A lower opening height can help with a low ceiling—but program it somewhere with clear overhead space first. Do not use the garage roof as the stopping point.
This procedure is for an equipped 2026 Explorer power liftgate, using Ford’s Canada/US owner’s manual, printed page 96. It does not apply to a manual liftgate.
Set and save the height
- Park, select P and clear people and objects from the liftgate’s path. Keep children away from the controls.
- Open the liftgate. Press its own control button to stop it at the desired height; adjust it manually only after movement stops.
- Hold the button on the liftgate until the confirmation tone. The remote or dashboard button cannot program the height.
- Close and reopen it with the path clear to check the saved position. Fully close it before driving.
If it will not save or open
A position that is too low cannot be saved. Choose a higher safe position and repeat. The setting persists even after battery disconnection.
For other failures, check that power operation is enabled, P is selected and nothing obstructs or weighs down the liftgate. Freezing conditions or downhill parking can affect operation; persistent trouble needs service. Never force a moving liftgate.
A saved height is not a clearance guarantee
Your parking position matters. A different slope or stopping point can put the liftgate closer to the ceiling. Leave visible clearance and supervise every opening; do not assume the stored setting makes every parking space safe.
