2026 BMW X3 M50 vs 2026 Audi SQ5: Canadian Six-Cylinder SUV Hardware and Options

The 2026 BMW X3 M50 xDrive and Audi SQ5 TFSI quattro are close enough in purpose to deserve the same shopping trip, but not an assumption that their equipment is interchangeable. Both use turbocharged six-cylinder engines and AWD. The BMW emphasizes its M-specific drivetrain hardware; the Audi brings an air-suspension arrangement and a broad digital cockpit. The useful comparison is how those choices fit your daily use, not which badge looks more sporting.

This is a Canadian 2026 comparison. BMW’s current Canadian M50 page links its 26C2 configurator, and an Ottawa BMW retailer record for VIN 5UX73GP08T9255241 independently identifies a 2026 M50 with optional adaptive suspension. Audi’s Canadian page explicitly identifies 2026. Later BMW production updates and an unverified Canadian 2027 SQ5 configuration are not treated as carryover facts here. This is not a road test or a stock-availability promise.

Two six-cylinder routes to everyday performance

BMW Canada’s technical data identifies a 3.0-litre inline-six, 48-volt mild-hybrid assistance, eight-speed automatic and AWD. Its estimated combined output is 393 hp and 428 lb-ft. Audi Canada lists a turbocharged V6 with 362 hp and 406 lb-ft, quattro AWD and seven-speed S tronic. Those figures describe the powertrains; they do not prove a passing-performance or fuel-cost result.

Try gentle acceleration and low-speed manoeuvres as carefully as a motorway merge. The response you want when pulling out of a junction may differ from what feels exciting during a short demonstration. Drive with the cabin at a normal temperature and the audio turned down, then ask whether the engine and transmission behaviour would remain pleasant on your usual commute. Neither layout earns an automatic refinement verdict from cylinder arrangement alone.

Separate adaptive suspension from the performance badge

The BMW model page identifies an M Sport differential and variable sport steering, while describing adaptive M suspension as available. The Canadian retailer’s 2026 example specifically lists option 2VF adaptive M suspension; that confirms an equipped example, not that every M50 includes it. Audi describes its SQ5 S-tuned adaptive air suspension with adjustable ride height. Ask which system is actually installed on the cars you drive.

A comparison between an optionally equipped BMW and an Audi on a different tire setup can mislead if you attribute everything you feel to the model name. Note the tires, wheels and suspension settings before driving a representative route. Include patched pavement and an ordinary parking entrance, not just smooth roads. A setting that feels tightly controlled for a few minutes may not be the one your passengers choose for a longer journey.

The wheel and option list deserves its own budget

Audi identifies 21-inch wheels as standard. BMW’s Canadian M50 page lists blue M Sport brake calipers as standard and red calipers with an optional package. Caliper colour is not a reason to assume a fundamentally different braking system. Ask for an approved winter-wheel and tire quotation, including any necessary sensors, before choosing a cosmetic package.

Audi’s passenger display, head-up display, upgraded Bang & Olufsen audio and adaptive cruise assist are available features. Do not compare a well-equipped demonstration vehicle with a bare starting price. Write down the few functions you genuinely need and confirm them on both orders. A driver who spends more time parking than travelling with a front passenger may value cameras more than another screen.

Family usability still decides many purchases

Set the front seat for the regular driver, then let the rear passengers judge their own space. Bring a child restraint or frequently carried luggage if relevant. Check the everyday details: entry, rear-seat access, storage for small items and whether your normal cargo fits without rearranging the entire cabin. This article does not award a cargo-volume winner from differently presented measurements.

Evaluate the interfaces with ordinary tasks rather than a showroom animation. Find the temperature controls, adjust a navigation route and connect your phone while parked. Ask which services require a subscription after a trial. The better interface is the one you can use confidently, not necessarily the one with the largest combined display area.

The sensible shortlist

Choose the M50 for a closer inspection if its inline-six and M hardware appeal, but budget the actual suspension and comfort configuration you want. Choose the SQ5 for a closer inspection if its V6, air-suspension arrangement and cabin layout fit your priorities. Price completed Canadian orders and obtain a delivery commitment. If changing to a later model year, repeat the equipment check rather than carrying these specifications forward.

The selected M50 suspension option and the SQ5’s fitted wheels belong on the comparison sheet before negotiating. Our vehicle-quote guide provides a way to compare completed builds rather than a configured demonstrator against a base price.
