The 2024 Hyundai IONIQ 6 Preferred Long Range is the sedan-shaped alternative to Hyundai’s IONIQ 5. For Canadian buyers, the important distinction is between rear-wheel drive and AWD: both use the Long Range name, but their output, price and rated range differ.

Models available
Hyundai’s Canadian 2024 model summary lists Preferred Long Range and the available Ultimate package, with RWD and AWD configurations. Ultimate describes added equipment; it is not a substitute for checking the drivetrain. Hyundai Canada 2024 IONIQ 6 summary.
Electric powertrain
The published Long Range battery capacity is 77.4 kWh. RWD output is 225 hp, while the dual-motor AWD version is rated at 320 hp. A heat pump and battery preconditioning are included in the Canadian equipment summary. Canadian 2024 powertrain information.
Range and charging
Wheel size is essential when comparing range. NRCan lists these 2024 configurations with 18-inch wheels; do not transfer their ratings to an Ultimate car on 20-inch wheels.
| 2024 Long Range configuration | NRCan rated range | Combined electricity use |
|---|---|---|
| RWD, 18-inch wheels | 581 km | 14.9 kWh/100 km |
| AWD, 18-inch wheels | 509 km | 17.4 kWh/100 km |
Source: NRCan 2024 Fuel Consumption Guide. The 72 km rated difference is a useful reminder that the additional motor is not a range upgrade. Weather, speed and heating use can reduce actual distance between charges.
Using those combined figures, 20,000 km corresponds to approximately 2,980 kWh for RWD or 3,480 kWh for AWD—a 500 kWh difference before assigning an electricity price. Use your own mix of home and public charging rates rather than assuming every kilometre will be charged at the cheapest overnight rate.
Check the charging arrangement before purchase, especially if parking is shared or an electrical installation is needed. Also confirm public-station compatibility and any required equipment for the specific car. A high-power station label is not a guarantee of the vehicle’s sustained charging speed.
Interior and practicality
The Canadian summary identifies cloth seating and 18-inch wheels for the regular configuration, with leatherette and 20-inch wheels available through Ultimate. Added equipment includes options such as ventilated front seats and a head-up display; confirm the installed options on the individual vehicle’s build sheet. Canadian equipment summary.
Spend time checking the sedan’s rear-seat access and headroom with your usual passengers. Load bulky items through the trunk opening rather than judging practicality from exterior dimensions alone. If you regularly carry tall cargo, compare the IONIQ 5’s loading arrangement directly before choosing the sleeker body style.
Infotainment and connectivity
The model summary lists a 12.3-inch touchscreen and 12.3-inch instrument display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Bring your phone and cable to check how the connection works, and verify which connected-service trials remain active on a used example. 2024 infotainment specifications.
Safety and driver assistance
Have the seller identify the fitted assistance and camera systems, then demonstrate their warnings and settings. Do not assume an Ultimate promotional image describes every Preferred. Assistance systems still require an attentive driver; choose winter tires based on conditions rather than treating AWD as a substitute for braking grip.

| 2024 Preferred Long Range | Starting MSRP | Extra cost | Main change |
|---|---|---|---|
| RWD | $54,999 | Reference | Single-motor configuration. |
| AWD | $58,299 | +$3,300 | Dual-motor configuration with higher output. |

Choosing a configuration
Start with RWD if rated range and a lower purchase price are your main priorities. Compare AWD if the additional driven axle and output are important enough to justify its price and energy-use differences. Then decide on Ultimate by trying the specific features, not simply by assuming the most expensive configuration is the best fit.
Does Preferred Long Range automatically mean AWD?
No. Confirm the drivetrain from the vehicle documentation; the name is used across configurations.
Can I use the 581 km rating for any IONIQ 6?
No. That rating belongs to the 2024 Long Range RWD configuration with 18-inch wheels, not every drivetrain or wheel combination.
