The 2027 Hyundai IONIQ 5 N and 2027 Kia EV5 GT AWD both bring performance badges to electric SUVs, but they are not equivalent expressions of that idea. The Hyundai is the more specialized high-output choice. The Kia raises performance within a family-oriented model range while retaining the equipment of its upper trims. Comparing them is useful precisely because the badges can hide how different the purchase decisions are.
This is a Canadian specification-based comparison, not a back-to-back road test. The Kia is the actual GT AWD, not GT-Line or GT-Line Limited. A review of one of those other trims does not establish what the GT is like.
Start with the size of the performance step
Hyundai advertises up to 601 horsepower, or 641 with N Grin Boost for up to ten seconds. Kia lists 302 horsepower and 354 lb-ft for EV5 GT, versus 261 horsepower for its other AWD trims. These are manufacturer outputs, not acceleration measurements collected for this article. Sources: Hyundai Canada IONIQ 5 N and Kia Canada GT announcement.
That gap changes the shortlist. Someone specifically seeking a high-output performance EV should not assume the EV5 GT is a direct substitute merely because both vehicles sit at the sporting end of their respective ranges. Equally, someone wanting a well-equipped daily SUV with a performance upgrade need not conclude that the larger number is automatically worth buying.
Decide what you want to do with the car before comparing badges. If track use is part of the plan, establish preparation, consumables and the applicable operating instructions separately. If the car will mainly commute and carry passengers, spend more of the test drive checking low-speed response, visibility and ordinary controls than chasing headline acceleration.
The front seats reveal another difference
Hyundai’s Canadian 2027 specification table lists six-way manual front-seat adjustment, heated and ventilated N bucket seats, an electronic limited-slip differential and electronically controlled suspension. Kia’s 2027 AWD trim guide says GT builds on GT-Line Limited, retaining its comfort equipment, with suede/synthetic-leather seating and GT-specific details. The inherited equipment includes power front seats, driver memory, a panoramic sunroof and heated rear seats.
Manual adjustment is not automatically a drawback, but it deserves attention when two people regularly share the car. Try getting the N bucket seat into a suitable position, then repeat the process for the second driver. In the Kia, check what the memory function actually recalls rather than assuming it covers every preference.
Have the passenger try the seat as carefully as the driver. Support during a brief showroom sit is not the same thing as comfort over a full journey. Check entry and exit, thigh support and whether the seating position leaves appropriate room behind you.
Wheels, charging and ownership deserve their own budget
The Hyundai uses 21-inch forged wheels with 275/35R21 Pirelli P-Zero tires. Kia specifies 20-inch GT wheels with Michelin tires. Those descriptions do not establish a winter-grip winner or identical tire categories. Obtain replacement-tire and suitable winter-wheel quotes for the exact vehicle rather than assuming the standard wheel size is the only approved option.
For charging, map your real journeys and inspect compatible sites before purchase. Both Canadian specification sources identify NACS connections, but a common connector does not make charging performance identical. Ask which adapters are supplied and check the requirements behind any advertised charging time. This comparison does not turn best-case charging claims into guaranteed stop lengths.
Also check charging access at home or work before assigning value to either battery specification. An equipment-rich electric SUV still needs a routine that fits your parking situation. Keep any installation cost separate from the vehicle payment so it is visible in the comparison.
Which one belongs on your shortlist?
Choose the IONIQ 5 N as the starting point if its much higher published output and specialist hardware are the reasons you are shopping. Start with EV5 GT if you want the upper EV5 equipment bundle with more performance than the other AWD versions. Drive both before deciding whether the extra specialization addresses a need or simply adds appeal on paper.
Compare current itemized Canadian quotes for these exact trims. No price, range or ride-comfort winner is declared here, and neither badge proves that a particular vehicle is available for immediate delivery.
Include replacement tires and your expected charging mix in the performance-EV budget. The vehicle ownership budget worksheet provides a written framework for that comparison.
