration check before a 2026 purchase—not assumptions borrowed from a preview.

The best choice is the truck that meets the whole job without making you pay for equipment you do not use. Start with the load sheet, finish with the completed configuration, and let the badge come somewhere in between.
