A frozen Model Y touchscreen does not automatically mean the entire vehicle needs resetting. First check whether a software installation is in progress. Do not use this general restart procedure to interrupt an active installation; follow Tesla’s update-specific troubleshooting or seek assistance if its status is unclear. Outside that situation, Tesla’s supported first step is a touchscreen restart while stopped and in Park. The two steering-wheel scroll buttons restart the display—not the rest of the vehicle.
This guide follows the current Model Y instructions linked from Tesla Support Canada, checked October 31, 2026. Tesla illustrates steering wheels from before and from approximately February 2025 onward; both use the two scroll buttons for this procedure. Match your controls to the actual manufacturer illustrations and follow your vehicle’s current instructions if its configuration differs.
Park first: the display will go dark
Never attempt this while driving. During the restart, the vehicle-status display, safety warnings and backup-camera view will not be visible. Stop in a safe place and select Park before beginning. If you cannot safely stop or confirm Park, do not start the button sequence; obtain assistance.
Do not treat a restart as a way to dismiss a safety warning or prove the vehicle is safe to drive. Follow any specific warning’s instructions. This is a supported display-troubleshooting step, not a diagnosis of a failed screen, battery or vehicle computer.
Restart the touchscreen
- With Model Y stopped and in Park, press and hold both steering-wheel scroll buttons until the touchscreen turns black. Press the buttons inward; do not merely roll them.
- Allow approximately 30 seconds for the touchscreen to restart. Stay parked while the display is unavailable.
- Once it returns, check whether the original problem remains. If it is still unresponsive or behaving unusually after a few minutes, Tesla says to try a vehicle power cycle if possible.
The Tesla restart instructions do not call for a factory reset or battery disconnection. They also explicitly distinguish a touchscreen restart from powering the vehicle off and on. There is no reason to erase profiles or saved settings just to perform this procedure.
Power-cycle only if you can use the required menu
If the screen responds enough to operate the menu, Tesla provides a separate vehicle power-cycle procedure. If the display is completely unresponsive, do not guess where an invisible menu item is or improvise a physical battery reset; contact Tesla for help.
- Keep the vehicle in Park. On the touchscreen, choose Controls → Safety → Power Off.
- Wait at least 2 minutes without interacting with the vehicle. Do not open a door, touch the brake pedal or touch the screen during that wait.
- After the wait, press the brake pedal or open a door to wake the vehicle. Then check whether the problem has cleared.
The quiet waiting period is part of the procedure, not time to repeatedly test the screen. If an immediate safety need arises, prioritize people’s safety rather than completing a troubleshooting timer.
If the problem returns, give service a useful record
A display that repeatedly freezes deserves a service report, not an endless cycle of restarts. In the Tesla app, select Service, choose the relevant concern and follow the prompts. Tesla’s service guidance asks for details such as the date, time and time zone, identifiable symptoms, relevant settings and photos or video.
Record whether the screen was frozen, black or responding only in some areas; what you were doing when it happened; and whether the touchscreen restart or full power cycle changed it. Take photos only while safely parked, and avoid sharing private messages or account information publicly.
Do not resume driving merely because the logo appeared. Confirm the display has returned and follow any remaining vehicle warnings. If required information or controls remain unavailable, seek Tesla assistance before continuing rather than assuming another restart will make the trip safe.
