Downloading a Tesla update and installing it are different jobs. The first gets the files ready; the second makes the car unavailable for driving. Choose the installation time around your next journey—not the other way around.
This guide uses the Canadian 2025+ Model Y manual and Tesla Support Canada. Follow the messages and manual for your actual vehicle; an online manual’s software version does not prove that version is installed in your car.
Check availability without chasing someone else’s version
While parked, open Controls → Software. Tesla distributes updates in stages, so another owner receiving a version does not mean yours has failed. An available update can be scheduled; an up-to-date message means no update is currently pending for your vehicle. Tesla does not push a release to an individual vehicle simply on request.
Download first: keep a reliable connection
Connect to stable Wi-Fi; Tesla Support recommends at least 3 signal bars. A green download icon indicates downloading, while a yellow download icon indicates availability without Wi-Fi. A clock icon marks readiness to install. Driving during download can interrupt the connection, so a paused download is not the same as a failed installation.
Choose a safe installation window
You cannot drive during installation. Tesla also warns that doors, windows and some safety systems may be limited or disabled. Leave the car safely parked when nobody depends on those functions or its climate control, and allow a generous window: some updates take several hours.
Keep Climate On, Pet Mode and Camp Mode prevent installation. Do not switch off protection for a person or animal just to make an update proceed. Choose another time, when everyone can safely be outside the vehicle and you do not need an immediate departure.
- Confirm the vehicle is in Park and the download is ready.
- Open the clock icon or the available update under Controls → Software.
- Choose Install Now only when the car can remain unused, or Set For This Time to schedule a suitable start.
- Before installation starts, use the scheduling window to change the time if necessary. Once installation begins, it cannot be cancelled.
If you are driving at the scheduled start, Tesla says the update is cancelled and must be rescheduled. Charging pauses during installation and resumes after completion; do not plan a last-minute charge and update as if both will run uninterrupted.
During and after the installation
Let the process finish; do not treat an installation screen as an ordinary frozen touchscreen. Avoid general reboot instructions, factory resets, battery disconnection or unofficial firmware tools. Follow any specific message from the car or Tesla.
After completion, check the installed version under Software and read Controls → Software → Release Notes. Release notes may contain changed operating or safety instructions—not just new entertainment features. Check the vehicle is ready and any charging you still need has resumed before relying on it for the next journey.
If it appears stuck, identify the phase first
A download problem starts with the connection and displayed status. For an update believed unsuccessful, or a vehicle or screen that is unresponsive after an update, Tesla gives this specific troubleshooting sequence:
- First check the update status. The following reboot step is conditional: more than 3 hours must have passed since the update started, with no Software Update Complete notification in the Tesla app.
- Keep the vehicle safely stopped and in Park. For that failed-update condition, Tesla says to hold both steering-wheel scroll buttons until the Tesla T appears on the touchscreen—approximately 20 seconds. Do not use this as a repeated intervention in a normal installation.
- If the update remains unsuccessful, schedule Tesla Service. If there is no progress or you cannot establish the update’s status, use Tesla’s service route rather than repeatedly rebooting.
Record the start time, displayed status and any error before requesting help. A software version you saw online is not evidence that the installation succeeded, and Tesla does not support reverting to an earlier version.
