2024 Toyota Highlander Hybrid XLE AWD

The 2024 Toyota Highlander Hybrid XLE AWD sits between the entry hybrid and the more equipment-heavy Limited. Its appeal is the combination of hybrid efficiency, three-row seating and everyday convenience features without automatically moving to the highest trim.

Check the VIN and completed recall repairs with Toyota before carrying passengers. Transport Canada recall 2026427 covers certain 2021–2025 Highlander and Highlander Hybrid vehicles whose second-row recliners may not lock properly, allowing seatbacks to move in a crash. For affected vehicles awaiting repair, Toyota recommends not carrying passengers in the second-row seats until recall repairs are complete. Dealers replace the recliner-assembly springs. This campaign replaces recall 2026101; ask Toyota to confirm what the individual VIN still requires, including any previous repairs.

A separate notice, Transport Canada recall 2025694, includes certain 2024 Highlander Hybrids with an improperly installed third-row centre seat-belt upper anchor bolt. The belt could loosen or detach in a crash. For an affected vehicle awaiting this repair, Toyota advises not carrying a passenger in the third-row centre seat until recall repairs are complete. The dealer replaces the upper anchor bolt. Confirm each campaign’s applicability and repair completion separately; these notices concern different seating positions.

Models available

The Canadian hybrid choices include LE, XLE, XLE Nightshade, Limited and Platinum. Regular XLE and Nightshade should not be treated as the same seating configuration: Toyota’s matrix lists eight seats for regular XLE and seven for Nightshade. Canadian 2024 product summary.

Hybrid powertrain

The Highlander Hybrid combines a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine with an E-CVT and an electronically controlled AWD system using a rear electric motor. Published total system output is 243 hp. It is not the gasoline Highlander’s 2.4-litre turbo and eight-speed combination. Toyota Canada’s exact-year powertrain specifications.

Fuel economy

NRCan rates the 2024 Highlander Hybrid AWD configuration applicable to LE/XLE at 6.7 L/100 km city, 6.8 highway and 6.7 combined. Limited/Platinum has a separate city rating, so its row should not silently replace the XLE row. NRCan 2024 guide.

At 20,000 km annually, 6.7 combined represents approximately 1,340 litres. For context, the gas Highlander AWD’s 9.9 combined rating works out to 1,980 litres—a 640-litre difference on the same calculation. Apply your own fuel price, and remember that this is a comparison of standardized ratings rather than consumption measured in our video.

Interior and practicality

XLE adds SofTex upholstery, a heated steering wheel, a moonroof, power-adjustable front passenger seat and wireless charging over LE. Its power liftgate gains a kick sensor for 2024. Canadian XLE equipment changes.

If considering Nightshade or Limited, decide whether second-row captain’s chairs are worth giving up the middle seating position. Styling or extra screens cannot compensate if the vehicle no longer accommodates everyone you need to carry.

Infotainment and connectivity

The product summary lists an 8-inch multimedia screen for regular Hybrid XLE, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and six speakers. The larger 12.3-inch screen and JBL system belong to the higher specification, not automatically to XLE. 2024 hybrid technology matrix.

Pair your phone and test the features you use most often. Connected-service trials are separate from basic phone projection, so confirm what remains active on a previously registered example. Do not price a used car as though every original trial starts again when ownership changes.

Safety and towing

Toyota lists Safety Sense 2.5+ and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert across the lineup. These are assistance systems, not autonomous driving. The hybrid’s published towing rating is 3,500 lb, rather than the gas model’s 5,000 lb. Confirm the actual vehicle’s equipment, loading limits and hitch installation before towing. Choosing a trim

Compare the real condition and fitted equipment of available vehicles before treating the original trim hierarchy as a buying verdict.

Is this the Grand Highlander Hybrid?

No. The regular Highlander is a separate model; its specifications should not be swapped with Grand Highlander figures.

Does XLE Nightshade keep the regular XLE seating layout?

No. The Canadian product summary distinguishes the regular eight-seat XLE from the seven-seat Nightshade configuration.
