For an equipped 2026 Explorer, the key-fob sequence is lock once, then remote-start twice within a few seconds. Start with the safety checks below—not repeated button presses.
First: outdoors, not in the garage
Health Canada warns against idling a vehicle in a garage even with the door open. Remote start is not an exception. Do not use this feature in an enclosed space.
This guide follows the 2026 Explorer Canada/US manual, printed pages 137–138, for vehicles equipped with key-fob remote start. It does not cover aftermarket systems or app setup.
Start, confirm and stop
- With the vehicle safely parked outdoors, make sure it is off, in P and has its hood closed. Unplug unused electrical devices: outlets become powered during remote start. Do not remote-start with low fuel.
- Press the fob’s lock button once, then press the circular-arrow “2x” remote-start button twice within a few seconds. Do not confuse it with the liftgate button.
- Successful operation locks the doors, flashes the indicators twice and turns on the parking lamps. A horn sounds if starting fails.
- To stop remotely, press the remote-start button once. A valid key must be inside before you switch the vehicle on and drive.
If it does not start
Check whether remote start is enabled, the alarm is sounding, the hood is open, P is selected or the vehicle is already on. Ford allows two remote starts before a normal on/off cycle is required.
Settings → Vehicle → Remote Start Setup contains the remote-start settings. Do not assume a particular runtime or heated-seat behaviour; inspect your vehicle’s choices.
If these checks do not explain it, record what the lamps, horn and displays did and ask for diagnosis. Do not bypass a hood switch or other interlock to make remote start work.
Know what you are confirming
A button press is a request, not proof that the vehicle started. Check the response rather than planning around an assumed warm cabin. Keep the keys secure and never rely on remote start as supervision for anyone left in the vehicle.
