A phone can be paired to the Explorer while a call is routed to the handset—or its microphone is muted. Before deleting the connection, check the native Phone controls. This guide covers the Canadian 2026 Explorer’s documented Bluetooth phone menus, not CarPlay or Android Auto setup.
Use the Canada/US manual’s illustrated Apps and Settings controls alongside these steps. The July 2025 edition describes this system; if an update or different installation has changed your menus, follow the current instructions for that vehicle rather than guessing a reset sequence.
Start parked, with your own phone
Park safely, select Park and apply the parking brake. Follow the vehicle’s instructions for powering the display; do not run an engine in an enclosed space. Keep the phone beside you so you can compare both screens without rushing.
Use your own phone or obtain the owner’s permission before pairing another one. Review sharing prompts instead of automatically accepting access to somebody else’s contacts.
Pair and confirm the number
- Open Apps using the six-dot icon. Open the Settings app, shown in the manual with a sliders-style symbol, then select Bluetooth and Add device.
- When the vehicle prompts you to search, open the phone’s Bluetooth settings and select your vehicle. Do not choose a nearby vehicle simply because it appears first.
- Compare the number on the phone with the number on the vehicle display. Confirm only if they match. Wait for the touchscreen to indicate successful pairing.
- Review the phonebook-download request on the phone. Ford’s pairing instructions include approval of that request; decide whether you want those contacts shared before proceeding. This is not a reason to grant unrelated permissions or assume every Phone feature works on every handset.
Make one parked test call
With a willing person expecting the test, use Phone Keypad to enter the number and select Call. Check that you can hear each other. If more than one phone is paired, use Phone List to select the intended device; do not troubleshoot the passenger’s connection by mistake.
For an active call, Ford documents these separate controls:
Audio is on the handset: Privacy transfers the call between the phone and the vehicle system. Check that setting before deleting the pairing. Keep the handset parked in a safe place rather than picking it up while driving.
You hear the caller, but they cannot hear you: check Mute. That control switches off the microphone; it is not the same as transferring the call with Privacy.
Incoming calls do not ring through: check Do Not Disturb in the Phone menu. Ford says it rejects incoming calls and switches off ringtones and alerts. Turn it off only if you want those interruptions.
End the test call and stop changing settings once the problem is resolved. These checks identify possible control states, not proof that a microphone, phone or display is defective.
Music is a separate check
For native Bluetooth music, connect the device and choose Bluetooth audio from Apps, as described on printed page 477. Do not assume that hearing music proves the microphone works, or that a successful call proves phone projection is configured.
If it still fails
Record the phone model, operating-system version, vehicle software version if available, exact message and whether the fault affects pairing, outgoing audio, incoming audio or only music. Also note whether Privacy, Mute or Do Not Disturb changed the result.
Use official Ford or phone support for the next step. Do not jump to a vehicle factory reset, disconnect the battery or install unofficial firmware. A screen that does not match this manual needs the correct instructions, not repeated guesses.
Temporary pairing also deserves cleanup. Use the vehicle’s documented removal controls after a borrowed-phone test; our connected-vehicle handover guide covers the more complete privacy check for a sale or return.
