Before approving a service package, work out what your vehicle’s manual says is due, and why. The answer may depend on elapsed time, kilometres, driving conditions and the maintenance display. A low odometer reading alone does not settle it.
Here is a practical way to read the schedule, using the Canadian 2026 Mazda CX-30 as the worked example. The numerical intervals below are specific to that manual, not a schedule for every Mazda. This is a planning guide, not instructions for carrying out an oil change or resetting a reminder.
1. Start with the right manual and your last service record
Match the model year and engine, then check the country heading. Mazda’s relevant section explicitly covers the U.S.A., Canada and Puerto Rico. Do not copy a neighbouring country’s table merely because it appears in the same online manual.
Keep the previous invoice beside you. You need the date, odometer reading and work actually completed. “Serviced recently” is too vague to establish whether the oil and filter were replaced or another item was only inspected.
Open the exact Canadian-applicable 2026 CX-30 schedule, rather than relying on a search-result snippet or an older model’s chart.
2. Choose the applicable driving conditions
For this CX-30, Mazda’s severe-use criteria are prolonged idling or low-speed operation, driving mainly on unpaved roads, or mainly on mountain/uphill roads. The severe oil-and-filter interval is 8,000 km or 6 months, whichever comes first.
The normal schedule uses the maintenance indication, with a maximum of 16,000 km or 12 months after previous maintenance. An indication that arrives earlier still needs attention. Use the listed conditions, not a blanket assumption that every Canadian vehicle follows the same severe schedule. Mazda’s conditions and intervals
For severe use, Mazda also says the vehicle status monitor must be set manually. Ask the service provider to ensure it matches the applicable schedule, following the Information section of the Mazda Connect manual; do not assume the existing reminder is already set correctly.
If your use is difficult to classify, describe your actual trips and operating conditions to the service provider and ask which manual provision applies. That produces a more useful answer than arguing about a generic “Canadian service” label.
3. Calculate both the kilometre limit and the date
Consider a hypothetical severe-use CX-30 whose oil and filter were replaced at 24,000 km on January 15, 2026. Using the interval above:
24,000 km + 8,000 km = 32,000 km.
January 15 + 6 months = July 15, 2026.
The next interval ends at 32,000 km or July 15, whichever arrives first. These are example records, not the history of a vehicle we serviced.
| What happens next | What the calculation tells you |
|---|---|
| It reaches 32,000 km on May 20 | The distance limit arrives before July. Do not wait for the calendar date. |
| It reaches only 28,000 km by July 15 | The time limit arrives first. Low mileage does not extend it. |
This calculation helps you plan the appointment. It is not permission to ignore an earlier warning, leak, unusual noise or other problem until the calculated date.
4. Read each item, not just the oil row
In Mazda’s table, I means inspect, R means replace, and T means tighten. Inspection can lead to cleaning, adjustment or replacement where necessary; it does not automatically order a new part every time.
For severe use, the manual keeps the other maintenance items on their specified normal-table intervals. Do not halve every interval because the oil needs more frequent attention. Mazda also requires oil data to be reset after an oil change; that reset records completed work rather than performing it. Table symbols and service notes
When a quote includes an air filter, for example, ask whether it is a scheduled replacement or a condition-based recommendation. If it is condition-based, ask what the inspection found. You can accept sensible additional work without confusing it with a manufacturer requirement.
5. Turn the result into a clear service request
A useful request might read: “The oil and filter were replaced at 24,000 km on January 15. My use meets the manual’s severe conditions, so I am booking before 32,000 km or July 15. Please identify the other items due and separate any additional recommendations.”
That example gives the advisor a starting point without authorizing unspecified work. Our repair-estimate guide explains how to review the findings, price and approval details.
After the visit, keep the invoice showing the date, odometer and completed items. Calculate the next applicable deadline from the new record. A calendar reminder and an odometer note work together; neither requires buying an entire service menu without understanding it.
