The 2026 Toyota RAV4 Limited AWD and 2026 Hyundai Tucson Ultimate Hybrid AWD both offer a well-equipped hybrid-SUV cabin. Their clearer differences are the Canadian fuel ratings and published towing ceilings. Toyota’s lower consumption figures and higher stated trailer limit deserve attention, but neither automatically makes it the better purchase at any price.
Checked October 30, 2026, using Canadian manufacturer specifications and NRCan ratings. This guide compares conventional hybrids, not plug-in versions, and does not substitute the RAV4 LE’s different specifications. It is not a back-to-back driving or towing test.
The Toyota has lower published fuel consumption
NRCan lists RAV4 AWD XSE/Limited at 5.4/6.3/5.8 L/100 km city/highway/combined, versus Tucson Hybrid at 6.7/6.7/6.7. Source: NRCan’s 2026 Fuel Consumption Guide.
The combined gap is 0.9 L/100 km. At an illustrative 20,000 km per year, that calculates to 1,160 litres for Toyota and 1,340 for Hyundai: 180 litres. At an assumed $1.60/L, the difference is $288 per year. That fuel price is an example, not a current-price claim, and actual consumption will vary.
Use the calculation to evaluate a real quote, not to justify an unlimited premium. If one vehicle costs more, divide that difference by a realistic annual saving only as a simple fuel-only check; financing, insurance, maintenance, tires and eventual resale remain separate factors. No resale or reliability advantage is assumed here.
The trailer requirement may narrow the choice first
Toyota’s Canadian product information lists 1,588 kg (3,500 lb) for RAV4 grades other than LE, including Limited. Hyundai lists up to 2,000 lb for Tucson Hybrid. Sources: Toyota Canada towing specifications; Hyundai Canada towing information.
If the loaded trailer is above the Hyundai’s stated ceiling, the comparison changes before seat materials or screen sizes matter. However, the Toyota figure is not approval for every trailer near 3,500 lb. Verify the exact vehicle’s required equipment, loading label, hitch, tongue-weight limits and owner’s-manual conditions. Include passengers, cargo and accessories.
A higher trailer ceiling does not establish a back-to-back towing-performance winner, and it does not create additional payload beyond the actual vehicle’s limits.
Both have substantial comfort and camera equipment
Toyota Limited lists heated and ventilated power front seats, heated rear seats, a panoramic moonroof, head-up display, Panoramic View Monitor, 12.9-inch centre screen and nine-speaker JBL audio. Source: Toyota Canada Limited equipment.
Hyundai Ultimate Hybrid lists ventilated leather front seats, heated rear seats, a panoramic sunroof, head-up display, Surround View Monitor, Blind View Monitor, remote parking assistance and a 12.3-inch navigation screen. Source: Hyundai Canada product card.
Try the actual seat support, camera images and everyday controls while parked. Have parking-assistance limitations explained and check connected-service terms; similar feature names do not guarantee identical operation.
Powertrain and tire differences need a drive
Toyota lists 236 combined horsepower from its 2.5-litre hybrid, with electronically controlled CVT and AWD. Hyundai lists 231 horsepower from its 1.6-litre turbo hybrid, with a six-speed automatic and AWD. Sources: Toyota powertrain information; Hyundai powertrain information.
The five-horsepower difference is not a useful acceleration verdict. Compare response, braking feel, engine noise and shifting behaviour on a representative route. No measured performance winner is claimed.
RAV4 Limited uses 18-inch wheels; Tucson Ultimate Hybrid uses 19-inch wheels. Obtain tire quotes for the actual fitments and evaluate ride on the test drive rather than assuming wheel diameter settles comfort. Sources: the same Toyota product information and Hyundai product card linked above.
Check family fit before signing
Bring your child seats, usual passengers and luggage. Set the front seats first, then evaluate rear access and cargo loading. Cargo measurements can vary with roof and floor configuration, so this guide does not declare a cargo-volume winner from an unmatched headline figure.
Ask for itemized quotes for these exact trims, including freight, fees, taxes and incentive eligibility. Compare total borrowing cost if financing and use the fuel estimate as one part of the decision.
The verdict
Start with RAV4 Limited if lower rated fuel use or the higher published trailer ceiling addresses a concrete need. Keep Tucson Ultimate Hybrid on the shortlist if its cabin, controls and actual quote fit better. Both already offer extensive comfort technology, so the decision should turn on your use and complete costs rather than feature-count exaggeration.
For the RAV4 and Tucson, our vehicle ownership budget worksheet turns the fuel-rating comparison into your own annual estimate while leaving room for tire, service and insurance costs that the ratings do not describe.
