The 2027 Ford F-450 XL pickup and 2026 GMC Sierra 3500 HD Pro dually offer two different routes to a diesel work truck. Neither needs a luxury interior to be useful, and neither should be chosen solely from the biggest advertised towing number. The better comparison looks at the exact pickup configuration, the towing equipment already included and the hardware your service routine must support.
This Canadian comparison selects Crew Cab four-wheel-drive pickups with dual rear wheels and long beds: Ford’s eight-foot box and GMC’s Long Box. The Ford uses its included 6.7-litre high-output Power Stroke and ten-speed automatic. The GMC target uses the optional 6.6-litre Duramax and ten-speed automatic, with Canadian dealer VIN 1GT4USEY1TF315648 providing an installed-configuration witness. The Ford is a selected build, not a claimed matching inventory VIN. Neither vehicle is being treated as a chassis-cab.
The different years are intentional
GMC has announced a revised 2027 Sierra HD with changed engines, electric power steering and eBoost braking. This comparison uses the documented 2026 Pro rather than assuming that the refreshed Canadian configuration is unchanged. If your purchase can wait, compare the final 2027 order separately; its announced equipment is not part of the 2026 truck here.
F-450 hardware deserves a working demonstration
Ford’s Canadian F-450 XL specification lists a wide-track front suspension with an extended axle on 4×4, 19.5-inch forged polished aluminum wheels and included fifth-wheel/gooseneck preparation. It lists the trailer brake controller as optional. The XL cabin remains work-oriented, with vinyl front seating, manual climate control and an 8-inch SYNC 4 display.
That front-axle specification is a reason to assess manoeuvring carefully, not an excuse to invent a turning-radius advantage. Arrange a demonstration that reflects your yard, parking and trailer routine. Check the whole combination’s path, not just the pickup’s front wheels. If the truck will spend much of its time entering narrow sites, a useful demonstration is more valuable than a brochure adjective.
The wheel specification also deserves a conversation with the shop that will maintain it. Ask for appropriate tire options for the exact axle loads, operating seasons and routes, together with installed replacement quotes. Do not assume a particular wheel diameter is automatically cheaper, smoother or better in every condition. Those are ownership questions to answer with suitable products and the actual truck.
GMC starts with a different towing-equipment baseline
GMC Canada’s Pro specification includes a trailering package, trailering mirrors and trailer brake controller, plus a 7-inch infotainment display with wireless phone integration. The Duramax is an available engine rather than the standard gas powertrain. The selected Canadian Pro record specifies dual rear wheels, 17-inch painted-steel wheels and LT235/80R17E all-terrain tires.
The controller difference is a useful reminder that a truck’s size does not tell you whether its finished towing setup is complete. Ask each dealer to identify the hitch, preparation, wiring and brake-control equipment on the proposed vehicle. Included preparation is not the same as a fitted hitch, and a controller does not establish that every other component your trailer needs is present.
Keep installed conveniences separate from the Pro badge
The GMC witness has vinyl bench seating and separately lists a Convenience Package, spray-on bedliner and additional equipment. The package includes an assisted power-lock/release tailgate, bed lighting and mirror-related conveniences. Those inventory details should be checked against final factory paperwork; they are not proof that every Pro includes the same options. Nor is the listing a guarantee that this truck is still available.
For a work truck, decide early which surfaces and controls suit the people using it. Try cab access in work clothing, check mirror adjustment with the intended trailer and consider how equipment will be secured in the bed. A straightforward interior can be the right choice, but it should be a deliberate one—not a compromise discovered after concentrating only on engine output.
Approve the load before choosing the badge
Obtain the actual payload label and manufacturer towing information for the final configuration. Include occupants, cargo, hitch hardware and loaded trailer hitch weight. Do not treat a model-wide maximum, the diesel option or the number in the model name as approval for your combination. This comparison does not assign a capacity winner without that evidence.
Put the F-450 XL on the shortlist when its distinct hardware and included hitch preparation address the operation. Consider the Sierra 3500 HD Pro when its verified load limits and standard trailer-control equipment fit the job with a useful optioned work interior. Compare completed builds and practical service requirements, not an incomplete base price against a loaded inventory example.
For the F-450 and Sierra dually, obtain service-shop tire quotes and list the finished hitch hardware before judging the purchase budget. The ownership worksheet keeps those costs distinct from the vehicle payment.
