Walk-away locking is convenient until an exception leaves the car unlocked. Before leaving your Model Y unattended, check the result—not just whether you remember enabling the setting. Keep your working key card with you, not in the car.
This guide uses Tesla’s Canadian 2025+ Model Y manual, showing software version 2026.38.3 when checked. Match the controls to your vehicle; older Model Y versions and other software may differ.
Turn it on and recognize confirmation
While parked, open Controls → Locks → Walk-Away Door Lock and enable it. A configured phone key, supported paired key fob or authenticated Apple Watch can trigger it—not a key card alone. Tesla says locking produces one exterior-light flash; mirror folding depends on its setting. Optional sound is under Lock Confirmation Sound. Door-lock settings.
Check these exceptions before walking away
- Exclude Home is enabled and the car is at your saved Home location.
- A phone key or paired key fob is detected inside, a door or trunk is not fully closed, or phone-key Bluetooth is off.
- You exited somewhere other than the driver’s door.
- An authenticated key stayed detected for several minutes after exit: Tesla requires manual locking until after the next drive.
Camp Mode also disables walk-away locking. Do not assume every climate mode behaves the same. Tesla’s climate-mode explanation.
If confirmation is missing, investigate before leaving. Neither a quiet car nor folded mirrors alone tells you why a particular attempt did not work. Avoid repeatedly walking away and returning without checking the setting, closures and keys.
Use the key card when automatic locking does not happen
Use a card already authenticated to this car. First establish that the car is unlocked while keeping your working keys with you. Close the doors and trunks, then tap the card once against the reader approximately one-third up the driver-side door pillar, as shown in Tesla’s key-card illustration. It may need physical contact for 1–2 seconds. Observe the response to that locking attempt. A card tap can lock or unlock; a flash alone does not distinguish the two, so do not keep tapping without knowing the starting state.
Keep the card in your wallet or purse as a backup for a flat, lost or unavailable phone. Carrying the card away does not trigger automatic locking. If the working card or normal controls cannot secure the car, seek Tesla assistance rather than leaving it unattended on the assumption that it will eventually lock.
Why pulling the handle can give a misleading test
Tesla explains that an authenticated phone nearby lets the doors unlock when a handle is pulled. That means returning with your active phone key and opening a door does not, by itself, prove walk-away locking failed. You may have just unlocked it again. Do not test this by leaving your active phone inside or locking away your only working key.
Only the driver’s door opens? Check a different setting
While parked, open Controls → Locks → Driver Door Unlock Mode. Enable it if you want the first unlock limited to the driver’s door, or turn it off if you do not want that restriction. With it enabled, Tesla says the key must be detected on the driver’s side, not the passenger’s side. To let passengers in after entering, use the lock icon on the touchscreen to unlock the remaining doors; check that the icon shows unlocked. This is separate from walk-away locking and does not turn off rear-door child locks. Tesla’s door-lock instructions.
