For many families, this decision should begin with a head count rather than a horsepower comparison. The 2026 Toyota Sienna XSE AWD seats seven; the 2026 Honda Odyssey Touring seats eight. If eight occupied seats are a regular requirement, this exact Sienna configuration cannot solve it. If seven is sufficient, Toyota’s hybrid powertrain and AWD create a different set of benefits to weigh against the Honda’s seating and entertainment equipment.
Those seating configurations are confirmed in Toyota Canada’s 2026 Sienna product summary and Honda Canada’s 2026 Odyssey specification PDF. This Canadian buying guide was checked October 30, 2026. It compares the standard XSE AWD—not an XSE with the extra Technology package—and Canadian Touring specifications, not a similarly named U.S. trim. No back-to-back test drive is claimed.
The seating plan comes first
Toyota’s XSE AWD has second-row long-slide captain’s chairs. Honda specifies Magic Slide second-row seating. These are different cabin layouts, and a useful showroom visit should include a demonstration of the exact seating configurations you expect to use. Draw a simple seating plan for an ordinary weekday and another for your busiest family trip. Include the people who need help getting in, the seats occupied by child restraints and the route to the third row. Then test those arrangements with your own equipment. Follow both the vehicle and child-restraint instructions; do not assume that a sliding seat can be moved or occupied in every configuration.
An eighth seating position can be valuable for an extra family member or carpool passenger. But counting places is only the first step: check comfort, access and where everyone’s belongings will go. Conversely, if the eighth seat would almost never be used, it should not automatically outweigh the other differences.
Hybrid AWD versus V6 front-wheel drive
The Sienna uses a 2.5-litre hybrid system with 245 combined horsepower, an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission and electronic on-demand AWD. The Odyssey Touring has a 280-hp 3.5-litre V6, ten-speed automatic and front-wheel drive. Sources: Toyota Canada’s 2026 Sienna product summary; Honda Canada’s 2026 Odyssey specification PDF.
The power figures do not establish which will feel better with your family aboard. Arrange a normal test drive that includes the traffic and highway access you regularly encounter. Evaluate response, cabin noise and how naturally each powertrain behaves at the speeds you use, rather than assuming the higher published output wins every practical question.
Likewise, AWD is a drivetrain feature, not a complete winter plan. Include suitable tires, local conditions and the manufacturer’s operating guidance in the decision. This article does not claim that one van stops better on snow or that front-wheel drive makes the other unusable in winter.
Put the fuel difference into the family budget
Toyota lists 6.8 city / 6.7 highway / 6.8 combined L/100 km for Sienna AWD. Honda lists 12.2 / 8.5 / 10.6 for Odyssey Touring. Sources: Toyota Canada’s 2026 Sienna product summary; Honda Canada’s 2026 Odyssey specification PDF.
At an illustrative 20,000 km annually, the combined ratings imply 1,360 litres for the Toyota and 2,120 for the Honda. The calculated difference is 760 litres. At an assumed $1.60 per litre, that represents $1,216 per year. These are budgeting calculations from standardized ratings, not measured family-trip consumption or guaranteed savings.
The city-rating gap is substantially larger than the highway gap. A school-run-heavy week therefore deserves a different discussion from a household whose mileage is mostly highway travel. Use your own annual distance and driving mix, and leave room for winter, traffic and changing fuel prices rather than treating the illustrative dollar figure as a promise.
Entertainment and convenience: check the package boundary
The XSE AWD has a 12.3-inch main touchscreen, 12-speaker JBL audio, four-zone climate control and 18-inch wheels. Toyota’s additional XSE Technology package supplies rear entertainment, a digital rearview mirror and a 1,500-watt outlet, among other equipment. The FWD XSE’s 20-inch wheels should not be copied into this AWD comparison, and Platinum’s fridge/vacuum are not XSE features. Source: Toyota Canada’s 2026 trim announcement.
Canadian Odyssey Touring includes CabinWatch, CabinTalk, a 12.8-inch rear entertainment screen, ventilated front seats, heated steering wheel and a hands-free tailgate. Source: Honda Canada’s 2026 Odyssey specification PDF.
If rear entertainment is a must-have, price the Toyota with the relevant package before comparing it with Touring. If your passengers normally use their own devices, ask whether the built-in system adds enough convenience to justify its cost. Test the connections and controls with the devices you actually own; a screen in the roof is not the same thing as a working entertainment plan.
For daily convenience, try the doors and tailgate in a parking space resembling your own. Load the stroller, sports bags and groceries with the third row occupied. This guide does not compare maximum cargo figures that may use different seat arrangements or measurement methods. A family van needs to fit the family and the luggage at the same time.
Compare complete quotes, not different price definitions
Ask for written Canadian quotes on specific vehicles. If you need the Sienna Technology package, include it explicitly. Itemize freight, fees, taxes, paint, accessories and winter-tire costs, and keep any trade-in value clear. Neither a manufacturer MSRP nor an advertised payment alone tells you the full cost of the required configuration.
There is no verified purchase-price winner here because matched current quotes were not established. The fuel example can inform the ownership budget, but it should not hide a difference in financing cost or convince you to buy a seating arrangement that does not work. Confirm the actual vehicle’s equipment and availability before making plans around it.
The decision in one sentence
Choose your seating requirement first: the Odyssey Touring is the eight-seat candidate in this pair; the Sienna XSE AWD is the seven-seat hybrid/AWD candidate with materially lower published fuel consumption. Once both meet the family’s non-negotiables, let the loading test, equipment needs and complete quotes make the final decision.
