2026 Ford F-150: Use the Trailer Connection Checklist and Light Check

The F-150 can run a trailer-light sequence so you can inspect the lamps without asking someone else to operate each switch. Its touchscreen also provides a connection checklist. Both are useful checks—not proof that the hitch, trailer brakes or loaded weights are correct.

This guide follows the Connecting a Trailer section of Ford’s 2026 F-150 Canada/United States owner’s manual, printed pages 429–432. It covers the touchscreen checklist and lighting test, not hitch installation, brake-controller calibration or backing-assist setup.

Complete the physical connection first

Use the instructions supplied with your hitch, coupler and other towing accessories for installation, adjustment and locking. Work in a safe area clear of traffic, with the truck in Park and the parking brake applied. If the engine is running, remain outdoors. Do not begin a walkaround while the truck or trailer can move unexpectedly.

Ford requires a properly fitting wiring connector compatible with the truck and trailer functions. Check the connector and cable for visible damage, corrosion or a routing problem; do not probe terminals or improvise a wiring repair. Never splice trailer lamp wiring into the truck’s tail-lamp wiring—Ford warns that this can damage the electrical system and cause a fire.

Follow the hitch manufacturer’s safety-chain instructions. Ford specifies crossing the chains beneath the coupler, leaving enough slack for tight turns without dragging on the ground, and attaching them to the hitch’s frame or hook retainers—not the bumper. Fully close any hook latch. These checks do not replace the accessory manufacturer’s complete coupling procedure.

Open the connection checklist

  1. On the touchscreen, select Features.
  2. Choose Towing.
  3. Open Connection Checklist.
  4. Work through the displayed checks against the actual trailer. Complete the physical task before treating an item as checked; a screen selection cannot confirm that a latch or safety connection is secure.

Keep the truck and trailer within their applicable loaded-weight, payload, axle and hitch limits. Ford also says not to tow until the new truck has travelled at least 1,600 km. A completed checklist does not override those limits or the break-in requirement.

Run the trailer lighting sequence

  1. With the trailer properly connected and the vehicle safely secured, open Features → Towing → Trailer Light Check.
  2. Select Start.
  3. Walk around the trailer from a safe position and watch the lamps through the sequence. Look for lamps that do not illuminate, the wrong side responding or unusual flickering. Do not rely only on the truck display.
  4. Resolve any lighting fault before towing. If you cannot establish that the required lamps work correctly, have the trailer wiring and equipment checked by a qualified installer or repairer.

A functioning brake lamp is not a test of the trailer’s wheel brakes. This sequence does not set brake-controller gain, verify breakaway operation, check tire condition or establish towing capacity. Those remain separate parts of preparing the combination for travel.

If the truck does not recognize the trailer

Ford’s recognition procedure starts with the trailer and compatible wiring connector attached, the vehicle switched on and a trailer profile set up using the touchscreen. If recognition does not occur, the manual says to press and hold the brake pedal for a few seconds. Do this only while safely stationary and secured.

If it still is not recognized, recheck the connection and displayed message rather than treating a successful light test as a workaround. Trailer profiles, blind-spot trailer settings and backing-assist calibration serve different purposes; follow the instructions for the features actually fitted. Do not invent dimensions, ignore an error or assume another trailer’s saved settings are suitable.

Before you pull away

Confirm the physical coupling, safety connections and lighting checks are complete, the relevant trailer profile is correct, and no unresolved warning remains. Follow the trailer and hitch instructions for the remaining departure checks. If the electrical or mechanical connection is uncertain, do not tow until it has been resolved.
