2023 Toyota Prius Prime XSE

The 2023 Toyota Prius Prime XSE sits between SE and XSE Premium in the redesigned plug-in hybrid range. It is a useful middle-ground choice if you want more cabin equipment than SE but do not need every parking, audio and convenience feature of the top model.

Models available

Canadian Prius Prime grades are SE, XSE and XSE Premium, all front-wheel drive. The AWD specification of the regular Canadian Prius should not be transferred to Prime. Toyota Canada launch announcement.

Plug-in hybrid powertrain

The system combines a 2.0-litre four-cylinder with electric propulsion for 220 hp. XSE shares this output with the other Prime grades; choosing Premium does not buy a stronger engine. Canadian 2023 product summary.

Electric range and charging

Toyota’s launch estimate was 64 km of electric range for XSE and XSE Premium, compared with 72 km for SE. The battery is 13.6 kWh. Toyota estimated about eleven hours on 120V or four hours on Level 2 under ideal conditions. These are manufacturer estimates, not range or charging results from our video. Think about the distance between opportunities to plug in, not just your total weekly distance. A short daily commute with overnight charging is a different use case from frequent long trips without reliable charging access. Cold weather, cabin heating and speed can reduce electric distance.

When shopping used, ask for a charging demonstration and check that the included cable is present and undamaged. Confirm a suitable electrical installation with a qualified electrician if needed. Do not base an ownership-cost calculation on electric driving unless you realistically expect to charge regularly.

Interior and practicality

XSE has five seats, SofTex upholstery, heated front and rear seats, a power driver’s seat and a fixed glass roof. Front-seat ventilation is reserved for XSE Premium. Canadian equipment matrix.

Try both rows with the front seat set for the usual driver. Check head clearance when entering and sitting, the view of the instruments through the steering wheel, and how your normal luggage fits beneath the hatch. A feature-rich trim is not automatically a better fit for every body size or cargo routine.

Infotainment and safety

Canadian XSE has a 12.3-inch touchscreen with six speakers, while XSE Premium adds eight-speaker JBL audio. Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is included. The Canadian 2023 launch MSRPs below were checked October 29, 2026. Freight/PDI, air-conditioning tax, dealer charges, sales tax, registration and options are excluded. These historical figures are not current used-car prices or the reviewed vehicle’s invoice; no rebate has been deducted.

Choosing a trim

SE deserves a comparison if electric distance and purchase price are the priorities. XSE makes more sense when its cabin features will be used regularly. Premium should be judged by its specific additions, not the assumption that the most expensive Prime is automatically the most efficient.

Is Prius Prime XSE all-wheel drive?

No. The Canadian 2023 Prime range is front-wheel drive; it should not be confused with the regular Prius AWD.
