2026 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport vs 2026 Chevrolet Colorado Z71: Canadian Bed, Towing and Value Comparison

A longer cargo box and integrated trailer controls solve different problems. That is the useful starting point for the Canadian 2026 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport automatic and Chevrolet Colorado Z71 4WD. Before comparing badges, decide whether the truck must carry your awkward cargo or pull it in a trailer.

Scope: Tacoma TRD Sport with the six-foot bed and eight-speed automatic, versus Colorado Z71 Crew Cab Short Box 4WD. This is a Canadian specification-based buying comparison researched October 30, 2026, not a back-to-back road test. No ride, reliability or resale winner is claimed.

Start with the load that does not fit your current vehicle

Toyota lists a six-foot bed for this TRD Sport; its eight-speed automatic powertrain produces 278 hp and 317 lb-ft. The Sport package includes 18-inch wheels, sport-tuned suspension and a 12.3-inch instrument display. That display is separate from the standard eight-inch centre touchscreen. Chevrolet’s Canadian Z71 uses a short box, a 310-hp, 430-lb-ft TurboMax engine and an eight-speed automatic. Its centre screen is 11.3 inches. Confirm the automatic locking rear differential and trailer equipment on the truck’s itemized build rather than assuming the trim badge covers every configuration. Measure the item that dictates the purchase: a work case, bicycle, mobility device or camping box. Check the usable floor with the tailgate closed, space around the wheel housings and the attachment points needed to secure it. Add the toolbox or tonneau cover you intend to install before deciding the bed is large enough.

A longer bed deserves priority if it eliminates the need to bring a trailer for routine jobs. Conversely, buying length you seldom use can make your daily parking problem harder. Take both trucks to the same kind of parking space and test access around the closed vehicle, rather than relying on the broad midsize label.

Trailer equipment is part of the purchase price

Chevrolet lists an Advanced Trailering Package with a receiver, electrical connection, integrated brake controller and Trailering App. Confirm that equipment in the exact Z71 quote, including any package requirements. Chevrolet also publishes a 7,700-lb maximum available trailering rating; that is not a guarantee for every configuration or loading condition. Check the Z71 configuration and equipment.

Toyota’s Canadian equipment table lists a heavy-duty hitch receiver, but adds the integrated trailer brake controller with Sport+ rather than the regular Sport package compared here. Do not copy Sport+ or Sport Premium equipment onto a Sport quote. Toyota package distinctions.

For a trailer purchase, bring its loaded weight and braking requirements to the dealer. Have the exact truck’s towing allowance, gross combined limit and required hardware confirmed in writing. Passengers, accessories, cargo and tongue weight all belong in the loading calculation; the door-label payload is more useful than a generic maximum.

The Chevrolet therefore deserves an early inspection if integrated trailer controls are central to your use. That is an equipment-based recommendation, not a claim that it is the better towing vehicle on the road. If the Toyota meets your load requirements, include any necessary additional equipment in its quote before judging the price difference.

Avoid paying for the wrong Toyota package

The Canadian launch table distinguishes TRD Sport, Sport+ and Sport Premium. Sport+ adds equipment including a heated steering wheel and power-adjustable front seats; Sport Premium goes further with ventilated front seats and a larger centre screen. Those names should remain separate when shopping. Toyota’s December 17, 2025 launch announcement.

Write a short list of non-negotiable cabin features before your appointment. Ask the salesperson to demonstrate them on the actual vehicle, not a more expensive truck beside it. Then sit in the rear with the front seat adjusted for your regular driver. A vehicle can pass the cargo test and still be a poor fit for the people who travel with you.

On the test drive, use comparable roads and check low-speed response, visibility when turning, parking-camera usefulness and control reach. A sport-oriented trim description is not evidence that you will prefer its ride on your commute.

Canadian price references, with their limits attached

Checked October 31, 2026, Toyota Canada’s Ontario configurator priced the 2026 Tacoma 4×4 Double Cab automatic with the TRD Sport package and six-foot bed at C$48,895 base MSRP plus C$3,080 for the package: C$51,975 before freight/PDI, fees and taxes. This is the non-hybrid TRD Sport, not Sport+ or Sport Premium. Licensing, insurance, extra-cost paint and added accessories are also excluded.

Colorado pricing is not shown here because the exact configuration and fee basis have not been confirmed. Use Chevrolet Canada’s configurator to build the Z71 with the equipment you need, then request an itemized quote for your province.

Obtain two same-day, itemized quotes in your province. Include required towing hardware, paint, bed protection and winter wheels, and keep trade-in value and financing separate until the truck prices are clear.

For fuel budgeting, use the current EnerGuide label for each exact configuration. This comparison does not transfer a generic Tacoma or Colorado rating to these trims. As an illustration only, each 1.0 L/100 km difference represents 200 litres over 20,000 km; multiply by your own fuel-price assumption. Towing and winter use can materially change actual consumption.

Which truck should you inspect first?

Start with Tacoma TRD Sport when its longer bed addresses a frequent load requirement and you do not need to move up a package to get your essential cabin equipment. Start with Colorado Z71 when the listed integrated trailer equipment and higher published engine torque better match your shortlist. Let actual load limits, family fit and complete quotes make the final decision.
