The 2026 Hyundai Tucson Ultimate Hybrid AWD and 2026 Kia Sportage HEV SX AWD are closely matched on the features premium hybrid-SUV buyers often want. Both offer ventilated front seating, surround-view technology and a head-up display. Their published combined fuel rating is also the same. The useful decision comes down to the cabin, wheels, controls and actual price—not an imagined efficiency advantage.
This Canadian specification guide was checked October 30, 2026. It compares conventional hybrids, not the plug-in versions, and uses the Canadian SX specification rather than a similarly named U.S. trim. It is not a back-to-back road test.
Equal combined ratings make fuel a weak tie-breaker
Tucson Hybrid is rated at 6.7/6.7/6.7 L/100 km city/highway/combined. Kia’s Sportage HEV brochure lists 6.7/6.6/6.7. Sources: NRCan’s 2026 Fuel Consumption Guide; Kia Canada’s 2026 Sportage HEV brochure.
At an illustrative 20,000 km per year using the combined rating, either calculates to 1,340 litres. The published highway difference is only 0.1 L/100 km. It is not a persuasive reason on its own to pay a substantial premium, and real consumption will depend on weather, route, loads and driving style.
If a dealer claims a meaningful fuel saving for one over the other, ask which exact configuration and calculation supports it. Keep purchase price, insurance, tires and financing in the ownership comparison rather than treating “hybrid” as a guaranteed lower total bill.
The seat material and wheel size are real distinctions
Kia’s Canadian brochure specifies 18-inch wheels for HEV SX and quilted synthetic-leather upholstery. Hyundai’s product card lists 19-inch wheels and leather seating for Ultimate Hybrid. Sources: Kia Canada wheels and interior specifications; Hyundai Canada Ultimate Hybrid specifications.
Those differences deserve inspection, not assumptions. Sit in both seats for a useful length of time and check support, surface feel and adjustment range. Neither material name proves greater durability or comfort.
Ask for replacement-tire quotes for the actual fitments and drive both over representative pavement. Wheel diameter alone cannot establish the better ride, but the exact tires and their replacement cost belong in your decision. Do not substitute U.S.-market SX wheel specifications for this Canadian vehicle.
Shared comfort and camera features
Ultimate Hybrid lists ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a panoramic sunroof, head-up display, Surround View Monitor, Blind View Monitor and Remote Smart Parking Assist. Its audio system is Bose. Source: Hyundai Canada trim progression.
Sportage HEV SX inherits air-cooled front seats, heated rear seats and a panoramic sunroof, and adds surround/blind-view monitors, remote parking assistance, a head-up display and Harman Kardon audio. Source: Kia Canada SX equipment table.
Because both cover these headline functions, try how they work. Compare camera clarity and selection, seat ventilation, the head-up display and everyday controls while parked. Confirm the operating limits and connected-service terms. An assistance feature remains a driver aid, not permission to stop observing the surroundings.
The powertrain numbers are too close to settle the purchase
Hyundai lists a 1.6-litre turbo hybrid with 231 horsepower and a six-speed automatic. Kia lists its 1.6-litre turbo hybrid at 232 combined horsepower, also with a six-speed. Both selected Canadian trims have AWD. Sources: Hyundai powertrain information; Kia mechanical specifications.
A one-horsepower published difference is not a useful acceleration verdict. Drive both in similar conditions and compare response, braking feel, shifting and noise. No measured performance winner is claimed.
Use your family and cargo as the final test
Bring child seats, regular passengers and the luggage or stroller you normally carry. Set the front seats first, then check rear access and cargo loading. Inspect the cargo-floor position and storage layout instead of comparing litre figures without understanding how they were measured.
Obtain itemized quotes for these exact trims with freight, fees, taxes and incentive eligibility shown. Compare total borrowing cost if financing and check delivery timing without assuming a brochure proves current inventory.
The verdict
Choose Tucson Ultimate Hybrid if its actual seats, interface and quoted equipment suit you better. Choose Sportage HEV SX if its synthetic upholstery, 18-inch setup and controls are the stronger fit. With equal combined consumption and overlapping comfort technology, the test drive and complete quote should carry more weight than a tiny specification difference.
Equal rated fuel consumption does not mean identical household costs. Use our vehicle ownership budget worksheet to enter the actual Tucson and Sportage quotes for insurance, tires and scheduled service alongside your fuel estimate.
