2026 Kia Sportage PHEV SX vs 2026 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV GT: Canadian Five-Seat or 5+2 Choice

The Canadian 2026 Kia Sportage PHEV SX AWD and 2026 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV GT S-AWC suit different family routines. The Kia combines five-seat packaging with a lower published gasoline-mode fuel rating. The Mitsubishi offers a 5+2 cabin and more rated electric range. This comparison uses Canadian manufacturer and NRCan information, not claimed first-hand driving impressions.

Which cabin are you buying?

Sportage PHEV SX uses a 268-hp turbo plug-in hybrid system, 6-speed automatic, AWD and a 13.8-kWh battery. SX equipment includes quilted synthetic-leather upholstery, air-cooled front seats, heated rear seats, panoramic roof, head-up display, Harman Kardon audio and surround-view camera. It is not the gas EX Premium or regular-hybrid SX. Kia Canada 2026 PHEV brochure.

Outlander PHEV GT has a 22.7-kWh battery, S-AWC and seven positions in a 5+2 layout. GT equipment includes leather-appointed seating, ventilated front seats, heated second-row seats, panoramic roof, head-up display, Yamaha audio and surround-view camera. The GT Premium’s semi-aniline leather-appointed seats are not included on this GT. Mitsubishi Canada 2026 trim specifications.

If your household never needs more than five seats, do not assign value to two extra positions simply because they appear on the list. If a sixth passenger regularly joins you, the Mitsubishi merits a physical seating and luggage test. Have that passenger try the third row with the second row positioned for real occupants. A 5+2 description is not evidence of generous space for seven adults.

The fuel comparison changes with your charging routine

NRCan lists Sportage PHEV at 53 km electric range and 6.6 L/100 km combined gasoline consumption; Outlander PHEV is listed at 72 km and 8.6 L/100 km respectively. Energy-equivalent combined ratings are 2.8 and 3.2 Le/100 km, not literal gasoline litres. NRCan 2026 PHEV tables.

A regular charging routine can make the Mitsubishi’s additional rated electric distance useful, particularly if it covers trips that would otherwise extend beyond the Kia’s rating. But neither range is a guarantee in Canadian winter conditions, and the engine may run for reasons other than an empty battery. Use the numbers to plan questions, not promise petrol-free commuting.

For long travel after usable electric charge is consumed, the Kia’s lower gasoline rating becomes important. An illustrative 10,000 km at those gasoline-mode ratings differs by 200 litres. At an assumed $1.60 per litre, that is $320—not an annual saving claim for every owner. If most travel is electric, the electricity tariff, charging losses and purchase-price difference need their own calculation.

Check chargers you can actually use

Mitsubishi specifies a CHAdeMO quick-charge port and approximately 29 minutes to 80%, plus an AC reference of about 6.5 hours at 240 V/15 A. That is not a 29-minute full-charge claim. Mitsubishi charging specifications.

Confirm local connector compatibility, station fees and accessibility before valuing public charging. For both vehicles, ask the dealer to demonstrate charging controls and identify the equipment supplied with the exact build. Get a qualified home-installation assessment if needed. Do not compare charging times without matching the electrical supply and battery starting and ending levels.

The Kia has a higher published trailer limit

Kia lists up to 2,000 lb towing for Sportage PHEV; Mitsubishi lists 1,500 lb for Outlander PHEV. Equipment and loading conditions apply. Kia towing specification; Mitsubishi towing specification.

For a trailer near either limit, verify its loaded weight, tongue load, brake requirements and the vehicle’s remaining payload with passengers aboard. The Outlander’s extra seats do not create extra loading capacity, and the Kia’s higher tow maximum does not remove the need for the correct hardware.

How to decide without overbuying

Spend time on the controls while parked: connect your phone, set a destination and try the camera views. Bring your child restraints and everyday cargo. Manufacturer cargo litres can reflect different floor positions and measuring conventions, so avoid picking a winner from unlike figures. Request itemized Canadian quotes with comparable taxes, fees, accessories and financing terms.

Choose Sportage PHEV SX first when five seats suffice and lower gasoline-mode consumption or its towing allowance matters. Choose Outlander PHEV GT first when the additional seating positions or electric-range headroom address your actual routine and compatible charging is convenient. Neither badge or powertrain layout establishes reliability superiority.
