2027 Subaru Crosstrek Onyx vs 2027 Volkswagen Taos Comfortline: Rough-Road Controls or Daily Parking Convenience?

The 2027 Subaru Crosstrek Onyx and Volkswagen Taos Comfortline 4MOTION both offer AWD and a powered driver’s seat without moving to their respective top trims. That makes them a useful comparison for someone who wants more than an entry-level cabin but does not want to buy equipment indiscriminately. Their bigger difference is the kind of driving problem each specification addresses.

This Canadian guide compares the gasoline 2027 Crosstrek Onyx—not Hybrid Onyx—with the 2027 Taos Comfortline 4MOTION, not Black Edition or Highline. It uses exact-year manufacturer information and buying analysis rather than claiming a back-to-back road test.

A compact specification snapshot

Subaru’s gasoline model uses a 180-hp, 178-lb-ft 2.5-litre engine and CVT. Its engineering page lists 220 mm ground clearance and city/highway consumption of 9.0/7.1 L/100 km. A combined figure is not verified here. Subaru Canada’s 2027 engineering specifications.

Onyx includes a ten-way power driver’s seat, Reverse Automatic Braking and dual-function X-MODE. Checked October 31, 2026, Subaru Canada’s consumer configurator lists the 2027 gasoline Onyx automatic at C$35,395 MSRP, with Nunavut selected and no added accessories. Freight/PDI, other fees, taxes, licensing, registration and insurance are additional; no Ontario drive-away total is implied.

Volkswagen lists a 174-hp, 184-lb-ft 1.5-litre turbo engine and eight-speed automatic. Comfortline 4MOTION includes leatherette, an eight-way power driver’s seat, front/rear parking sensors, a 10.25-inch instrument display and an eight-inch centre screen. Its panoramic roof is optional. Published AWD fuel estimates are 9.3/7.1/8.3 L/100 km city/highway/combined; the guide qualifies technical data as entry-trim figures that may vary with trim, options and accessories. Parking help and rough-road controls solve different problems

The Taos’s parking sensors are an everyday convenience worth trying if you regularly use a tight garage or crowded parking lot. Check how clearly the warnings indicate distance and direction, and whether the system helps with the obstacles you actually encounter. Sensors do not identify everything and do not replace checking the surroundings.

The Subaru’s reversing assistance should also be demonstrated, including its limitations. Do not treat an intervention feature and a distance-warning system as interchangeable simply because both help when manoeuvring.

On a rough access road, the Subaru’s clearance and selectable low-speed controls become more relevant. Describe the surface, slope and typical conditions to the dealer. The useful question is how the vehicle and its tires handle that specific route, not which brand has the better AWD reputation.

A paved commuter may never need the extra low-speed settings. Equally, a person regularly crossing ruts should not choose solely on parking convenience. Neither system makes unsuitable terrain safe, and neither AWD badge promises shorter braking distances on ice.

Power figures do not give a simple winner

The Subaru has slightly more horsepower; the Volkswagen has slightly more peak torque. Those small headline differences are less useful than trying the two powertrains. The naturally aspirated engine/CVT and turbo engine/eight-speed automatic can deliver response differently.

Use the same hill, merge lane and low-speed traffic section. Notice how easily you can make smooth speed adjustments, what happens when you ask for acceleration, and whether the engine sound is comfortable on a longer climb. Peak figures alone do not establish acceleration performance.

Do not turn a preferred transmission type into an unsupported reliability claim. If maintenance cost is important, compare the exact Canadian service schedules and written local service prices separately.

The highway fuel figures are the same

Both manufacturers list 7.1 L/100 km highway for the relevant gasoline/AWD specifications. That is a useful check against assuming that a turbo engine, a larger engine or one transmission type must automatically be more economical.

The published city figures differ by 0.3 L/100 km, while Volkswagen’s guide includes a trim/equipment qualification. Confirm the actual vehicle labels. No combined annual-cost ranking is calculated because a comparable Subaru combined value has not been established here; averaging city and highway numbers would not create an official combined rating.

Power seating is a starting point, not proof of comfort

Adjust the seat and steering wheel in both vehicles before judging the cabin. Check thigh support, pedal reach and visibility, then let a second regular driver repeat the process. Ten adjustment directions are not automatically better than eight if the cushion or backrest does not suit you.

Try the Volkswagen with the roof configuration you intend to buy. The optional panoramic roof should be included in both the headroom check and price quote if it matters to you. Do not judge the quoted vehicle using a demonstration model with a different option list.

Bring your normal cargo and passengers. A generic seats-folded capacity is not enough to establish which vehicle carries a stroller or bulky equipment while keeping the rear seats usable.

The purchase decision

Start with the Crosstrek Onyx if its ground clearance and low-speed controls address a real part of your route. Start with the Taos Comfortline if its parking assistance, seating and turbo/automatic behaviour suit your daily use better. Both need a proper fit test rather than a decision from screen size or engine output.

Obtain written Canadian quotes with matching fee treatment and include winter tires and desired options. Subaru’s MSRP above excludes delivery and fees; compare it with the same Volkswagen subtotal, then compare both completed quotes. The final equipped cost and the features you will repeatedly use are the useful comparison.

After settling on the equipment you need, compare the written offers with our vehicle quote comparison guide, keeping vehicle price and borrowing costs separate.
