An 80% limit is not the right blanket instruction for every Mustang Mach-E. Ford’s Canadian 2026 manual gives different everyday recommendations for its two battery chemistries. Identify yours first, then change the target—not just the charging timetable.
This procedure follows the Canada/US owner’s manual, November 2025 edition, including its illustrated charging-menu icons. Use it when your vehicle has the matching controls; software updates can change the screen layout.
Choose the percentage before touching the slider
Ford’s battery-care section identifies the battery using the eighth character of the VIN on the dashboard or driver-door identification label: 4 or 5 indicates lithium iron phosphate (LFP); another digit or letter indicates nickel cobalt manganese (NCM). If the identification is unclear or the battery has been replaced, have Ford confirm the installed battery before choosing its routine.
For the extended-range NCM battery, Ford recommends a 90% everyday maximum. It also recommends scheduling charging to begin at least 2–3 hours after your usual plug-in time so the battery can cool.
For the standard-range LFP battery, Ford says to set the maximum to 100% and complete a 100% charge at least once per month to maintain range accuracy. Do not replace that instruction with an automatic “all EVs should stop at 80%” rule.
Set the target on the touchscreen
Park before changing settings. On the touchscreen, open the settings menu using the six-dot icon illustrated in the manual. Then select the charging icon showing a car and plug.
Find Target Charge and move the main slider to your chosen percentage. Read the displayed target back before leaving the screen. Ford describes this as the percentage at which charging stops; Daily and Trip labels help distinguish the two uses.
At the next charging session, check both the target and charge status. “Charged” means the vehicle has reached its configured maximum, not necessarily 100%. A 90% target is therefore not a failed full charge.
The timer and AC rate do different jobs
Preferred Charge Times controls when AC charging is prioritized at a saved location. It does not replace the target percentage. Before adding a location, Ford requires that the vehicle has successfully charged there for at least a few minutes.
A departure setting can cause charging outside the preferred window when more time is needed to reach the target before departure. The schedule is not a guarantee that every kilowatt-hour falls in your cheapest tariff period.
The Advanced menu’s AC Rate slider limits charging current, not how full the battery becomes. Do not change electrical-installation limits as part of setting a battery percentage. For installation questions, use our home-charging assessment guide.
What changes at a fast charger or before a trip?
Location schedules and Departure and Comfort settings do not apply to DC fast charging. Ford’s separate DC guidance says charging beyond 80% becomes significantly slower; stopping at 80% or lower helps battery health, while charging to 100% maximizes range for the next trip. That is not the same instruction as the LFP everyday AC routine.
If you raise the target for a journey, review it again afterwards and return to the recommendation for your battery. Do not assume that selecting a Trip-labelled target automatically restores the daily setting.
If the result is not what you expected
Check the screen before changing more settings: a preferred-time message explains a scheduled wait; “Charge station paused” means charging is paused at the station. A station-fault or no-power message is not solved by raising the target. Follow the vehicle and charger instructions, and seek qualified help for a persistent fault rather than opening equipment or touching high-voltage components.
If your screen does not match the illustrated controls, use the current manual for your vehicle or ask Ford to identify the menu for its installed software. Do not substitute an older model’s location-based limit procedure.
