The Toyota Corolla Cross LE Premium and Volkswagen Taos Comfortline 4MOTION make a surprisingly route-dependent comparison. Toyota’s published fuel figures favour city use; Volkswagen’s highway figure is lower. Their equipment also asks you to choose between an included moonroof and a powered driver’s seat with parking sensors. A single combined-consumption number or package name will not tell the whole story.
This Canadian specification guide pairs the 2026 Corolla Cross LE Premium gasoline AWD with the 2027 Taos Comfortline 4MOTION. Exact Canadian 2027 Corolla Cross specifications were not confirmed and Toyota’s Canadian showroom still lists 2026. Volkswagen’s 2027 Canadian guide is verified. Both years are intentional; no later Toyota equipment is assumed and neither vehicle here is a hybrid.
What these exact specifications provide
Toyota’s gas Corolla Cross uses a 169-hp 2.0-litre engine and CVT. LE Premium AWD adds 18-inch wheels, a moonroof, roof rails, wireless charging and a 10.5-inch multimedia display. The package does not add XLE’s powered driver’s seat, SofTex upholstery, dual-zone climate control, heated rear seats or power tailgate. Toyota’s 2026 trim announcement details the equipment.
Checked October 31, 2026, Toyota’s Canadian configurator with Alberta selected lists C$31,905 MSRP plus the C$2,225 LE Premium package: C$34,130, excluding the separately listed block heater, other accessories, delivery, fees, taxes, registration and insurance.
Volkswagen’s Canadian 2027 guide lists a 174-hp, 184-lb-ft 1.5-litre turbo and eight-speed automatic. Comfortline 4MOTION has leatherette, an eight-way power driver’s seat, front/rear parking sensors, an eight-inch centre display and 10.25-inch instrument display. A panoramic roof is an optional package, not standard Comfortline equipment. Published AWD fuel estimates are 9.3/7.1/8.3 L/100 km city/highway/combined; the guide qualifies technical data as entry-trim figures that may vary with trim, options and accessories. Your route can reverse the fuel argument
The 2026 NRCan guide lists gasoline Corolla Cross AWD at 8.1/7.6/7.8 L/100 km city/highway/combined. These are not Corolla Cross Hybrid figures.
The Toyota’s city figure is 1.2 L/100 km lower, but the Volkswagen’s highway figure is 0.5 lower. That reversal matters to someone choosing between short urban trips and long highway commutes. It is more informative than simply calling one SUV more efficient in every situation.
At the published combined figures, Toyota’s 0.5 L/100 km advantage represents 100 litres over 20,000 km, or $160 at an assumed $1.60 per litre. That is an illustration, not a current-price forecast or real-world guarantee. Check the actual Taos Comfortline fuel label because Volkswagen’s guide includes the trim/equipment qualification.
Use your route to decide which rating deserves attention, but do not create an official rating by casually averaging the two test figures. Weather, traffic, trip length and driving style will affect actual results.
Seat comfort versus an included roof
The Volkswagen’s powered adjustment may help a driver find a comfortable position, but the seat still needs to fit. Check cushion support, pedal reach and steering-wheel adjustment in both vehicles. If the Toyota’s manual seat gives you the position you want, it need not be a disadvantage.
If a panoramic roof is important, put the Volkswagen option into the quote and check headroom in a vehicle with it fitted. A demonstration without the roof is not an adequate fit test for the version you intend to buy. Conversely, an included moonroof is not a good reason to accept an uncomfortable driving position.
The equipment labels can mislead here: Toyota’s Premium package does not turn LE into XLE, and Volkswagen’s Comfortline does not include every feature shown on a Highline demonstrator.
Parking assistance and the daily routine
Have the dealer demonstrate the Taos’s parking sensors in a setting similar to where you normally park. See whether the warnings help you place the vehicle confidently and learn what the system cannot detect. Electronic assistance does not replace looking around the vehicle.
Try the Toyota’s sightlines and camera with the seat adjusted properly. If you need additional parking equipment, price the exact trim that supplies it rather than adding assumed features to LE Premium. That would be a separate specification choice.
A turbo automatic and a naturally aspirated CVT deserve the same route
The powertrains use different approaches, but neither layout establishes a reliability winner or a measured acceleration result. Drive the same hill, merge lane and low-speed traffic section in each vehicle.
Notice response to small accelerator movements, engine sound under a longer load and whether the transmission behaviour feels natural. A few extra horsepower on a specification sheet are less important than being comfortable with the vehicle’s response every day.
Finish with passengers, luggage and a written quote
Bring the child restraints or bulky luggage you normally carry. Check rear-seat access, front-seat space after restraint installation and hatch usability with the required seats upright. This article does not rank cargo capacity using measurements taken under different conditions.
Get same-province written quotes with equivalent fee treatment, roof options and accessories. Toyota’s MSRP-plus-package amount above excludes delivery and fees; compare matching subtotals before comparing the final amounts payable. The model-year difference also does not guarantee a discount on one vehicle or superior resale for the other.
The verdict
Start with Corolla Cross LE Premium if its included conveniences suit you and your use leans toward the city-driving fuel case. Start with Taos Comfortline if its seat adjustment, parking sensors and turbo/automatic response better suit your routine, or if highway use is especially important.
Neither the fuel illustration nor a roof package should override a poor fit. The right choice is the one that combines useful equipment, comfortable operation and a competitive complete quote for your actual driving.
