The 2024 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison is not simply a ZR2 with a different badge. Its appeal is the additional terrain-focused hardware, and the useful buying question is whether that equipment fits the way you plan to use a midsize pickup. It should also be compared with a regular ZR2 before deciding how much to spend.

Models available
Bison builds on the ZR2. Chevrolet’s specification sheet distinguishes its 35-inch tires and 12.2-inch ground clearance from the regular ZR2’s 33-inch tires and 10.7-inch clearance. Chevrolet Canada’s 2024 ZR2/Bison specifications.
Engine and transmission
The published specification is a 2.7-litre turbocharged four-cylinder producing 310 hp and 430 lb-ft, with an eight-speed automatic, four-wheel drive and a two-speed transfer case. Bison is not a V8 conversion. Canadian model announcement.
What Bison adds
The Bison combines Multimatic DSSV dampers with front and rear Jounce Control Dampers, locking front and rear differentials, AEV bumpers, underbody protection and rocker protection. Its front bumper is winch-capable; that does not mean a winch is installed. Bison equipment.
Before buying a used example, inspect the underside and tires rather than judging its history from the appearance of the bodywork. Ask about modifications, alignment and replacement parts. A factory terrain package and aftermarket changes are not interchangeable when comparing two listings.
Towing and payload
Chevrolet lists a maximum 5,500-pound trailer rating for Bison, subject to equipment and loading. This is not the maximum advertised for every Colorado. Use the actual vehicle’s labels and trailering instructions to establish its payload and towing limits. Trailering qualifications.
Include passengers, cargo, accessories and trailer tongue weight in the load calculation. A pickup can reach a payload limit before a trailer reaches the headline tow figure. The right configuration depends on what travels in the truck at the same time as the trailer.
Fuel economy
NRCan gives the 2024 Colorado ZR2 Bison 4WD 2.7-litre automatic a separate rating from the regular ZR2. These are Canadian laboratory reference figures, not results from our video. NRCan model-year data.
| 2024 configuration | City L/100 km | Highway | Combined |
|---|---|---|---|
| ZR2 Bison 4WD | 14.8 | 15.1 | 14.9 |
| ZR2 4WD | 14.1 | 13.8 | 14.0 |
At an illustrative 20,000 km a year, those combined ratings represent 2,980 litres for Bison and 2,800 for ZR2—a difference of 180 litres. Winter use, idling, loading and driving conditions can change the result. This calculation is not a fuel-cost quote.
Interior and technology
The Canadian ZR2 catalog lists an 11-inch driver display and an 11.3-inch infotainment screen with wireless phone compatibility. Bose audio, a heated steering wheel and ventilated front seats appear as optional equipment. Verify the build instead of assuming Bison includes every comfort upgrade. ZR2 Canadian catalog.
Canadian trim comparison
Historical Canadian catalogue reference checked October 29, 2026. The Car Guide lists the following 2024 MSRP amounts in Canadian dollars, before separately listed fees, taxes and additional options. The original price-effective date is not stated. These are historical catalogue figures, not current offers, launch-price claims or the window-sticker price of the filmed vehicle.
| 2024 Canadian configuration | Historical listed MSRP (CAD) | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| ZR2 Crew Cab 4WD | $57,699 | DSSV suspension and 33-inch tires form the starting point. |
| ZR2 Bison Crew Cab 4WD | $71,884 | 35-inch tires, additional jounce damping and AEV protection; $14,185 above the listed ZR2 configuration. |
Price references: 2024 ZR2 and 2024 ZR2 Bison. Both catalogue configurations use the 2.7-litre turbo engine and four-wheel drive. The $14,185 difference compares these catalogue configurations; it is not asserted to be the standalone Bison option surcharge. Equipment bundles and price revisions can make that different. Chevrolet’s Canadian launch material establishes the equipment distinctions. For a specific truck, request its original window sticker and separate additional options from the factory Bison equipment.
Is Bison the right choice?
Bison is worth considering when you specifically want its additional factory terrain hardware. If you mainly need a midsize pickup for ordinary hauling, compare a regular ZR2 and less specialized configurations as well. There is no need to pay for equipment simply because it is the highest-profile version.
