2026 Ford F-150 Multi-Access Tailgate: Open the Swing Gate and Check Trailer Clearance

The F-150’s centre swing gate lets you reach into the bed without lowering the whole tailgate. That can be helpful with a trailer attached, but it does not mean the gate will clear every jack or hitch. Check the space before releasing it, then control its movement yourself.

This guide follows the Multi-Access Tailgate section of Ford’s 2026 F-150 Canada/United States owner’s manual, printed pages 111–116. Use it only on a truck equipped with that tailgate; a conventional tailgate does not have the same centre-gate controls.

Two openings, two conditions

The full tailgate must be closed before the swing gate can open. The swing gate must be fully closed before the full tailgate can operate. If one section refuses to open, check the other section first rather than pulling harder or repeatedly pressing the release.

Open the swing gate

  1. Stop safely, select Park and apply the parking brake. Check that the full tailgate is closed and that people, cargo and equipment are clear of the swing gate’s path.
  2. Unlock the truck using the key fob or power-door unlock control. Ford also describes unlocking at the release button when an intelligent-access key is within 1 metre; do not assume the key is detected if the gate remains locked.
  3. Press the button inside the swing-gate handle, not the separate full-tailgate release. Open the gate carefully while watching its path.
  4. With a trailer attached, check the jack and other protruding equipment before and throughout the movement. Ford instructs owners to open the swing gate only halfway from closed to avoid trailer jacks. Stop sooner if anything is in its path.

Halfway is a caution—not a clearance guarantee

Trailer jacks, couplers, hitch accessories and how the truck and trailer are positioned can change the available space. Do not force the gate to a presumed safe position or use contact with the jack as a stop. If you cannot see or establish clearance, leave it closed and change the access plan.

Ford describes obstacle reversal for the powered full tailgate; that does not establish automatic obstacle protection for the separate swing gate. Do not rely on a sensor to protect a jack, accessory, hand or person from the swinging section.

It is not a seat or step

Do not hang, sit or stand on an open swing gate. Ford lists a maximum swing-gate load of 180 lb, but that figure does not cancel the explicit prohibition on using it to support a person. Do not confuse the swing gate with a separate bed-access step.

Close it before lowering the full tailgate or driving

Clear the closing path, close the swing gate fully and confirm it is secure. A warning tone or swing-gate-open indicator means you should recheck closure. Do not drive with the swing gate open; Ford warns this can damage it and its components.

If you then need the full tailgate lowered, first check that its separate movement path is clear—including the hitch, trailer and any bed accessories. With the swing gate securely closed and the truck unlocked, use the full-tailgate handle button. The remote tailgate button operates with 2 presses within 3 seconds. Keep everyone clear of powered movement rather than testing its obstruction response.

For powered closing, Ford provides the centre button on the full tailgate or the same 2-press remote command. Confirm both sections are closed before departure. If a section will not latch or the warning remains, stop and have the fault checked rather than bypassing the interlock.
