2027 Lexus GX 550 Signature vs 2027 Toyota Land Cruiser Premium: Canadian Seating, Fuel and Towing Choices

A Land Cruiser with the Premium Package or an entry-package Lexus GX: which is the smarter Canadian buy? The 2027 Toyota Land Cruiser Premium and 2027 Lexus GX 550 Signature answer different questions. Toyota directs the spending toward an equipped five-seat cabin and trail hardware. Lexus offers a third row and a higher published towing ceiling. The badge alone does not tell you which one fits your household.

This is a Canadian specification-based comparison, not a back-to-back driving test. Both 2027 models are documented in Canadian manufacturer material. Signature means the GX’s base package here; it does not mean Overtrail, Luxury or Executive. Likewise, the Toyota is the Land Cruiser grade with the Premium Package, not the 1958.

Seven seats or five: settle this first

Lexus’s 2027 Canadian product summary lists seven seats, 349 hp, 479 lb-ft, 13.5 L/100 km combined and 4,111 kg of towing capacity for the base GX 550. Signature uses NuLuxe upholstery and 20-inch wheels; heated and ventilated front seats are standard. Cargo space behind the third row is listed at 292 litres. Package-specific equipment and ratings must not be substituted from other GX versions.

Toyota’s Canadian 2027 specification sheet lists five seats and 10.1 L/100 km combined. Premium adds leather, heated and ventilated rear seats, a head-up display and 20-inch wheels. Toyota’s Canadian launch announcement confirms the hybrid’s 326 system hp and 465 lb-ft, plus a 6,000-pound towing rating. The Land Cruiser grade includes a front stabilizer disconnect; the rear differential can be locked.

If a sixth passenger is a genuine recurring need, the Lexus has a useful advantage before you discuss luxury. But seven seat belts are not the same as seven comfortable travelling positions plus luggage. Bring the people who will occupy the third row, put the second row in its normal position, and load your weekend bags. A third row that works for school pickups may not work for an entire cottage trip.

For a household of five, the Toyota’s rear-seat comfort equipment may matter more often than two additional places. Try those seats with child restraints installed where required. Heated or ventilated cushions are not a substitute for appropriate restraint fit, and a family should not pay for features its normal seating arrangement prevents it from using.

The fuel difference is worth calculating

At an illustrative 20,000 kilometres a year, the published combined ratings imply 2,700 litres for the GX and 2,020 litres for the Land Cruiser—a difference of 680 litres. These are budgeting calculations, not predictions for every owner. Multiply each vehicle’s litre total by the price of the fuel grade specified in its owner’s manual, then compare the two costs. Winter temperatures, short trips, highway speed and trailers can all change the result.

That calculation gives a high-mileage buyer a practical reason to investigate the Toyota. It does not establish that the Toyota is cheaper overall: negotiated purchase price, finance charges, insurance, winter tires and eventual resale still belong in the worksheet. Nor does hybrid power make the Toyota a plug-in vehicle; this comparison does not assume home charging or an electric-only commuting range.

Towing capability is not permission to ignore payload

The GX’s higher published trailer limit makes it the more relevant starting point when the loaded trailer exceeds the Toyota’s rating. A trailer below either headline limit still needs checking against the actual vehicle’s loading label, hitch limits and owner’s manual. Passengers, luggage, accessories and trailer tongue weight consume carrying capacity together.

Ask for the intended vehicle’s documentation before paying a deposit, rather than relying on a number from a different package. A smaller trailer with a heavily loaded family can create a different constraint than a larger trailer behind a lightly occupied SUV. Neither maximum rating proves which vehicle feels more settled on your route.

Do not confuse luxury spending with trail equipment

The Toyota’s named off-road hardware gives this particular pairing a clear trail-equipment argument; do not silently upgrade the Signature into an Overtrail. Equally, hardware is only part of preparation. Check the installed tire specification, recovery provisions, spare access and permitted trail conditions. Twenty-inch wheels are a reminder to price suitable replacement and winter tires before choosing either vehicle.

Which would we shortlist?

Choose the GX Signature shortlist for recurring extra passengers or a towing requirement that the Toyota cannot meet. Start with the Land Cruiser Premium when five seats suffice and you value rear-passenger equipment, the lower published consumption figure and its specified trail hardware. Then verify the exact build and take the same family-and-luggage test in both. There is no need to award a universal winner when the decisive requirements are this different.
